Morbius Trailer Breakdown: Heavy Spoilers Digs Into Every Spider-Man Easter Egg, Theory and Leak

From Michael Keaton's Vulture cameo to a possible Black Cat tease, here is everything spotted across the Morbius trailers and vignettes.

Heavy Spoilers (AI-assisted)7 September 2026 · Editor: Digital Fox Talent Editorial Team 1,180 words · 5 min read

The Morbius trailers, vignettes and international cuts that have dropped over the last couple of days are packed with hints toward the wider Spider-Man universe, and I wanted to combine everything into one breakdown. There are nods to Black Cat, the Rhino and even Norman Osborn hiding in the background, plus some plot leaks that suggest exactly how Michael Morbius ends up on the run from the law.

Michael Keaton's Vulture Cameo Ties Morbius to His Arrest for Murder

The first trailer included a shot of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man with the word "murderer" spray painted over it, and it also featured a cameo from Michael Keaton reprising his role as Adrian Toomes. The new international trailer expands on this by showing Toomes introducing himself to Morbius while telling him that "the dark should keep in touch," which suggests Morbius's reputation is already known by this point in the story.

It could be that Toomes is being brought in by a police officer after Morbius is arrested for murder, which lines up with other shots in the trailers showing him in a prison jumpsuit. That detail also hints at the cost of his powers, namely his need for blood.

Is Morbius Living in the Venom Universe, or Somewhere New Entirely?

Venom: Let There Be Carnage ended with Eddie Brock being transported into the MCU, and though it is not confirmed which universe Morbius takes place in, the international trailer ends with Morbius jokingly saying "I'm Venom," which suggests he is likely in the same universe we have seen across the Venom films. Kevin Feige has said that the post credits scene of Let There Be Carnage was done at the last minute, and since Morbius was filmed long before that, the multiverse connections may not have been fully planned when it was shot.

Either way, Morbius does seem tied into a lot of things. My own theory is that this could even be its own universe with connections to others, and that Morbius might get pulled into the MCU the same way Venom was. This could be how Blade ends up getting his powers in the MCU, since in the comics Morbius bit the hero and that is what gave him his abilities. Loki also mentioned vampires out in the multiverse, which could tie into this reality. Splitting things this way would let characters like the Vulture pop up, let Morbius reference Venom, and still let the Daily Bugle exist as a print newspaper without breaking the wider MCU, where it runs more like an online news show than a print newspaper. It is even possible that Doctor Strange messed up the spell in No Way Home badly enough to crack the multiverse open in the first place.

The Daily Bugle Front Page Teases Rhino, Black Cat and a Vampire Style Killing

In the new teaser Morbius is shown looking over the front page of the Daily Bugle, and its logo and font match the Raimi era Venomverse version rather than the MCU version, which adds weight to the theory that this is its own reality. The headline reads that Morbius has been arrested for a vampire type murder, which explains the prison jumpsuit look and hints at the cost of his powers.

Beyond that headline there are smaller nods to other characters. One reads that a rhino is on the loose and that it is a zoo hoax, which could mean we actually see that Spider-Man villain, or it could just be a prank reference. Next to it reads "black cat friend of foe," giving the first hint toward Felicia Hardy, the jewel thief who has been both a love interest and antagonist to Spider-Man in the comics. I would love to see a solo movie built around her down the line.

Oscorp Tower to a Multiverse Version of Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin

The trailers also give glimpses of Oscorp Tower, which is owned by Norman Osborn, and pumpkin bombs have already turned up in the No Way Home trailer confirming that Willem Dafoe is reprising his role as the Green Goblin. It has been said that this will not be the exact Raimi version but rather a what if take from across the multiverse. It is possible this is the same reality as Morbius, and that this version of the Goblin could end up getting pulled across as well.

Michael Morbius's Nobel Prize, His Collapse and a Childhood in Greece

The trailers show Morbius winning a Nobel Prize for his work in blood research, but according to plot leaks, just after he collects the prize he collapses on stage, and that is what really drives him to search for a cure. In the comics his blood disease makes him look monstrous, but here it mainly seems to give him muscle weakness. The trailers also show him as a child attending a Greek school, which matches the comics, where Morbius originates from Greece.

