Was the Spirit Bomb Really the Only Way to Kill Kid Buu in Dragon Ball Z?
A look back at three moments in the Majin Buu saga where Goku's ultimate technique was not actually the only path to defeating Buu, and why it still worked best in the end.
One question I have seen pop up again and again is whether the spirit bomb, the Genki Dama, was truly the only way to finish off Kid Buu, or whether there was another route Goku and company could have taken. My answer is no. At least three other times in Dragon Ball Z, Majin Buu came very close to being completely destroyed using techniques that had nothing to do with the Genki Dama.
Why fans assume the Genki Dama was the only option for defeating Kid Buu
I think this idea mostly comes from fans interpreting the Genki Dama itself as a technique built from pure health energy, genki, and pairing that with the fact that Majin Buu was pure evil.
But that reading runs into a problem when you look at how the Genki Dama has actually been used elsewhere. We have seen it used on people like Vegeta and Frieza, not counting the Dragon Ball Z movies, and both of them survived it while being hurt. Both were victims of the attack, and both were pretty evil, especially Frieza, who I would call a league above Vegeta when it comes to being an evil sociopath. Yet he still survived it.
Majin Buu's stamina and magical regeneration made him uniquely hard to kill
The issue with defeating Majin Buu has always been his unbelievable stamina, perhaps more than any other villain even including the current Dragon Ball Super era. He can take punishment and keep coming, not just because of that stamina but because of a regeneration ability that is light years ahead of Piccolo's or Cell's. His regeneration is rooted in magic, and his body is structured in a way that lets him do things regular mortals cannot.
Majin Buu is a demon, which puts him in the god hierarchy even though he is not a god like Beerus or Whis. That status gives him access to moves beyond the understanding of mortal bodies, and his regeneration is one of them. A number of fans have theorized that Kid Buu specifically, as the purest evil version of Buu, was also the hardest to kill because using that regeneration was almost second nature to him, something involuntary rather than learned, like breathing or eating.
Gotenks nearly finished Majin Buu before the fusion ran out
The first near miss happened earlier in the Buu saga during the fight with Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks. At one point Gotenks disintegrated Majin Buu down to smoke, and Gotenks and Piccolo tried to snuff out what remained, yet Buu still regenerated. But that is not even the moment I am talking about.
Later, after taking a thrashing from Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks, Majin Buu was about to become the victim of a Kamehameha until Gotenks defused, which stopped Buu from being destroyed in that moment. The way it was drawn in the manga and presented in the anime makes me believe Akira Toriyama purposely teased that a powerful enough blast from Gotenks would have probably finished the job.
It is worth remembering that Goku, who taught Goten and Trunks the fusion pose from the Metamorans, thought Gotenks had the best chance of winning even before he saw the fusion happen, based on his deeper understanding of fusion. Then again, maybe he was overstating Gotenks' power or underestimating Buu's stamina, and when Goku first trained Goten and Trunks he was still picturing the fat Majin Buu, a weaker target than Super Buu. There was a filler anime episode where base form Gotenks fought Fat Buu and got thrashed, but their first meeting in the manga came in the Room of Spirit and Time, by which point Super Buu was already the version in play, so Goku could not have predicted that outcome. Buu appeared finished until, after Ultimate Gohan arrived even stronger than Gotenks, Buu pretended to blow himself up and disappear before catching them off guard and absorbing Gotenks to even the odds against Gohan.
Vegito disintegrated a piece of Majin Buu without even powering up
The second, more direct example came when Vegito fought Majin Buu after Buu had become Buuhan with access to a nearly unlimited level of power. Vegito, the strongest fusion at the time and the strongest character in the original Dragon Ball manga and in Dragon Ball Z before GT, Super, or anything since, embarrassed and humiliated Majin Buu throughout the fight, eventually goading him into absorbing him.
At one point in that fight, Vegito, without even powering up and without thinking twice, disintegrated a piece of Majin Buu's body right in front of him and taunted him with it, showing that he could have completely destroyed Buu at any point using a number of techniques, including basic ki, purely because of how strong Super Vegito was. That matters because Buu has magical regeneration abilities, and Vegito was able to destroy him at a subatomic level, which goes well beyond anything Gotenks managed. To me that is enough evidence that Majin Buu could have been killed without the Genki Dama, purely on the strength of that power difference.
Why Vegeta chose the Genki Dama anyway, and why it worked so well on Kid Buu
The Genki Dama was ultimately chosen because it was Vegeta's idea, at a point when Goku was almost out of power after pushing to Super Saiyan 3 and being unable to sustain the form as his body fell apart. Both fighters were in real danger, so Vegeta made the call. It worked because this was a super Genki Dama, even bigger than the ones used on Namek or Earth previously, the most potent version yet thanks to the genki contributed by the people of Earth and many others, giving Goku access to a huge amount of energy while he himself was physically exhausted.
As for why the spirit bomb worked better against pure evil Buu than it did against Frieza or Vegeta, I point to the god hierarchy. The Genki Dama is a technique Goku learned from King Kai, who is also a god, making it a godly technique in the same category as Hakai or Ultra Instinct. Majin Buu being a demon puts him on the other side of that coin, so it is easy to conclude that the spirit bomb's potent energy was the key to defeating him specifically. Buu was also composed of pure evil, whereas Frieza and Vegeta, despite being pretty evil themselves, were biologically different, which is why the Genki Dama had a far greater effect on Kid Buu. It is like using godly ki against another god, or godly ki against a demon: it is going to hit harder. Beyond that, I think Toriyama wrote it this way because it makes for a poetic ending to Dragon Ball, since for once it was the humans who helped save themselves.
