Why Kid Buu Never Actually Needed the Genki Dama to Die
Dragon Ball Z gave at least two other moments where Majin Buu came close to being destroyed without Goku's spirit bomb, and the reasoning explains why the Genki Dama still worked best in the end.
One question that keeps coming up is whether the Genki Dama, the spirit bomb Goku used to finish off Kid Buu, was really the only way to kill him. My answer is no. At least a couple of other times in Dragon Ball Z, Majin Buu came very close to being completely eradicated using techniques that had nothing to do with the Genki Dama.
I think this question mostly comes from fans reading the Genki Dama as pure health energy, genki, going up against a being who is pure evil. But that logic does not hold up once you look at how the Genki Dama has actually been used elsewhere. We have seen it used on Vegeta and on Frieza outside of the movies, and both of them survived it while being hurt, even though Frieza in particular was, as I put it, a league above Vegeta when it came to being evil. So being evil alone was not the deciding factor.
Majin Buu's Regeneration Is the Real Reason He Was So Hard to Kill
The issue with defeating Majin Buu has always been his stamina. Perhaps more than any other villain, then or even now in the Dragon Ball Super era, he can take punishment and keep coming, not just because of his stamina but because of his regeneration ability. That regeneration is light years ahead of Piccolo's or Cell's because it is rooted in magic and in how his body is structured, with a demonic magical quality to it that lets him do things regular mortals cannot.
Majin Buu is a demon, which puts him in the god hierarchy, even though he is not a god like Beerus or Whis. That status gives demons access to moves above what mortal bodies can manage, and his version of regeneration is one of them. A lot of fans have theorized that Kid Buu specifically, as the pure evil version, was also the hardest to kill because he used regeneration almost like second nature, something he never had to learn, the same way we breathe or eat almost involuntarily.
Gotenks Nearly Finished Super Buu Before the Fusion Ran Out
The first moment came earlier in the Buu saga during the fight with Gotenks. At one point Gotenks disintegrated Majin Buu down to nothing but smoke, and he and Piccolo tried to snuff out what remained, yet Buu still regenerated. But that is not even the moment I am pointing to. Later, after taking a thrashing from Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks, Majin Buu was about to be hit with a Kamehameha until Gotenks defused, which stopped him from being destroyed right there.
The way that scene was drawn in the manga and presented in the anime makes me believe Toriyama was deliberately teasing that Majin Buu was on the ropes, and that one more powerful blast from Gotenks would probably have finished him. Goku himself, who taught Goten and Trunks the fusion technique, thought from the start that Gotenks had the best chance of winning, before he had even seen the fusion in action, because of his deeper understanding of fusion. Then again, maybe he was overstating Gotenks' power or underestimating Buu's stamina, especially since Goku trained them against Fat Buu, and Super Buu was already stronger by the time the real fight happened.
Ultimate Gohan then arrived and was revealed to be even stronger than Gotenks, so had the fight continued, I think Gohan would have won. But Majin Buu, being clever, faked blowing himself up and disappeared long enough to catch them off guard and absorb Gotenks, evening the odds against Gohan.
Vegito Proved He Could Have Destroyed Buuhan at Will
The second, and much clearer, example came when Vegito fought Majin Buu after he had become Buuhan with a nearly unlimited level of power. Vegito, the strongest fusion at the time and the strongest character in the original manga and in Dragon Ball Z before GT, Super, or anything since, humiliated Majin Buu throughout the fight in order to goad him into absorbing him.
At one point in that fight Vegito, without even powering up or thinking twice, disintegrated a piece of Majin Buu's body right in front of him just to taunt him, showing that he could have destroyed him completely at any moment using a number of different techniques, including basic ki. That matters because Buu has magical regeneration abilities, and Vegito was still able to destroy him at a subatomic level, something well beyond what Gotenks could have done. To me, that is enough evidence that Majin Buu could have been killed without the Genki Dama in Dragon Ball Z, purely on the strength of that power gap.
So Why Did Goku Still Choose the Genki Dama Against Kid Buu
The Genki Dama was Vegeta's idea, chosen because Goku was almost out of power after pushing to Super Saiyan 3 and then being unable to keep using it once his body gave out. Both of them were in serious danger at that point. What made this particular Genki Dama so effective is that it was a super Genki Dama, bigger than the one used on Namek or on Earth before, the most potent version up to that point because it carried so much genki from the people of Earth and others. That high amount of energy was the best option for Goku while he was still physically exhausted.
The Real Reason the Spirit Bomb Hit Kid Buu Harder Than Frieza or Vegeta
The Genki Dama worked better against pure evil Buu than it did against Frieza or Vegeta because of the god hierarchy. Goku learned the technique from North Kaio, who is himself a god, which makes the Genki Dama a godly technique in the same category as Hakai or Ultra Instinct. Majin Buu being a demon puts him on the opposite side of that coin, so it makes sense that the spirit bomb's potent energy would be the key to defeating him specifically.
Buu was also composed of pure evil, while Frieza and Vegeta, despite being evil, were biologically different from him, which is why the Genki Dama had far more effect on Kid Buu than it did on either of them. As I see it, it is like using a godly technique against another god compared to using it against a demon, it is simply going to be more potent. On top of that, I think Toriyama wrote it this way because it makes for a poetic ending to Dragon Ball, since for once the humans helped save themselves.
