Kraven the Hunter Trailer Leak: Heavy Spoilers Breaks Down the R-Rating, Rhino's Serum Origin and Russell Crowe's Role

Descriptions from the CinemaCon first look point to a gory, globetrotting origin story with Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Kraven and a transforming Rhino villain

The first look at Kraven the Hunter was shown at CinemaCon, and there is a lot to unpack from the descriptions that came out of it. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays the infamous bounty hunter, and from the sound of it, this one might actually break the curse that has followed Spider-Man spin-off films so far.

From the event, it is confirmed that the film is R-rated and that the first look is packed with over the top action and gore. Aaron Taylor-Johnson takes center stage in it, and he has been building his name over the last couple of years to the point that he is apparently the front runner for James Bond. Trailer footage descriptions often get lost in translation, so some details here might be slightly altered, but from what I have been able to gather, this is basically what happens in the teaser.

Rhino Takes Center Stage Since Sony Is Not Using Spider-Man Again

Rhino makes a big appearance in the footage, and with Sony not putting Spider-Man in their villain spin-offs, he has instead been made the main focus. Kraven is a hunter, and the character made his name in the comics by tracking down Spider-Man and claiming him as a prize. In Kraven's Last Hunt, he actually managed to do this, burying Spider-Man alive, which led to Spider-Man having to crawl out of a grave in one of the best comic book covers ever. In the Ultimate Comics version, Kraven was a sort of Steve Irwin style reality TV star, except he hunted the animals rather than being kind to them, and he was trying to prove himself as the greatest hunter there ever was.

That drive has been a key component of the character whenever we've met him in the comics fully established, but this movie is set to act as an origin story. We will see not only his younger years but also his father, played by Russell Crowe.

The Trailer Opens With a Gory Poacher Scene and Russell Crowe's Narration

The footage apparently begins in the countryside, where a number of poachers are closing in on a location. Kraven pops up out of nowhere wielding his classic machete and cuts them up in what is described as an extremely gory scene, with the description simply saying lots of blood. That instantly signals what kind of movie this is going to be.

At this point Russell Crowe, as the father, gives narration setting up the general theme of the film, delivering lines about what he is and what his son will become, closing it out by saying that both he and his son are predators. Rhino is billed as the villain in the trailer, but it is possible Crowe's character could end up becoming the bigger threat, potentially putting his son through the paces to craft him into the world's greatest hunter, possibly even in league with Rhino somehow, though that will obviously play out in the film itself.

A Globetrotting Story With Brutal Kills, Including a Bitten Off Nose

From the countryside, the footage moves to a snowy action scene before shifting to a city, suggesting a globetrotting adventure with Kraven training his skills in both Arctic and urban settings while still being told he is just another man looking for a trophy, implying he has not yet made his name and is out there building his reputation.

The trailer is meant to be quite short, with a few more shots including Kraven sitting in an office chair before spearing someone who walks into the room, biting a guy's nose off, and someone getting stuck in a medieval trap that brutally kills them. I am a bit confused over the actual order of these moments, since some reports say the nose biting, with Kraven spitting it directly at the camera, is what opens the trailer alongside the poachers. I was not able to place exactly when that part happens. We are also meant to see his classic, comic-accurate vest, which Kraven pulls out of a chest at one point, potentially belonging to his father or possibly tied to a post credit scene, since Sony loves showing those in their trailers.

Kraven's Powers Reportedly Come From a Serum, Not the Amazing Spider-Man 2 Armor

The footage apparently ends with a tease of Rhino and a couple of action scenes that reveal how his powers work this time. In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Rhino had the iconic robot armor, but this film is taking a different approach. After Kraven encounters the character, he injects himself with a serum, and we get a shot of his arm morphing into a giant Rhino fist before the rest of his body transforms into a giant Rhino monster that Kraven then has to take down.

Kraven effectively facing a Rhino man also sets up the idea that he might one day hunt other animal-themed Spider-Man villains, and there are plenty of those to choose from, including Scorpion, Black Cat, Doctor Octopus and Vulture. If things go well, other villains like that could show up for Kraven to face off against down the line. The trailer ends with the tagline "nothing survives the hunt," which gives the sense that Kraven will somewhat lose himself in carrying out these deeds. I think Aaron Taylor-Johnson is a great get for this film, and it will be interesting to see how that theme plays out.

Why This R-Rating Could Matter for Sony's Spider-Man Universe

Sony has pulled in J.C. Chandor to direct, who was behind A Most Violent Year, and apparently made clear at the event that they are still planning to pull together all the Spider-Man spin-off characters, even though Morbius was somewhat of a disappointment. This looks like Sony finally embracing what it needs to do, and they did not even include Spider-Man Easter eggs in the trailer that would then need to be edited out of the actual film, which I am hoping shows real confidence in giving this one an R rating.

I also liked Venom 2, but it baffled me that they did a Carnage story that was PG-13 when the character is a serial killer with one of the most messed up backstories in comics, watered down to try to appeal to everyone. I think they should have leaned into that, and I am glad it at least sounds like Kraven is doing so. Deadpool and Logan already showed that R-rated comic book films can do well, and I am hoping that if this one succeeds it helps normalize that approach in the genre, especially with Deadpool 3 also confirmed as R-rated and, if that does well, hopefully opening the door for something like the MCU Blade movie to get that rating too.

Comic book movies are in a strange place right now, and disinterest in them has not felt this bad since the early 2000s. Shazam 2 bombed pretty hard, and Quantumania has not turned a profit as far as I know. There are just not enough movies breaking the mold at the moment, and pushing for R ratings or making something like a gritty crime noir Batman or Joker is what allows these films to actually stand out and show the genre growing with its audience. We are at a point now where the first MCU movie, released 15 years ago, actually seems more mature than a lot of what is coming out now, so I am hoping this helps win some goodwill for the Sony Universe, since outside of the Spider-Verse films, the last couple of movies in it have been a bit lackluster.

Madame Web footage was also apparently shown at the same event, but I am still getting clarification on what happened in that footage, so I will share more once I know for certain.

Does an R-rated, serum-powered Rhino origin make you more or less excited for Kraven the Hunter?
