Five Spider-Man: Far From Home Fan Theories I Think Hold Up, From Tony Stark's Hologram to MJ as Nick Fury's Daughter
Breaking down five fan theories about the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer, including why Tony Stark could still appear, why Mysterio is probably lying, and why MJ might secretly be Nick Fury's daughter.
The Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer brought a wealth of new possibilities into the MCU, and since its release fans have flooded the internet with theories about what could happen in the film. I want to break down five of the fan theories I have read and go through whether I think each one holds any weight.
This is full spoilers for Avengers: Endgame, so if you have not seen that film and do not want the big plot points spoiled, turn back now.
Tony Stark Could Return to Peter Parker Through a Hologram, Not Flesh and Blood
The first theory involves a character who was seemingly killed off in Endgame. While I do believe that Tony Stark is dead, that does not mean he will not be in the film in one form or another. In Endgame we saw Stark leave not one but two farewell messages to his friends and family, so it makes sense that he would also leave something behind for Peter Parker.
I do not think Stark will appear in the flesh, but I do think we will see a return of the character through the form of a hologram, which Peter discovers when putting on his glasses. In the trailer we see him taking the glasses off and seeming surprised at what he has just witnessed, which fits with Tony having left something special behind for him.
Even though Tony and Peter already got the chance to say goodbye to each other in Endgame, a hologram message would still be a nice Easter egg that shows Tony will always be with him in one form or another.
Mysterio Is Probably Lying About Coming From Another Dimension
The second theory centers on Mysterio, the newly introduced MCU character. While Mysterio claims to be from another dimension, I do not actually think that is true. Many fans online, myself included, believe the elementals in the film are actually illusions the character is using to present himself as a savior.
Giving himself a story about coming from another universe also helps him avoid suspicion about how he came to have his abilities, so most people will probably not look into it further. Saying he is from the multiverse is the perfect opportunity for the character to put himself at the forefront, and if he is lying about the elementals, it is a safe bet he is also lying about where he comes from.
That said, I do think the multiverse itself is still real within the MCU and will factor into the film. I think the two post-credit scenes will have some major moments pulling from that idea, which ties directly into the next theory.
Far From Home Might Set Up an X-Men and Fantastic Four Crossover Through the Multiverse
X-Men: Dark Phoenix was due to release in June and was said to be the conclusion of the X-Men Fox franchise. Since Disney now owns the studio, and therefore the X-Men characters, Far From Home is the perfect opportunity to bring the two universes together, especially now that the multiverse has been established.
I believe that during one of the film's post-credit scenes we will get a tie-in to the X-Men franchise, with some of those characters crossing over into the MCU. If not that, then I think it is definitely possible the Fantastic Four could appear instead, since they are long overdue in the MCU. The snap tearing through reality is the perfect opportunity to introduce already established characters, and I think Marvel will likely be bringing them into Far From Home as setup for Phase 4.
There have also been rumors about reshoots around Dark Phoenix, and I think the final act of that film could tease a tie-in to the MCU through use of the multiverse. Disney has a big opportunity to bring two massive franchises together, and the fact that they are introducing the multiverse confirms to me that they are planning a crossover of some kind.
The Black Suit Spider-Man in the Trailer Could Be a Multiverse Variant, Not Peter Parker
This theory suggests Spider-Man could be from the multiverse. I am not fully on board with it, but I think it could be an interesting way to introduce the Spider-Verse into the MCU. Into the Spider-Verse was obviously very successful, and Sony will be wanting to cash in on it as much as possible.
There is a chance the black suit Spider-Man we see in the trailer is not actually Peter Parker of Earth Prime, but instead a Spider-Man from an alternate timeline who is battling the elementals. Though there is not much evidence for this beyond guesswork, it would still be a neat way to showcase the rest of the multiverse and give an alternative version of Spider-Man in the process.
MJ Could Secretly Be Nick Fury's Daughter
This is probably the most widespread theory I have seen online regarding the film, and many people seem to believe it is true, myself included. There is character evidence for it: MJ is always spying and creeping up on people, and she literally goes into detention to profile and draw portraits of her classmates.
Outfit-wise, the two characters share similar tastes, with both wearing black for most of their appearances. MJ's hair covers her right eye a lot in Homecoming, similar to Nick Fury's eye patch, and despite being anti-authority she still ends up a leader by the end of that film.
Historically, parents have always played a big role in the Spider-Man universe. Over the decades we have seen Harry Osborn's father as the Green Goblin, Gwen Stacy's father as the chief of police, and Liz's father as the Vulture. This would open up an opportunity for Nick Fury to become the stern father figure, adding an extra layer to his relationship with Peter that would no doubt be funny in the film.
I can definitely see this being the case, and I really hope it makes it into the movie. It would also explain how MJ knows that Peter Parker is Spider-Man.
Which of these five theories do you think actually holds up?
