Dragon Ball Super Chapter 86 Leaks: Granola Returns, Goku Throws Gas Into Space and the Fight Appears to End

An unusually early full summary of chapter 86 had Granola, Vegeta and Monaito joining the fight against Gas before Goku's giant projection hurled him off the planet

The full spoiler summary for Dragon Ball Super manga chapter 86 surfaced remarkably early, and it laid out a chapter in which Granola returns, Goku throws Gas off the planet with a giant projection of himself, and Gas appears to finally be defeated. At the time I wrote this, the chapter was not due out until the 20th, five days later, yet the complete summary and several images were already circulating.

I have been covering the Dragon Ball Super manga since the very first issue back in 2015, and I cannot remember ever getting this much information this early. The images did not come from me. They came from two leakers, and the credit goes to them. I have no idea how they got them. After chapter 85, I was waiting for something to happen, and based on the images sent to me, "a lot and I mean a lot happens in chapter 86." Later in this piece I get to the panel where Goku is knocked out and then wakes up in what appears to be Ultra Instinct.

Gas Overpowers Goku Even When He Teleports

The chapter opens with a part titled full power battle. Gas uses a kind of telekinesis to strangle Goku and tries to break his neck, which we had already seen in the draft pages that came out a couple of days earlier. Goku frees himself by teleporting behind Gas and tries to hit him, but Gas punches Goku instead. So even with Goku teleporting, Gas still has a clear power advantage.

Gas tells Goku that every cell in his body is burning like fuel and that he has never felt anything like it before. He then creates a whirlwind that traps Goku and fires several ki beams that cut Goku's body. Goku is getting hurt badly here. Elec is happy to see his brother fighting like this, but Maki says she does not know whether it is right for Gas to win that way. That is interesting, because even one of the Heeters is questioning the ethics of this victory. I was not expecting Maki to be the one to say that.

Elec Is Manipulating Oil as Gas Starts to Age

Gas creates a big arm with his powers and hits Goku. Oil then remarks that it seems Gas has aged, and Elec tells him nothing is happening because Gas's power has not diminished. I don't know about that one. Elec is manipulating Oil big time there, because you and I both know what is really going on.

Goku clearly knows too. He tells Gas to be careful, because the balance between his power and his body has been broken. Gas then creates big legs with his powers and kicks Goku, so he is able to expand upon his body parts. Goku tries to attack, Gas forms two big arms and goes for him, and just before the two collide, a ki blast comes between them.

Granola Is Back, and His Blast Really Does Hit Goku

That blast belongs to Granola, and he has Monaito with him. Goatnola and Monaito, as I have seen people in the fandom call them, are back in the saddle again. I was hoping for Granola to get involved, because if these guys work together, Goku, Vegeta and Granola can beat Gas.

I have to own a mistake here. The summary said Granola's blast hits Goku, and at first I legitimately thought that was a typo by whoever wrote it up, since I could not see why Granola would hit Goku. I was wrong. He does hit Goku. Elec is surprised to see that Granola still hates the Saiyans and tells him that if he kills them, he will hire Granola again.

Granola tells Goku that he heard the voice of Bardock in a dream, and tells Goku what he is going to do. That detail is interesting. Granola begins charging a large ki ball in his hands, and Goku tells him he will buy time for Granola to prepare the attack.

Goku Shields Granola Until He Loses Consciousness

Goku stops Gas's giant fist and manages to kick him in the stomach, but Gas creates two giant feet and slams Goku into the ground. There is a lot of manipulation of size in this chapter. Gas then targets Granola and throws a ki ball at him, but Goku creates a barrier to protect him.

I like that they are working together. The son of Bardock, who once took care of Granola, now protecting Granola is kind of cool. That is "some good poetry there," and I can't say I hate the idea. Gas then launches several ki attacks at Goku until he loses consciousness. That was unexpected and strange to read, and my instincts told me something more was going on, which I come back to below.

Vegeta and Monaito Join the Fight Against Gas

Gas is exhausted but ready to kill Granola. Then Vegeta arrives and headbutts him, and tells Granola to hurry up and finish preparing the attack. So Vegeta does get involved and does help, which is good.

Oil and Maki go to help Gas, but Monaito appears between them and puts them to sleep with his hypnosis. So even Monaito gets involved in the fight again, which I did not think was going to happen. Granola finishes preparing his attack while Vegeta holds Gas so Granola does not fail, but Gas breaks free and goes for Granola.

Goku Wakes in What Appears to Be Ultra Instinct

Goku wakes up and creates a giant body, the same projection technique he used when he fought Moro. The images show Goku fighting Gas early in the chapter, then face to face later in the fight using the emotional variant of Ultra Instinct. As I understand it, Goku can use a version of UI Omen where he taps into his emotions but can still use some of the Ultra Instinct powers. I said at the time that I planned a full piece on how that works, because there is a lot of Buddhism and ancient martial arts in it.

Another image shows Gas's face with the giant fist and the blast coming from Granola, with both Goku and Gas reacting to it. The panel right before the giant projection shows Goku knocked out, then awakening in what appears to be Ultra Instinct. He has the dark hair, but he wakes up in Ultra Instinct. Granola's strategy could be to sort of force this power to come out of Goku. I am not really sure how it relates to Bardock, and that might be something we would only learn when the chapter dropped, or even the following month.

Goku Launches Gas Into Space and Granola Spares Him

The giant projected Goku scoops up Gas and throws him off the planet, launching him into space. I don't even know what to think about this yet. Granola tries to target Gas but cannot because his eyes are damaged. Monaito helps him, and he manages to shoot a large ki ball that hits Gas. Gas falls to the ground, and Oil and Maki go to his aid.

Granola does not kill him, because he does not want revenge on anyone anymore. I don't know about that. I get wanting to do the right thing, but these guys killed his mother. Maybe not Gas, since he has been manipulated, but at the very least he should take out Elec.

Granola tells Oil and Maki to take Gas home and never come back, which is very much a Goku type of thing. Goku did that to Captain Ginyu and to Frieza: go home, don't come back, behave and learn from your mistakes. But these are villains, and just as with the Moro arc, "not every villain can be reasoned with." Goku and Vegeta then reach Granola, who apologizes to them.

Gas Seems Defeated, but Elec Is Still Standing

The chapter ends with Gas on the ground, and it seems he has finally been defeated. That is not the end of the story, though. Elec is still alive and the Heeters are still there. According to the summary, Gas has been beaten, and I doubt we get any more forms from him.

My expectation was that the next chapter would see the story take a turn in a different direction, because Elec is still around. I still think Granola should consider getting revenge on at least Elec. He can spare the others if he really wants to. As I said above, Goku launches Gas into the sky, Granola fires his blast, and working together they beat him.

Is that truly the end of the fight with Gas, or does he have something left?
