Ultra Instinct Goku vs Jiren and Moro: where does the chart fail?
An uncredited fan chart ranks each stage of Goku's Ultra Instinct in the manga. I agree with about 80 percent of it, but I think one Super Saiyan Blue claim doesn't hold up.
An uncredited chart maps the evolution of Goku's Ultra Instinct against the opponents he used it on in the Dragon Ball Super manga: Jiren and Moro. I agree with about 80 percent of it. The one big exception is its claim that Goku fused Super Saiyan Blue into Ultra Instinct against Moro, which I don't think the manga ever supports.
I'm unsure where the image came from. A friend sent it to me and says he found it on 4chan, but I don't know if it was first made there or somewhere else. Whoever created it, it's uncredited and I don't know who it belongs to. Broly isn't part of it, because Goku didn't use Ultra Instinct against Broly. Most of the chart covers the Goku vs. Jiren and Goku vs. Moro fights from the manga, and that's the version of events I'm working from here.
Master Roshi's dodging technique and base Jiren
The chart starts at the very top with a dodging technique. Its note says this is not Ultra Instinct, but it uses the same principle. That's a reference to Master Roshi's unique, early, unofficial version of the idea. It isn't Ultra Instinct, but as the chart's creator wrote, it does use the same principles, and here it's set against base Jiren.
Base Jiren can beat this technique, because Jiren is that powerful. Don't forget how strong Jiren is. The manga's events were very different from the anime's as far as the Tournament of Power goes, so comparing the two, Jiren wins. Still, I feel Roshi was able to dodge attacks here and there. To this day, we don't know how Roshi was able to figure that technique out.
Untrained Ultra Instinct Sign against Jiren's first two power ups
The next level is labeled sign of Ultra Instinct, not trained, with a note that it will turn off quickly. This is Ultra Instinct Omen, or Ultra Instinct Sign. The "not trained" part matters because this is the version Goku first tapped into before he was familiar with Ultra Instinct. This isn't Goku after training with Merus. This is Goku using Ultra Instinct Omen against Jiren.
According to the chart, Jiren's first power up can go toe to toe with untrained Sign of Ultra Instinct. The creator is differentiating the levels of Ultra Instinct: there's Omen from the Tournament of Power, and then Omen from the Moro arc, which is different because Goku trained. This matches up with the manga somewhat, because Goku in Ultra Instinct Omen was performing far better than he did in his previous forms.
Below that comes Jiren's second power up, where he gets serious with untrained Sign of Ultra Instinct. That was when Jiren got serious, began to eliminate people in the Tournament of Power, and showed how strong he was. Even then, he still wasn't at his max power.
Trained Ultra Instinct Sign against base Moro and powered up Moro
Right below that, the chart switches from Jiren to Moro, because it wants to compare the Omen form first before getting into the mastered, silver haired Ultra Instinct. Here the note reads that trained sign of Ultra Instinct can be maintained willingly, and that base Moro can't keep up with it. This is Goku after training with Merus in the room of spirit and time, in that alternate dimension Merus was able to create.
The chart says base Moro because this is Moro before he absorbed Seven-Three. And yes, this version of Moro can't keep up with this more powerful version of Ultra Instinct Omen. Don't forget this is also Goku with a stronger base form, because of the training he'd been doing with Vegeta at the very early onset of the arc.
Beneath that, powered up Ultra Instinct Omen faces powered up Moro, and the two go toe to toe. The powered up form is when we see Goku powering up, but the catch with it is that powering up affected the stamina and longevity of the form. That still doesn't make much sense to me. Based on the properties of Ultra Instinct, Goku shouldn't have to power up at all, because he should be in a totally different state of mind.
But remember, this is Ultra Instinct Omen, not the silver haired, perfected version. Because of that, Goku still has control over the form, since he can enter it at will, and control over what he does. He's still using his brain. It's not the real Ultra Instinct, where the entire body is loose; only part of it is. It's like half your brain is turned on and half is turned off. That's the best explanation I could come up with, and I'm not sure if the manga will offer a better one in later chapters. It's a weird concept, but I think it works.
