Star Wars Jedi 3 Rumors Point to a Big Time Jump That Could Spell Trouble for Cal Kestis

A new rumor about an older Cal Kestis raises a tricky question about how his story fits into the original trilogy, and whether he survives the final chapter at all.

The next chapter of Cal Kestis's story now has a rumor attached to it worth taking seriously: insider Tom Henderson reportedly heard that Star Wars Jedi 3 will feature an older Cal, suggesting another substantial time jump between games. That has not been confirmed by Respawn or Lucasfilm, but I think it makes sense, and it creates a real problem for how this story can end. After everything that happened in Jedi Survivor, I think Respawn is preparing to either kill Cal, turn him into something dangerously close to a dark Jedi, or somehow do both.

Jedi 3 Is Confirmed, But Almost Nothing Else Is

Jedi 3 is real. EA has confirmed Respawn is developing what it calls the final chapter of Cal's story, and Cameron Monaghan revealed years ago that work on the third game had already begun, describing it as a massive undertaking. As of right now, though, the game still does not have an officially announced title, trailer, or release date.

That means the wilder rumors and fan-made thumbnails floating around online showing an older Cal fighting Starkiller do not count as confirmation of anything, no matter how convincing they look.

Respawn Has Changed a Lot Since Jedi Survivor

Respawn has been through major changes since Jedi Survivor. Stig Asmussen, the director of both previous games, left the studio to form a new company, and Respawn was hit by layoffs and restructuring that included adjustments to the Star Wars Jedi team. That created concern among fans, and honestly, it should have.

Respawn has publicly said the next Jedi game is moving forward and that it wants to raise the bar again for both storytelling and gameplay. That sounds good, but it is also corporate speak. As I see it, "raising the bar should probably begin with releasing the PC version in a state that doesn't make your graphics card sound like the Death Star preparing to fire."

Tom Henderson's Rumor of an Older Cal Creates a Timeline Problem

The most interesting rumor right now comes from insider Tom Henderson, who reportedly heard that Jedi 3 will feature an older Cal Kestis, suggesting another substantial time jump between games. This has not been confirmed by Respawn or Lucasfilm, so it is not a fact, but as I put it, "I trust Tom and it makes sense."

Fallen Order took place approximately five years after Revenge of the Sith, and Survivor jumped forward another five years, placing Cal's story during the same general period as the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. If the third game makes another large jump, Cal could end up operating dangerously close to the beginning of the original trilogy.

That sounds exciting, but it also creates a problem. By the time Luke begins his journey, Cal Kestis is nowhere to be seen, Tanalorr is never mentioned, the Hidden Path is not publicly operating from a hidden planet the Empire cannot reach, and Darth Vader never complains about a red haired Jedi destroying Imperial equipment. So what happened to him?

Does Cal Kestis Die, or Just Disappear?

The obvious answer is that Cal dies. This is the final chapter, his fight against the Empire keeps becoming more desperate, and Star Wars has never encountered a surviving Jedi without immediately considering different ways to traumatize and kill them.

Even so, I do not think Cal's death is guaranteed. Final chapter could simply mean the conclusion of his story rather than the end of his life. Cal could abandon the fight, remain hidden on Tanalorr, or leave the known galaxy with Merrin and the surviving members of the Hidden Path.

Lucasfilm has recently teased that more Cal stories are coming. That does not prove he survives Jedi 3, since those stories could take place earlier in the timeline, but it does tell me Lucasfilm does not appear ready to throw this character away.

Cal's Dark Side Struggle Could Be the Real Center of Jedi 3

The more interesting question to me is whether Cal survives Jedi 3 as the same person. Jedi Survivor showed him using the dark side, and after Bode's betrayal and the destruction of the archive on Jedha, Cal stopped merely feeling angry and started using that anger as a weapon. Players can literally activate Cal's darkness during combat and watch him cut through Imperial soldiers with it.

That ability was not included simply because Respawn wanted a cool power. Cal is becoming stronger, but he is also becoming less certain about where his limits are, and that feels like it is setting up something bigger.

Cal is also trying to guide a traumatized child while barely controlling his own rage, and that relationship could be the center of Jedi 3. Even if she understands why Cal did what he did, that does not magically remove any of the trauma.

If she turns out to be Force sensitive, which Respawn has deliberately left open, Cal may attempt to train her, putting him in the exact position his own mentor once occupied: the survivor becomes the teacher. But Cal has never completely decided what kind of Jedi he wants to be, or whether he even wants to be one. He rejects the old Order's rules, embraces his bond with Merrin, and is willing to use abilities traditional Jedi consider dangerous. Does that make him evolving, or does it make him the perfect target for the game's villain?

Who Is the Villain? Vader, a New Inquisitor, or the Emperor

The obvious answer is Darth Vader. If the Empire discovers Tanalorr, Vader personally attacks the sanctuary, and that is a final battle. But Vader cannot lose. Cal could defeat him temporarily to escape, or survive another encounter, but he cannot deliver a final victory over Vader without breaking the original trilogy. Vader works better as the unstoppable force hanging over the story, the threat that appears when everything else has already gone wrong.

I think the actual villain needs to be someone new, maybe an Imperial officer or inquisitor responsible for hunting Cal, someone who studies him specifically. That would give Respawn a lot of creative freedom. Sending an ordinary inquisitor after him would probably be a bad idea.

Another option is the Emperor, not as a conventional lightsaber boss but as the intelligence behind the attack, learning about Tanalorr, recognizing its value as an unreachable Imperial fortress, and manipulating Cal through visions. Having said that out loud, I am not sure that would work either, since we have seen that kind of manipulation before. I genuinely do not know what the answer is here, and there are still open questions about whether Cal sacrifices himself or abandons his family.

My Prediction for How Jedi 3 Ends

My prediction is that Jedi 3 will have a big time jump, that Cal and Merrin will have turned Tanalorr into a base for the Hidden Path, and that the Empire eventually finds a way to reach the planet. I think a new Imperial dark side hunter leads that search, with Vader remaining the larger threat behind them, and that the attack forces Cal to draw more heavily on the dark side. I think by the second act, or even by the end of the first act, Cal is not going to be a good guy anymore.

By the final act, I think Vader reaches Tanalorr, Cal stays behind to stop him while Merrin escapes, and that sets up a heroic death. But maybe do not show him dying outright. Have the fortress collapse, similar to how Scarlet Witch's fate was left ambiguous, where you see a small sign of what happened to him but no confirmation he is dead. Have Vader walk out and let everyone believe Cal sacrificed himself. Even then, that is not full closure either.

"There's definitely a good chance that Cal does not make it out of this game. I really feel that way." I do not really want Vader to be the final villain, but it is hard to see where else the story goes, and if the villain is someone you already know the ending for, that does not offer a lot of closure either. So how do you think Jedi 3 should end for Cal Kestis?
