Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Leak Describes Doom's Castle, Sentinels and a Deadline of Less Than 24 Hours
An insider's full description of what Marvel Studios was probably preparing for Hall H includes Magneto in an unidentified place and a bloody hand in a TVA hallway
A full description of new Avengers: Doomsday material surfaced from an industry insider on Twitter. It lays out Doom walking the halls of his castle, Reed warning that the heroes have less than 24 hours to stop the incursions, and the Avengers, X-Men and Reed facing Sentinels and Doom. When I wrote this, my read was that it was probably a description of what Marvel Studios planned to show attendees in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con that Saturday. Spoiler warning: if any of this would ruin your Doomsday experience, stop reading here.
Marvel Studios was never going to arrive at Hall H without something exclusive from Doomsday
When Marvel Studios released the Avengers: Doomsday trailer to coincide with ticket sales that Monday, a lot of people rightly guessed that San Diego Comic-Con attendees must be getting something else. The day before this description appeared, rumours started to pop up about Marvel showing new exclusive material or a new scene, and I covered those in full at the time. Then, within roughly eight hours of my writing, the insider shared a complete description of new Doomsday scenes, which he was probably guessing would be what Marvel showed on Saturday.
The insider is rather new to the scoop game, active for roughly the last year compared to some names that have been around much longer. Even so, some of his scoops have already been proven true in a short amount of time. No scooper gets everything right, though, so take it as you will. I was going off this as probably the next Avengers: Doomsday trailer.
I also knew, point blank, that Marvel Studios was not going to show up at Hall H that Saturday without something exclusive from Avengers: Doomsday for attendees, because that is what they always do. Kevin Feige had just given a quote along the lines of "Hey, we know what Hall H is," signalling that Marvel was coming with surprises and some really cool material. So I assumed there would be something shown.
The described trailer opens on Doom's throne and a painting of a woman and a child
According to the insider's description, the trailer begins with Doom sitting on his throne looking straight ahead, probably in Latveria. The castle is shown from the inside, highlighting several environments in detail. Doom walks through the corridors until he reaches a huge painting of a woman and a child, just like the poster, while a voice in the background says, "My family was killed because of you."
It then reportedly cuts to the Fantastic Four ship arriving on Earth. Thor flies to the ship, followed by the same scene of Steve picking up Mjolnir. Thor, the Fantastic Four and Steve arrive at Avengers Tower, shown from a new angle. Steve greets Sam and Bucky, Reed says they have less than 24 hours to stop the incursions, and Steve talks to Yelena. Two ships depart with two different groups, with some heroes inside one of them and Doom visible behind them.
From there the description runs through a rapid series of scenes: scenes in Talokan, Yelena fighting another Mystique Yelena, Nightcrawler versus Reed, Shang-Chi versus Gambit, Cyclops shooting at Sam, and Beast and Reed talking. Magneto appears in his suit in a place the insider says he cannot identify. Then there is a scene at the Baxter Building, where the X-Men are present and Gambit looks at Mjolnir on the table.
The final run reportedly includes Reed and Doom talking, Loki appearing at Steve's house, a bloody hand in a TVA hallway, and the same Doom versus Thor scene. It ends with the Avengers, X-Men and Reed facing Sentinels and Doom, described as the same scene that leaked previously but much more complete and visually better. The Avengers: Doomsday logo appears, Doom stares at Steve in the last shot, the screen goes black and Doom's voice says, "You will forgive me one day."
The earlier Sentinels leak looks more likely to be trailer material than a leaked part of the film
I think it makes a lot of sense that the scene previously circulating on social media was early trailer material rather than an actual leaked part of the movie. Yes, those rumours were out there, but that is a lot more unlikely than trailers getting ripped early, because we know this material goes to a lot of different places to get dubbed and edited.
Studios send material out for final VFX, for editing and for trailers. They actually source trailers out to multiple houses, and those trailer houses bid on who gets the actual edit. That means trailer houses, VFX houses and editing groups receive some of this material without winning the bid, which creates so many points where it can leak. It just made sense to me that this explains what surfaced over the two weeks before, and that Marvel would put a scene like that in the trailer, because if that doesn't get you hyped, I don't know what does.