Where I disagree: the Super Saiyan Blue Ultra Instinct claim
I don't know when the image was made, but I think it was probably made before Vegeta showed up, because Moro with Seven-Three reabsorbed isn't on it. There is one more look at Moro before the chart moves back to Jiren, though. It says Moro can confidently and easily defeat what it calls SSB powered trained sign of Ultra Instinct. What the creator is calling it is Super Saiyan Blue infused into Ultra Instinct.
This is where I completely change my mentality on the chart and disagree with it. So far I'd agreed with the image, but not this. At no point was it stated that this is Super Saiyan Blue. I don't recall it ever being stated in that manga chapter that Goku was using Super Saiyan Blue. He was powering up. Maybe it appeared like he had an aura similar to Blue, but I never saw that as anything different from the previous form.
So I think this is more of a theory at this point than information, which is fine, because we're all theorizing here. My view is that powered up, trained Ultra Instinct Omen against Moro is the same thing as before, with Goku continuously powering up. I don't think he went back to Super Saiyan Blue with Ultra Instinct Omen. It doesn't make sense to me that those transformations become one. I think that as he powered up, Goku may have put too much strain on himself, Moro was still hiding his power, and Moro was able to get the win.
Vegeta surpassed Ultra Instinct Omen Goku, not silver haired Goku
This is the point where Vegeta comes in, and Vegeta was able to surpass Ultra Instinct Omen Goku, but not perfected Ultra Instinct. There's plenty of misinformation about this, and people are confused. Vegeta has not surpassed silver haired Goku. He surpassed Ultra Instinct Omen Goku, yes, but not silver haired Goku.
It's also implied that the surpassing is not so much about power as about technical ability. Remember, it wasn't Vegeta's power that was hurting Moro. It was the spirit fission technique, his ability to separate the spirit out of Moro's body. As a tactical fighter, Vegeta certainly surpassed Goku during the fight with Moro, but we don't know for sure how much stronger he is than Omen.
He has not surpassed silver haired Ultra Instinct. That is not up for debate; that's just how it is. I know some Vegeta fans hype him up without thinking, but you have to view this objectively and not fanboy over Vegeta. He used that move to drain Moro's spirit, at which point Moro had to go and fuse with Seven-Three, and that's what led to the end of manga chapter 61.
Mastered Ultra Instinct against Jiren's third and fourth power ups
At the very bottom is just Ultra Instinct, the real one. You can call it mastered, perfected, silver, whatever; all those names apply, but the only official name is Ultra Instinct. On the other side is Jiren, who the chart's creator believes is stronger than Moro. He might be stronger than Moro, but is he stronger than Moro with Seven-Three? At the time, that was the one we didn't know about yet, and we wouldn't until the next chapter came out.
The chart says Jiren's third power up can go toe to toe with Ultra Instinct and can even turn it off with a strong enough punch. The same thing happened in the anime version. We saw Jiren go toe to toe with Ultra Instinct Goku, and Ultra Instinct Goku did better at one point, but Jiren hung in there for a while.
The last entry is trained Ultra Instinct against Jiren's fourth power up. Trained Ultra Instinct refers to Goku once he learns to use mastered Ultra Instinct at will, if he ever does, and I think the question the creator is posing is how strong Goku will be then. Jiren's fourth power up is Jiren after training following the Tournament of Power, during the events of Broly or the Moro arc, presumably for a possible rematch with Goku. How much more powerful will he be, if he's even training? We can assume he is, but we don't know for sure.
My verdict on the chart
The chart would have to be updated, because there was a great deal going on in the Moro arc that could change all of this, possibly even permanently, depending on where the story went. Still, it was fun to look at.
I agree with about 80 percent of it, with a couple of things to disagree with here and there, and it seems to be a pretty good look at the manga version of events. Remember that the anime was different. It had Jiren fighting much more, and he also seemed a bit more tired by the end, which is why Goku and Frieza were able to take him out at the very end. That's not how it went in the manga, and the manga is the version I'm looking at here.
What other creators are saying
More on Jiren →I think Jiren beats Broly because his showing against Mastered Ultra Instinct Goku surpasses Broly's performance against Gogeta, and his level headed fighting style beats Broly's rage. Still, I think with more time Broly could eventually rise to Jiren's level.
