Lanterns Episode 7: Why Sinestro Is Stranded on That Dead Planet, and Why He Needs a Ship
The man who always seems three steps ahead is suddenly asking John Stewart and Hal Jordan for a way out, and that says a lot about what he may have found.
Episode 7 of Lanterns left me with one big question: why is Sinestro on a dead planet, and what exactly is he doing there? My theory is that he may have found something tied to fear on that world, but the fact that he is demanding a way off it suggests he does not yet have everything he needs to use it.
Sinestro usually comes across as a man who knows everything. He is the master of the game. He understands the Lanterns and the Guardians, he even understands Hal Jordan, and somehow he always seems three steps ahead of everyone. So it surprised me to see him on a dead planet not simply giving orders but needing a ship.
Sinestro's escape leads to a dead world, and he may not be in control there
Guy Gardner revealed how Sinestro escaped from prison, but we did not know where he went. In episode 7, Hal and his fellow Lantern are on a dead planet when someone suddenly appears and threatens them over transport. We then learn it is Sinestro who is behind that demand.
That scene made me think Sinestro may not be in control of the situation the way we assumed. In his cell he seemed calm, like someone who knew everything and had every answer. But what if there is a reason he is on this planet, and that reason is connected to something much bigger than we imagine? Could he have discovered something there that eventually leads him to become the Yellow Lantern he really wants to be?
To be clear, I am not saying Sinestro has found a yellow ring hidden somewhere. All I am asking is: what if this planet is the start of his journey? Episode 7 clearly handed us a lot of puzzle pieces to put together.
Sinestro knew about the portal, so why does he need John and Hal?
Looking at Sinestro now, he does not seem like a man who controls everything. Something exposed him the moment he appeared, and he does not look as comfortable as he did in the prison cells. When he describes the place as a forgotten dead world, to me that literally means he is tired and wants out. With Sinestro, anything is possible, so maybe that is just an act, or maybe what is happening is part of his plan.
It is not surprising that Sinestro knew John would arrive on that planet, or that he knew about the portal. But that is not enough to draw a conclusion. If he really wanted to be there and things were going his way, why would he immediately need John and Hal to tell him where the portal is? His need for a way to escape points to something deeper. Maybe Sinestro has discovered something important but does not yet have everything he needs to use it.
John Stewart has already lived this planet's tragedy
Whenever you hear Sinestro's name, you cannot help thinking of his history with fear. So what if he found something connected to fear? Or maybe he was studying the planet and trying to understand what happened there.
This is not just any dead planet. John Stewart has already experienced it. The visitor from that world who came searching for someone gave John an injection, and through that encounter John witnessed the destruction of that world. So this planet was never just something John heard about. He lived it, felt it and saw it.
Now John is standing in the reality of what he once saw in his mind. Imagine picturing something in your head and then waking up one day to find yourself physically standing in the place where it happened. Experiencing that is completely different, because this time you have proof of what you saw. The destroyed city, the remains of the people, all of it is now right in front of him.
John sees suffering where Sinestro may see power
Comparing Hal and John on this planet, I think John knows something that even Hal does not understand in this version, because John lived the people's suffering. There is a big difference between their perspectives and Sinestro's. I think John sees the suffering of the people, while Sinestro sees an opportunity, in the sense that he may believe what happened on that planet represents power. One sees power, the other sees suffering, on the same planet where fear seems to dominate.
Looking at the planet, you can tell fear is everywhere. The destruction happened, but its effects did not disappear once the people suffered and died. I think John is affected by this because he suffered those effects too. If that is the case, it matters a great deal, because what if this planet is not just a place where something terrible happened, but a remnant of that tragedy? That would explain why Sinestro is there. Maybe he was studying it.
Looking at the Manhunters, we can say there is technology connected to fear and destruction. And with Sinestro, a character whose future in the comics is closely tied to fear, wandering around this planet, something deeper is surely going on. I do not think it is a coincidence. As far as I know, "we are in the world of the Lanterns, and we don't believe in coincidences."
Fear on this planet does not automatically mean a yellow ring
We have talked about fear being present, but that does not necessarily mean it is connected to the Yellow Lantern. Let's not imagine yellow rings everywhere. Something causing fear does not have to be the source of Yellow Lantern power.
The show has revealed that the planet can affect people's minds, as we saw with John. The comics established a mythology around fear as a power, but I do not think we know the relationship between the two yet. Maybe there is technology involved, some kind of experiment, or something the Manhunters left behind. So with Sinestro there, maybe he is trying to understand it all.
Sinestro's ship problem suggests his yellow ring is not at full power
Now for a very important point: why does Sinestro need a ship? If he had already figured things out, he would not be asking for transport. He could simply leave without needing John and Hal. His yellow ring does not seem to be working at full power. Maybe the power he discovered is hard to control.
I think that is a good thing, because it will keep Sinestro searching and exploring. He is a smart man who understands Lantern technology and knows the Guardians and how they operate. He also knows how dangerous power can be. But a person can have knowledge without having all the tools they need. I have found myself in situations where I knew what I wanted and still did not know how I would get it. That is where Sinestro is right now.
The irony is that as a former Green Lantern he never needed transport. He could fly. Now he is making threats to get it.
From Green Lantern to Qward: Sinestro's past and what he might do with fear
Sinestro was a Green Lantern, and he is also linked to the Sinestro Corps and yellow power. His relationship with the Guardians eventually collapsed, he became an enemy, and through the weapons makers of Qward he finally gained access to yellow power. Looking at the place where he is now stranded, which seems connected to fear and destruction, you cannot help thinking about that past.
