Who Is Ghost? The Grim Origin of Call of Duty's Simon Riley, From Manchester to Task Force 141
From a childhood of torment to being buried alive by a cartel, the story behind the skull balaclava is one of survival, betrayal and vengeance
Ghost, the man behind the iconic skull patterned balaclava in Call of Duty, is Simon Riley, a boy from the gritty streets of Manchester, England, whose story is a tale of survival, betrayal and valor. If you think you know Ghost, think again, because his origin is full of twists, betrayal and secrets that even the most diehard fans might have missed.
Whether you have followed Call of Duty since what I think of as the golden era or you are new to the series, there is something in this story for everyone, and I am going to break down the details so that rookies and veterans alike can follow the intrigue of Ghost's tale.
The comics present a multidimensional view of Ghost beyond the games
I think it is important to note that beyond the games, Ghost's character has been explored in comics that delve deeper into his backstory, and that material is what I am unpicking for much of this piece. His lore presents a multidimensional view of the character. It has enriched his persona and made him a figure of intrigue and respect within the gaming community.
Ghost's impact extends through fan discussions, merchandise and his pivotal role in the narrative evolution of the Call of Duty franchise. But I will warn you now: this is not your typical fairy tale. In my words, "it's a tale of survival, betrayal and valor in the shadows of warfare." The man in the skull balaclava, dark red sunglasses and headset went on to become one of the most revered figures in Task Force 141, a cornerstone of the British Special Forces.
Simon Riley's Manchester childhood was quite literally a house of horrors
Simon's childhood was anything but ordinary. His father brought home dangerous animals to torment him, at one point forcing him to kiss a snake. His younger brother Tommy delighted in scaring him with a skull mask. His home was, as I put it, "quite literally a house of horrors for him."
Even family outings were traumatic. In what I see as a key moment in his childhood, Simon's father would take him to concerts, and at one of them he was forced to laugh at the death of a prostitute who had overdosed. Experiences like that numbed him to the harsh realities of life from a very young age.
Despite all of this, Simon was not broken. He spent his early adulthood working as an apprentice butcher, a job that taught him the handling of tools and precision, skills that would later define his military prowess. His decision to join the military was catalysed by the September 11 attacks, which propelled him into a world where he could make a real difference. Simon excelled in the rigorous training and was soon accepted into the Special Air Service, the SAS.
Ghost refused to return to the SAS until he had saved his brother Tommy
When Simon returned home on leave in January 2003, he discovered his family was in disarray. His brother Tommy had fallen into a deep drug addiction and was stealing from their mother to support his habit.
With a resolve as firm as steel, Simon chose not to return to his unit until he had set his family straight. He helped Tommy overcome the addiction, and by 2006 Tommy was clean, married and a father, having turned over a new leaf. Simon stood as best man at his wedding. But that peace was short lived.
A Day of the Dead betrayal left Simon Riley buried alive
Simon was next attached to an American team whose mission was to dismantle a Mexican drug cartel. During the operation, on the Day of the Dead, his commanding officer betrayed him. Simon was captured and taken to a brainwashing facility, where he and his teammates endured months of torture.
Unlike his comrades, Simon never fully broke. Out of frustration, the cartel's leader buried Simon alive in the commanding officer's casket. In a macabre twist of fate, Simon used a jawbone from that officer's corpse to break free, clawed his way back to the surface and made it across the border to Texas.
Vengeance in Mexico is what turned Simon Riley into Ghost
Four months later, healed physically but scarred, with issues managing his temper, Simon returned home to a nightmarish scene. His entire family had been murdered by one of his teammates, who had been brainwashed by the cartel leader.
In a cold fury, Simon tracked down and eliminated the former teammates who had become the drug lord's pawns. Fuelled by vengeance, he returned to Mexico and dismantled the cartel's empire piece by piece. After storming the drug lord's mansion and ending his reign, Simon was fully transformed into Ghost. He was then approached by General Shepherd and recruited into Task Force 141.
Task Force 141 made Ghost a legend, until Shepherd's betrayal
With Task Force 141, Ghost's legend began to grow. He faced terrorists, sharing his harrowing tale with hostages before their dramatic rescue. His reputation as a relentless warrior was solidified in an operation alongside John Price and Soap MacTavish, where they hunted Vladimir Makarov.
Despite their successes, tragedy struck when Shepherd betrayed the team. Ghost and his comrade Roach were fatally shot by Shepherd, who burned their bodies. It was a grim end to a saga that had inspired many, and, as I put it, "another betrayal that just we didn't see coming."
Why Ghost remains a cornerstone of Call of Duty lore
Recent reboots of the series had reintroduced Ghost with elements of his original backstory intact, blended with a new narrative that expands on his character. Each appearance, whether it echoes past games or opens new chapters, deepens his mystery and ensures his place as a cornerstone of Call of Duty lore.
In sum, I see Ghost not merely as a character but as a legend whose spirit pervades the heart of Call of Duty. He embodies the ethos of a warrior shaped by past scars, a phantom in the field known for his tactical genius and the depth of his loyalty. His story is a compelling narrative of overcoming unimaginable adversity, not just for vengeance but for redemption and honour, and he stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of characters who turn personal tragedy into strength.
He is not just a fixture in video games. He is celebrated across comics, in countless TikToks and on forums where fans dissect his every move, cosplay him and speculate, particularly about his next appearance. Whether through his grim origin story in the comics or his tactical silence in the games, Ghost's impact on the gaming community is indelible.
