Jiren vs Broly fan parody gets the memes and the characters right

A comedy fan animation pitting Jiren against Broly earns praise for its timing, sound effects and Dragon Ball humor

I loved the Broly versus Jiren Dragon Ball parody. It's a short comedy fan animation, and I hadn't seen it before I reacted to it. It's not stupid: "this guy gets the memes he gets the characters."

The reason I went looking for it was the news at the time that Jiren versus Broly was set to be a big part of Xenoverse 2's new Legendary DLC pack. I'd been making jokes on social media about how Xenoverse 2 is going to end up with about 250 DLCs, but that matchup really was coming to the game. The parody had come out earlier that year, and when you search for Broly versus Jiren, it's what comes up. A couple of years before, I think right after the movie came out or shortly after, I did a piece on what would happen if Broly fought Jiren. This one was just about reacting to the fan animation and giving my thoughts.

The Jiren gags start with a list of life goals

It opens with Jiren's goals in life, and the first one, be a generic character, gets scratched off. That one is going to burn some Jiren fans, because the big complaint among many Dragon Ball fans is that Jiren is a generic character with not much of a backstory. The list goes on: steal a girlfriend, kill my brother, and at the bottom, watch Vegito versus Kefla 2, which is probably another animation the same artist made. I may actually check that out. I love this kind of constant humor.

At one point I couldn't tell whether Jiren had fused with Broly. I didn't think he had. It looked to me like he just took his hair. There's also a pregnancy gag, and a sign I had to go back to read: "welcome to mexico the land of fugitive fathers."

Great animation skills and comedic timing

My first reaction at the end was to call it stupid, but it's not stupid. The animator has great animation skills, especially for comedy, great comedic timing, and the sound effects are great. I left a comment saying I loved it and calling it great work.

It's not supposed to be serious, since it's a parody, but this is my kind of sense of humor. This type of thing reminds me of the old Newgrounds days, and there's nothing wrong with making fun of what you love. I'm sure this animator is a Dragon Ball fan. You can tell because they've also made another animation, which I might check out too. I thought it was great, a lot of fun, and I like these short little animation quips a lot.

Which gag in the Broly versus Jiren parody landed best for you?
