Dragon Ball Super Beerus Opening Is Full of Easter Eggs From Past Eras
From a redrawn tour of Goku's history to a nod to a famous Akira Toriyama illustration, the new intro hints at what the recut is bringing
The Dragon Ball Super Beerus opening is chock-full of Easter eggs and references, and they don't stop at Dragon Ball Super, the story of Beerus and the first three arcs of the Super era. They reach back into past eras of the franchise too. With what's kind of a new Dragon Ball show on our hands, the intro is the thing that's definitely new, and it's what a lot of people are talking about.
I'm a huge fan of the editing here. "It's just it's beautiful editing." The animation team did a wonderful job, with Tadayoshi Yamamuro among those leading it. So let's break it all down, shot by shot.
The opening moves from the end of the Buu arc to a more serious Goku
First, we have Son Goku in the outfit he wore at the end of the Buu arc. That's what he had on before he finished off Majin Buu, and the opening uses it as the jumping off point, going from that moment into this new series.
Then Goku turns around, he's in his gi, and he looks serious. It looks like they might be focusing on a more serious Goku for this recut of Super, and I'm all for it. Goku has never been super serious if you go back and watch all of Dragon Ball. He's always been kind of a goof, and that's why we love him. But I think a lot of folks thought Super made him too goofy, so it looks like they might be going back on that.
Beerus breaks the universe to complete the Dragon Ball Super Beerus logo
The shots transition from Goku into space and go right into Beerus's planet, which is how we get to the logo. We have Dragon Ball, then Dragon Ball Super with the new 2026 logo, which is going to be applied to the upcoming Moro arc as well.
Then Beerus does his little finger thing where he breaks the universe, and that's how the Beerus part ends up getting added to the title. I think that's a very cool edit. Tremendous editing.
A redrawn Goku travels through the different eras of his history
This next shot is absolutely beautiful. We have Goku throughout the different eras, and all of this is redrawn and new. First it's Goku at the beginning of the series, then Goku from the Red Ribbon Army arc, or possibly the 21st Tournament. Then it's Goku punching through Demon King Piccolo, the moment he killed him, followed by Goku fighting Piccolo Jr. You can see the tail there from the previous Goku.
The Kamehameha from up high is not the Vegeta fight, it's the Piccolo fight. After that comes Goku from the Vegeta battle, and you can tell because he's wearing the Kaio outfit. He's doing the Kaio-Ken against Vegeta. Then we get Super Saiyan, with Super Saiyan 3 in the background.
This part is so well done. You actually see Goku go through the different Super Saiyan forms. He's one, then two, then three, and it's a beautiful transition.
Beerus sits at the center even beyond his own story
Then it cuts to Beerus looking as menacing as possible. He's going to be the focus of this series. Yes, he's only the antagonist of the first few episodes until we get to Resurrection F, but he's part of the story because Champa is his brother. That's going to be a link, and the reason they even have the Universe 6 and Universe 7 tournament is Beerus and Champa.
After Beerus, a section moves very quickly, so I went through it bit by bit. This appears to be Vegeta. I don't think it's Vegeta when he takes his own life against Buu, because he wasn't wearing the armor then. I think it's Vegeta on that hill. In Dragon Ball Z, he's frustrated after losing to 18 and screams on top of that little mountain, and they did the same thing in Super. That's what this is supposed to represent.
It then cuts to Goku in various battles and all of the characters from this era of Dragon Ball, all the way to Majin Buu on the left, who is one of the crew now. I guess you can still call them Z Fighters. I don't think that term is played out, even though we're past Z at this point.
Goku's Super Saiyan Blue mind training leaves me hoping for more
The next Goku shot is where we transition beyond Battle of Gods. This is Goku in his mind training to master Super Saiyan Blue. We saw some of that in the original Dragon Ball Super. Episodes 15 through 18 were in between the Resurrection F and Battle of Gods stories, and in those episodes we saw a little bit of Goku and Vegeta training with Whis and Beerus to unlock Super Saiyan Blue.
I'm hoping we see a little bit more in this version, but I don't know for sure if we will. Maybe it's something similar to what we saw in episode 1 with Goku's mind training. Maybe Goku and Vegeta both do mind training and we get a great new scene. I honestly hope we get something like that.
From there it goes into Resurrection F, with Gohan in his green tracksuit, even though green tracksuit Gohan doesn't really have a good track record, and Piccolo alongside him. Then we have Goku and Beerus.
Cabba, Botamo, Magetta and Hit represent Universe 6
Now we're into the Universe 6 material, and a lot of characters come in fast. Botamo is the one in yellow, Magetta is in the background, Jaco is on the lower right, and right in the middle is Cabba. Some people have said Cabba has main character energy. It all moves so quickly that you have to pause it to catch everyone.
Next is Goku and Vegeta training. Notice they're wearing their Resurrection F clothing, so that's good. Then the opening zooms in on Vegeta, and if you match it up with the lyrics, we're seeing a lot here. This part is Goku and Vegeta's evolution throughout the years, including the fusion of Goten and Trunks into Gotenks.
Then there's Goku versus Hit, like a preview of it, because that's what it looked like. This is where we finally see the real Hit. I thought that was him earlier, but it was Botamo.
Some fans read one shot as Goku and Vegeta unlocking god power
I've had some people hit me up about one shot, saying it's supposed to represent Goku and Vegeta unlocking the god power. Goku unlocks Super Saiyan God from the ritual, while Vegeta did it on his own through training with Whis, and Whis says this. So Vegeta, training under Whis, did it without the ritual, and that's what we're seeing there.
Speaking of which, there's Whis looking very pumped up. Frieza is of course making a comeback, since the Resurrection F arc comes next after the Battle of Gods part.
Then we have Team Universe 6 again: Hit on the left, Cabba in the middle powered up in Super Saiyan, and Frost on the right. Vegeta helps Cabba unlock Super Saiyan, which we saw in the original story, and we're going to see it here again. I hope they don't cut too much out of that, because it's one of the best episodes of that arc. That might be my favorite episode of the Universe 6 arc, Vegeta and Cabba and that whole back and forth.
There's also the Earth, which is funny because I think it's supposed to represent the Universe 6 Earth. I could be totally wrong on that, because we never actually saw the Universe 6 Earth.
Goku's jump from God to Blue outshines Chozetsu Dynamic
Then it blasts up and Goku goes Super Saiyan, and from there right into God. I know some folks are thinking this is Super Saiyan 3, but this is God. You literally see Goku radiating God ki, and it's so well done.
"So much better than Chozetsu Dynamic." That's not just about the song. Remember how plastic Chozetsu Dynamic looked? Meanwhile, this is smooth, one transition flowing into the other. It feels like a modern Dragon Ball anime, or a modern anime in general, with fluidity to it. And then he goes straight into Blue.
A final shot brings back a famous Akira Toriyama illustration
The closing stretch is a bunch of things that represent the series. There's a shot that's supposed to represent Goku and Frieza, and another of Vegeta and Goku. There's the Dragon Radar, and those are the Super Dragon Balls, which you can tell by their size. Beerus sits right in the middle of this whole conflict.
The big final shot is Goku in his base form, and that image is taken from a famous Akira Toriyama piece of art that was used ages ago. I'm so happy the team behind Super Beerus brought it back. It's glorious, and these are tremendous Easter eggs for what to expect from Dragon Ball Super Beerus over the next few months.
