Agatha All Along Episodes 5 and 6: A Scare My Wife Didn't See Coming and Billy Maximoff's Vessel Twist
A possession scene rattled the person who called the show not scary, and the William Kaplan backstory finally explained how Wanda's son fits in
We missed a week of Agatha All Along, so for episodes 5 and 6 I sat down with my wife and took on both at once. She started off saying the show was not scary, but it ended up being too creepy for her to watch, and episode 6 finally explained how Billy Maximoff ended up in someone else's life.
The Salem Seven started out looking more like Halloween fun than horror
Early in episode 5, the Salem Seven didn't land as frightening for us. It was said that it would be fine for children to watch, more of a Halloween type of thing. The fake leaves and the forest made the whole thing look like a set, and that took me out of it a little. We also wondered how the coven just pulled those thick branches off the trees with no saw and no roots.
The ceiling possession scene was too much for my wife
Things changed with the Ouija board trial. Once the spirit appeared on the ceiling and the body started bending, my wife couldn't look. I reminded her she was the one who said the show wasn't scary. Afterward she was clear about where her line is: "I don't like Exorcist faces and possession." She also made it plain that The Conjuring is not happening.
The Billy Maximoff vessel explanation worked for me
I think I liked episode 6 more than my wife did. I had been wondering how this kid could be Wanda's son, because it didn't make sense. Now, with William Kaplan dying in that car accident and the boy becoming a vessel, I like how they handled it, and it goes a little darker. Since we hadn't had any backstory, I guess we needed some. I also felt bad for the original kid.
My wife felt "this episode moved kind of slowly like it was more about him accepting" an identity we had mostly figured out already. I agree it got a little slow because it was rehashing things we knew.
I don't think the fallen witches are gone for good
With Agatha and Billy now the only ones left on the road, I expect Aubrey Plaza's character to come back. I also think everybody else will probably all return at the very end, because I don't think they're dead.
Overall, I feel the show is dragging a little. It took six episodes to reveal who this kid is, and if there are around 10 episodes I'm not sure what fills the rest. Still, I think the shorter runtime works for the story they're telling, and as an October Halloween show for the two of us, it was fun.
Did the Billy Maximoff reveal in episode 6 feel worth the wait?