Jared Harris's Mentor Character, the Chess Game and a Possible Villain Turn

At that school Morbius is mentored by Jared Harris's character, who has not been named in any cast list. It is possible he is Emil Nicos, a character pulled directly from the comics. I have a feeling Harris could end up being one of the villains, since the film seems to be keeping his name secret on purpose. Plot leaks from before the first trailer also described a flashback scene where Morbius and this mentor play a game of chess together before the mentor leaves, which could set up a rivalry between them. That said, the mentor does judge Morbius fairly harshly in the trailers, so he could just genuinely be a strict but well meaning figure rather than a villain.

Martine Bancroft, the Bat Cave Sacrifice and How Morbius Gets His Powers

With his fiancee Martine Bancroft, Morbius experiments on himself using vampire bats, which is what gives him his abilities in the comics as well. The movie does seem to be changing the details, since the trailers show a strange cave on a mysterious island that appears to require some kind of blood sacrifice to bring the bats out. Morbius brings the creatures forth by touching a machine at the location, and they swarm and kill everyone there except him. According to the leaks, he then sneaks aboard a ship to travel home, which is where the vampire style hunting sequence shown throughout the trailers takes place. From there it looks like he is captured and put in a lab while he works out both his new powers and how to control his thirst for blood.

The Cost of Morbius's Powers: Speed and Strength Weighed Against a Thirst for Blood

I think the way the powers are portrayed looks incredible, with Morbius able to teleport and move at great speed, appearing and disappearing at will. It is a cool way to stage action for a vampire character, and everything shown in the trailers and featurettes looks great. But that ability comes at a cost, since he has to drink blood to survive, and I am curious how the film balances a hero who wants to do good with someone who has to drain people of their life force to stay alive. I think that moral complexity is something the Sony characters have an edge on, since so many of them are villains in the comics, giving them room to explore morality in a way a lot of the Marvel heroes simply do not get.

Simon Stroud's Manhunt and the Mysterious Paper Bat Left at a Crime Scene

Morbius also has to evade the law in the form of Simon Stroud, played by Tyrese Gibson. In the new footage Stroud is shown holding up a paper bat left behind at a crime scene, but I do not think that clue actually comes from Morbius. My theory is that it is planted there by Matt Smith's character instead. In the comics, Stroud dealt with the supernatural and investigated J. Jonah Jameson's son after he became a werewolf, so I would love to see him play a vampire hunter here. The first trailer also shows him with what looks like a bionic arm, suggesting he may be upgrading himself over the course of the film to fight this new threat.

Matt Smith's Character and the Theory That He Becomes Hunger, Devourer of Realities

Matt Smith's character looks likely to be the overall villain. From the first looks it seems he is the one who tells Morbius about the mysterious island, and behind the scenes images show him acting as a guiding figure. According to plot leaks, he will have had a similar disease to Morbius before showing up completely cured, which is when he tells Morbius about the rare vampire bats. In the comics that character goes on to become a villain known as Hunger, devourer of realities, a parasitic organism that feeds on universes, and it is possible the film version could even destroy this reality and force Morbius into another one. I would love to see that play out on screen, and to me he makes more sense as the villain than the mentor character does, though that is just my own theory.

My Verdict After the Trailers: This Looks Like a Genuine Second Chance for Jared Leto

I will admit I was one of the people who thought this movie was going to be bad. Venom has always been a guilty pleasure of mine and Into the Spider-Verse was excellent, but I was very much in the mindset that Sony did not know what it was doing right now, a long way from the golden era of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films. Having seen these trailers, I am genuinely on board, and I think it looks like a fun movie that leans into what Sony can do best. They are clearly going to needle Kevin Feige by packing in as many Marvel easter eggs as they can to piggyback on the MCU's success, but I actually enjoy the direction Sony can take with these characters and the moral complexities they carry.

There have been a couple of screenings for the film, and from what I have been told behind the scenes, this is going to be a surprisingly good movie that sets Morbius up as one of the most unique heroes we have seen in a Marvel film, packed with action but also real character development. Jared Leto was let down by Suicide Squad, and this feels like it could be a genuine second chance at a comic book role for him. The trailers have done a great job of getting me hyped, and I love how they lean into the wider Marvel universe while teasing other films. I am hoping that rumored Black Cat movie gets announced at some point, since she would be another great character to explore, and after these trailers I am looking forward to seeing Morbius in January.

What do you think is really going on with Matt Smith's character, and could he turn out to be Hunger, devourer of realities?
