Dragon Ball Heroes episode 9: Z Broly returns, but it feels flat
Limit Breaker Vegito and Demigra show up and Fu takes a new role, but the episode leaves my thumbs in the middle.
Dragon Ball Heroes Big Bang Mission episode 9 ends with two Vegitos on screen and a tease that Dragon Ball Z's Broly is coming back. Even so, the episode left me apathetic. It was okay, it was just there, and it didn't give me much story to hold onto.
A quick correction first. In my earlier take on this episode, I called Limit Breaker Vegito by the name Gogeta. I was exhausted and hadn't slept, and the name came out wrong. My advice is simple: don't put out anything public on no sleep. With that fixed, here's my proper review.
Fu becomes the new demon ruler after the Gods of Destruction stop the universe tree
The setup is that the Gods of Destruction managed to put a stop to the universe tree, and Fu is very angry about it. Mira and Towa then show up and perform a move that, as I read it, makes Fu remember his past or his true identity.
Fu becomes the new demon king, or demon ruler. He takes the place of the primary villain of many Dragon Ball Heroes arcs. Mira and Towa give Fu his new form, but I don't think we've seen them fight enough. In this episode they're mostly there to help Fu.
Vegito Blue then fights Fu. There are a few decent scenes and a couple of good cuts, but most of the animation is pretty wooden. Fu tries once again to re-energize the tree, and that's what brings in Limit Breaker Vegito.
Limit Breaker Vegito and Demigra arrive at the end of episode 9
By the end, we have Vegito Blue and Limit Breaker Vegito together, and Demigra appears alongside Limit Breaker Vegito. That means we may end up seeing a team up between Vegito Blue and the Super Saiyan 4 Limit Breaker Vegito.
Many people know Demigra from Xenoverse 2, and he was the main villain of Xenoverse. He was also put into Dragon Ball Heroes as one of the villains, mostly in the games and the manga. Much of the context for Heroes comes from the Japanese game. The manga isn't available publicly outside Japan, though the Switch game had some of the storylines.
That Vegito is described as coming from GT, but technically Super Saiyan 4 Vegito was never in GT. I guess you can call him a hypothetical fusion when it comes to GT.
Why this Dragon Ball Heroes episode left me apathetic
Every time I review a Heroes episode, I can't really praise it, because the story never gets enough time to be fleshed out. At the same time, some episodes are pretty terrible. It was just there. I didn't care that much.
Seeing Limit Breaker Vegito appear "doesn't really do it for me anymore." Characters showing up with no real story behind them doesn't do it for me. The plot here is mostly that the universe tree is busted, and Fu wants to make another one using his abilities. That's about it.
Dragon Ball Z Broly returns, and a Super Saiyan 4 Vegito fight looks likely
The big twist at the end is that they're bringing in Broly, and it's the Broly from Dragon Ball Z, not Dragon Ball Super. I think he'll be the villain for the next episode. The promo for that episode, which some call a rumor or a leak, discusses Limit Breaker Super Saiyan 4 Broly.
Z Broly has already had a GT form in Heroes, and the Limit Breaker version would be a Heroes exclusive. I guess they finally realized Broly is a money maker for them. Notice that the new Broly isn't there; it's only Z Broly.
So we're probably going to see Super Saiyan 4 Vegito against Broly. I remember when a cutscene came out many years ago of the Super Saiyan Gogeta from movie 12 fighting Broly, and people used it to scale Broly up to being as strong as Gogeta. I'm pretty sure Super Saiyan 4 Vegito and Super Saiyan 4 Broly will fight and it won't be a squash. That's weird to me, because we know how strong fusion is, but the games don't make that much sense.
The Big Bang Mission arc and why I can't get excited for Heroes
At the time of this episode, I had heard that the Big Bang Mission arc would be ending soon, and that we might get a new arc around March. That's going to be whatever. It's Heroes.
My verdict is thumbs in the middle. These episodes are just there, and after eight minutes with them you forget them. I'm not going to be fake about it: "I cannot get excited for Heroes." All we can hope for is some good animation and some good fights here and there. Nothing is going to be as interesting as it should be, because they don't have enough time to flesh things out.