This sounded even more hyped than the trailer we had just received, if that's even possible, and I think it sets up a lot of the wonderment still left in this film.
Most people heading to Doomsday will not feel caught up, and huge parts of the film remain unseen
As I often say, there are a lot of people in the Marvel fandom who haven't seen a multiverse movie in quite some time. Maybe they saw Spider-Man: No Way Home. Maybe they saw Deadpool and Wolverine. Or maybe they skipped both, didn't even see the Fantastic Four, haven't seen a Marvel movie in a couple of years, and simply think there's a new Avengers movie out, they know some of these characters, so they should go see it.
I bring that up to compare the majority of people who will be sitting in theaters with those who follow coverage like mine, who feel completely caught up and feel that a lot of this movie has been disseminated. Based on this description, we were still missing huge parts of the film, and there was still so much more to come.
Reed's deadline of less than 24 hours points to a condensed timetable
Of the newest details, I think the big one to focus on is Reed saying they have less than 24 hours. That basically sets up a really condensed timetable for the whole film. You could see the whole movie taking place over the course of a day, and that usually works in TV and film to create a heightened sense of urgency, because what's coming is right around the corner.
The description also teases a lot of other matchups, and I couldn't wait to see some of them.
Magneto in an unidentified place hints at universes beyond the three named ones
The detail that stuck out to me most was Magneto appearing in his suit in a place no one can identify. We know the film goes to other pocket dimensions. The official synopsis names three big universes, the 10,005, the 616 and the 828, but we are going to go to some other universes too.
Again, this speaks to the wonderment of the film. The message feels like: you may have seen some of the plot leaks or major plot points, but there is still a ton of material shot that you have no idea about.
A bloody hand in a TVA hallway does not bode well for the TVA or Loki
The next huge detail is a bloody hand in a TVA hallway. Remember, this may be a trailer description, which means these are scenes Marvel Studios intends for us to see and draw our own inferences from, knowing there will be people like me who break down every single frame.
A bloody hand in a TVA hallway, I do not think, speaks well for the fate of the TVA or the fate of Loki, and that lines up with some of the leaks we had already heard about the film.
Naysayers will not rain on my parade for Avengers: Doomsday
I feel the Marvel fandom is in a very different place now than it was going into Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, which was probably an unprecedented moment for a studio that many movies deep into a franchise. Back then Marvel Studios could do no wrong and had everybody's favour. Throughout the Multiverse Saga, though, the discourse has shifted, and there are commentators with even bigger audiences than mine who really don't like Marvel at all.
I think all voices are welcome. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and to consume art and media any way they want; it is all part of the giant discourse around a fandom. But nothing is going to rain on my parade for Avengers: Doomsday. There are so many naysayers pointing out the overall low power level of the heroes, CGI they don't think looks good, or the fact that Robert Downey Jr. is playing Doctor Doom. Whatever point of entry they can find to complain, it's a lot.
That last trailer had me more hyped than ever. It feels like Christmas all over again, and the film was technically due very close to Christmas. Anyone who follows my work knows I'm not an overall complainer and I feel free to call things out when I see them, but in that moment I felt just as excited to be a Marvel fan as I ever have. I'm not sitting here wondering whether they will stub their toe or fail.
I remember the days when things weren't this analyzed, this loud, with opinions everywhere. Maybe we are never going back, and I'm yearning for something nostalgic that isn't possible. Marvel Studios can never be new and fresh again, because every next Avengers movie is compared to the ones before it. That is just the nature of the internet and fandom. All I'm saying is: if you can, try to rekindle that enthusiasm, or if you have it, keep it, because I expected a lot of negative discourse over the following six months.
At the time, Spider-Man was arriving the following week, Comic-Con was that Saturday, Doomsday was due at the end of the year, and Avengers: Secret Wars was set for the year after. I did not think the new trailer would go online right after San Diego Comic-Con, since we had just received the first one, but I expected that once the floodgates opened a couple of months later, it would be all Doomsday all the time.
How does this trailer description sound to you, and do you think it holds up as the next Doomsday trailer?
