Avengers: Doomsday: what clues are on Doctor Doom's jacket?

Robert Downey Jr. wore a green mechanic-style jacket covered in patches for the latest Avengers: Doomsday promo, made for Marvel fans in India for Diwali. I think the jacket and a set of official posters hold some big clues we may have missed. The patches are references to automotive products, services and other blue collar services, and they point to other Marvel characters Doctor Doom seems set to defeat or control in Doomsday.

Avengers: Doomsday, with Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, opens December 18. Before getting into the details, rest in peace to our Professor Charles Xavier, Patrick Stewart, who we will see as Professor X in his final film in Avengers: Doomsday.

Robert Downey Jr.'s Diwali promo hints Doomsday goes from light to dark

The promo opens with Downey saying "Namaste, India." He explains that the best thing about Diwali is that it marks the end of one chapter and the start of another, which is something the cast knows well. But instead of moving from darkness into light, he says he thinks this one is going the other way. He closes by wishing everyone a happy Diwali and saying he will see them at Avengers: Doomsday.

If you don't know, Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights. It symbolizes the move from darkness to light and the victory of good over evil. That's why Downey jokes that in Doomsday everything may be heading in the opposite direction. Diwali runs for five days, from late October into early November, according to the lunar calendar. After a month of celebrating Halloween, it felt right to end on something a bit brighter.

We first saw Downey in this green mechanic-style jacket back in August. It seems Marvel recorded some of these promos at that time. The patches reference automotive products, services and other blue-collar businesses, and they point to Marvel characters who Doom seems likely to defeat or control in Doomsday.

The patches on the front of the Doctor Doom jacket

On the front you'll find Stan Lee Speedy Express, which is clearly a reference to Stan Lee. There's Rogers Roto-Rooter, a nod to Steve Rogers. Up top, a yellow eye looks like something to do with a panther, and I think those are Black Panther's claw marks. There's Doombot Bolts, Boris Towing, and Reed's Repairs, where it looks like Reed Richards' arm is stretching out into the shape of a wrench.

There's Thanos Stump Grinding and 1-800-Gauntlet. There's Kirby's Go-Karts, and Pete's Parking Garage with a Spider-Man web design across it. There's a Russo Brothers patch, and a Thor patch that points to Thor. There's also Xtreme Energy with the X-Men logo. The fun part is that if you drop the EX, you're left with "treme," which is possibly a hidden joke about Gambit. Finally, there's Earth-828 Gasoline and Grimm's Garage, with Clobberin' Time.

On the cuff in the promo, the patch reads Ultron AI. In the photo it looks like something else, which brings me to the problem with the back of the jacket.

The back of the jacket points to SHIELD and Obadiah Stane, and possibly Sentry

It looks like the only image we have of the back of the jacket, at least the full back, has been altered with an AI tool. That's why some of the words look like nonsense or seem wrong. Still, it's the only complete angle we have, so I've done my best, and I think we can work out what it originally said.

There's a Shell gas logo that reads SHIELD. There's one I'm not sure about. There's a Lang something. There's Obadiah's Oil Change, a nod to Obadiah Stane. There's a Bob's something, which I think would be a reference to Bob Reynolds, the Sentry. There's Happy's Coffee, which I think points to Happy Hogan.

There's something called Doomsday Prepper, which is a reference to Doctor Strange, Hulk and Doomsday Diesel. And at the very bottom is Sue's Service and Self Service.

Who designed the Avengers: Doomsday jacket

From talking with other producers on Marvel productions, I know that costume designers on these films and TV shows often design special jackets for the stars to wear on the promotional tour. The costume designer on Avengers: Doomsday is Judianna Makovsky, one of the best in the superhero genre. She has worked with the Russo brothers on all of their Marvel movies, and also on James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy and his new DC films, Superman and Man of Tomorrow.

I'm not sure whether she made this jacket full of inside jokes, and I don't know whether someone else on the production or at the studio made it either. Either way, what we're seeing are references to the Marvel heroes and characters in this movie or in Secret Wars, to various producers on the film, and maybe to some inside jokes, especially with Thanos, Ultron and Boris.

Thanos and Ultron may be Doctor Doom's trophies

With Thanos and Ultron, we were already getting hints that these villains from past Avengers movies are going to be Doctor Doom's victims in this film, because he collects trophies from them. We saw this in the Doctor Doom trophy room collection at New York Comic Con, which seemed to be based on the Fortnite Doctor Doom collaboration.