I am not saying this planet is Qward. It is not. It might be a place where Sinestro finds an alternative source of power and learns something that leads him to his yellow ring.
Let's suppose for argument's sake that he gets this yellow power. What would he do with it? I see Sinestro as a dangerous man. He has always believed that fear and control can create order. He does not see himself as a villain. Deep down, he thinks he knows what is necessary and what people need, and what if people were too afraid to disobey him? Imagine Sinestro standing on this dead planet, looking at all that destruction, and reaching the wrong conclusion. Thinking from his perspective, I am quite sure he would tell himself that fear destroyed the planet's people because the wrong person was in control of it. He could easily convince himself that the problem was never fear, and that maybe it was that he was not the one controlling it.
John's fear, his father, and the Hal hologram that saved him
I do not think John can look at this planet the way Sinestro does. He is emotionally connected to it, so for him it will not be just a scientific experiment. Each of them has his own relationship with this place.
Beyond what he saw of that world, John has been through a personal test as well. We all saw how he spent his life being told not to be afraid, to be strong, never to show weakness or fail, and to keep going. In this moment he was tested, and I think he did not expect it. What happens when fear becomes something you cannot overcome with strength? We saw him hallucinate and face his father from his childhood. In that moment, it felt as if everything he had learned and been through collapsed on him. He seemed to forget that fear is part of human nature, and that courage is not the absence of fear. Hal understood this well and helped John get past it.
Meeting someone who weaponises fear is dangerous, because if Sinestro sees and understands John's fears, he could use them against him. The beauty in all this is that Hal's hologram did the exact opposite. Hal saw John and his suffering. This time he did not doubt him or say all those hurtful words. He stepped in and saved him, which I consider the huge difference between teaching someone and breaking them. It was truly wonderful to see someone who had always challenged John witness his suffering and choose to help. John has now experienced a different kind of teacher, and whatever lesson Sinestro tries to give him in the next episode will be interesting. How will he do it, and will he finally succeed?
Hal Jordan freed Sinestro and left him there, but was it to stop him or work with him?
What Hal Jordan knows and does not know is still a mystery. You cannot put Hal in a single box. He seems to fill in a lot of the gaps in this puzzle, which made me wonder whether Hal discovered this planet. Episode 7 already gave us the answer: Hal is the one who freed Sinestro and dropped him on this planet. So the real question is why. Was Hal investigating the planet?
The portal creates an interesting link. Hal clearly prepared for this journey and left supplies for travelling there. I think there are many possibilities about who was trying to stop whom, or perhaps the two were working together. Looking at it as a conspiracy, what if Hal and Sinestro were planning something, maybe an investigation? They share a history, so it would not be hard for them to work together.
Could Hal have found this planet, seen the destruction, discovered the fear, and then Sinestro stepped in to exploit it, so Hal decided to stop him and lock him there? Or maybe Sinestro turned on him? I am raising these questions because of the portal, which invites this kind of thinking. I think Sinestro knew about the portal because Hal met him there on that planet.
Parallax hints at a Yellow Lantern in the making, with no proof yet
Let's not leave Parallax out of this. The comics show Parallax is connected to fear and yellow power. So when we see people suffering terrifying hallucinations, an entire planet destroyed, and Sinestro on that very planet, it is possible that a Yellow Lantern is in the making. We have no evidence to prove that, though. It could be anything, or something different.
Sinestro may try to recruit John Stewart rather than fight him
Sinestro already knows John. Now that he has met him, just like Hal, is he trying to recruit John? Is it possible that Sinestro does not want to fight, but wants to recruit John, knowing full well how he has been treated?
I may not like Sinestro, but I think some of what he tells John might be true and could help him. Even so, it would be pure manipulation. He might tell John that fear is not something to run from, and given what John has been through, John might agree with everything Sinestro says. We all know John Stewart is smart, but he needs to be careful, because being right about a problem does not make a solution the best one.
Maybe the Guardians let him down, and so did Hal. Maybe his training was unfair and he felt like just a project. But that does not mean the man he just met gets to decide his fate, because Sinestro's solutions could be worse, and they would be another form of control. I think John has had enough of control, and it is time for him to make his own decision and walk his own path.
The dead planet may be John's story, not Sinestro's
From my point of view, this planet may be connected to fear that has become a powerful source, and Sinestro may have discovered something there. But given how much he wants the ship, it may be something different, and he needs an exit or a portal to pull himself together. John, meanwhile, stands in the middle of all this with his own fears and experiences, and now Sinestro in front of him. I wonder what price John will pay if he lets Sinestro manipulate him.
This may not be about Sinestro finding any yellow lantern at all, but about John Stewart finally discovering what kind of Green Lantern he wants to be, which I think would make the story very interesting. Hal may be caught up in that discovery too, and may try to help John get through it.
Based on what we know from the comics, I cannot help thinking Sinestro was trying to become a Yellow Lantern. If so, that dead planet may not be the end of the mystery but its real beginning. I also feel John is about to discover something that will change the course of events, and I am eager to find out what Hal Jordan is hiding. The next episode will be even more exciting. "If I had to bet on one thing, it would be John." Sinestro wants something from that planet, but John is the one who will change.
Do you think John can finally choose who he wants to become without letting another mentor choose for him?