For Thanos, the moment Doctor Doom kills Thanos was shown in a laser display at the 2025 Disney Shanghai expo, inspired by Jonathan Hickman's Secret Wars #8. Hickman himself has confirmed he is a consultant on the movie. I'm not sure about the references to Thanos's severed arm and the Gauntlet. Maybe we'll learn that Doom did something like what Thor did at the start of Endgame, and cut off his arm to get the Gauntlet.

It remains to be seen what Ultron's real plan is in Vision Quest, but a video game called Countdown to Doom can be seen on his wall of TVs. It's a real game, but they kept it in many shots. I've theorized before that Ultron may know that Doomsday, and Doctor Doom, are coming.

Doctor Doom, Loki and the TVA, plus the 12-spoke clock poster

Speaking of villains from past Avengers movies, from what we know, Doctor Doom is going to attack Loki in this movie and the TVA will come under attack. In an earlier promo, Thor and Steve are seen heading to the TVA through the Bifrost. As I read it, that's actually Thor with Doctor Doom disguised as Loki on the way to the TVA.

Marvel Studios also released a Doomsday poster showing Doom in stained glass in front of a 12-spoke clock. Each of its 12 segments holds an orb. Those orbs may represent other worlds, or possibly the skulls or limbs of the people he has torn apart.

Who is Boris in Avengers: Doomsday

Boris Towing was on the jacket. Boris is the member of the clan Victor von Doom comes from. He looked after young Victor after Victor's father, Werner, and mother, Cynthia, died. When Victor left Latveria to continue his studies, Boris was left to lead the clan in his absence.

Some people believe that a character named in costume leaks as Boris will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, and that it could be a name given to Doctor Strange, because Strange serves Doctor Doom in this form.

Doom's witches, Sandra Hüller and his dead wife

One of the posters shared for Avengers: Doomsday specifically highlights Doom's relationship with his Latverian witches. It has been confirmed that Sandra Hüller is in the film. Is she under one of these masks, is she Doom's dead wife, or possibly both?

Of the new posters, this one from Dolby may be my favorite. It possibly shows the moment Doctor Doom first uses magic. Right at the center is a detail I've talked about before: the bandage or cloth tied around his left arm. I think it could be a piece of cloth from his dead wife, which he carries as a token of his love and a reminder of why he's doing all of this.

What is falling in the Dolby poster

In this poster, some kind of rain, or maybe ash, is falling. Are we looking at the ruins of Latveria, the result of the Fantastic Four's actions in The Fantastic Four: First Steps? Is this ash from an alternate reality version of Thanos who snapped and turned lives to dust? Or are we seeing the debris of the worlds Doom destroyed at the start of creating Battleworld, when he shattered three worlds?

The dead trees, the spiky structures in the background and the statue bases on the left look like the field of broken statues where we saw Doom fight Thor in Doomsday footage.

The Danny Ramirez promo and Joaquin Torres's Steve Rogers theory

There's also a promo with Danny Ramirez, Anthony Mackie, Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell and Simu Liu. They announce that the rumors are true and tickets for Avengers: Doomsday are now on sale, and that's all they can say. Ramirez tries to tell fans more and gets shut down, and the group says they can't wait for everyone to see the movie on December 18.

No new footage is shown here, but what is Danny Ramirez, who plays the new Falcon, so eager to tell us? Will Doomsday finally answer Joaquin Torres's conspiracy theory from the first episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, that Steve Rogers was on the moon? Maybe in Doomsday, when Joaquin sees Steve Rogers stepping out of the Fantastic Four's ship into Avengers Tower, he'll finally get to ask the old man about it.

Marvel believed it needed Robert Downey Jr. to wrap up the saga, so it paid him accordingly, while Johansson and Renner lacked that same leverage. Downey elevated the franchise like Jordan elevated teammates, and whenever people wonder why Disney does something, the answer is always money.

Avengers: Doomsday reportedly never explains the Doom and Stark resemblance because that answer is being saved for Secret Wars. An insider who knows the plot says the film does not address it, calling that the right decision, suggesting Doom stays masked for most of Doomsday with only a final reveal.
