Avengers: Doomsday Easter Egg Theory: Doctor Doom's Belt Key May Point to a Battleworld That Already Exists
A key on Doom's armor and a giant keyhole in Marvel's Shanghai laser show suggest to me that Victor Von Doom had been building Battleworld for years before the film even begins
A key on Doctor Doom's belt and an enormous keyhole in Marvel's Shanghai laser show may be the same Easter egg, and together they suggest to me that Battleworld already exists before Avengers: Doomsday begins. I think these two official reveals, shown on the same weekend, quietly tell us what Doom has been up to and what his plan is.
This is the first part of a three part series, something I had never done before in eight years of covering Marvel movies. The series looks at two officially revealed but hidden Easter eggs. Marvel had only just revealed one of them. The other, I believe, Marvel had been working on since pretty much the beginning of the MCU. After those, the series builds to a full Avengers: Doomsday plot breakdown based on what they point to.
Two official Doctor Doom reveals in China hide connected Easter eggs
When I wrote this in November 2025, Marvel Studios had given us two official looks at Doctor Doom. One was a large, high definition graphic on the side of an expo in China. The other was a laser show on the expo floor the following day. At that point, these were really the only official previews we had for Avengers: Doomsday.
What caught my attention is that each reveal hides an Easter egg, and the two fit together. The graphic shows the object, and the laser show shows where it goes.
Doom's armor appears to carry trophies from beaten Avengers
The official image, released by Marvel and Disney, shows the armor Doctor Doom wears in Avengers: Doomsday. That is Robert Downey Jr. in the suit. When I first broke down the costume, I pointed out plenty of details that made it seem to me that Doom had not only fought, but probably bested, several Avengers already.
On his arm, it appears he is wearing one or a couple of Shang-Chi's Ten Rings. The emblems where his cloak attaches over the breastplate seemed to show Mjolnir and Captain Marvel's star. I may have been wrong about that star, since it may be the star of Latveria. But I was right that the costume carries several details from the Avengers, because the laser show the next day showed repulsors in his hands that look very much like Iron Man's. He has certainly borrowed a lot of tech, artifacts, or both from the heroes he has fought.
The key on Doctor Doom's belt that I missed the first time
Around then, a wave of AI generated fakes flooded social media, presented as Avengers: Doomsday behind the scenes shots. Every one of these AI reinterpretations of the costume clearly showed something holding his belt together: a key. It was a detail I missed in my first breakdown.
At first glance, a key on a belt buckle does not seem like a big deal. Doom has a castle in Latveria, so surely he needs plenty of keys. Or maybe it opens the cell of a prisoner chained up in his dungeon. Or maybe the laser show the next day actually presented a structure with an enormous keyhole for that very key.
The laser show's giant keyhole points to Battleworld
I believe the key belongs to none other than Battleworld. What tells me that structure is Battleworld, or Doom's attempt at recreating a reality made up of pieces of other timelines, is the animation leading up to it. Doom uses his fist to pull together a huge number of shards, pieces of a broken multiverse like the ones shown very clearly in the What If series.
All of those pieces come together into one monolith with a huge keyhole, presumably for the key on his belt.
Doom has been building Battleworld for years, not during Doomsday
That is a lot for Doom to accomplish within Avengers: Doomsday. More to the point, would Marvel Studios give away the end of the film in its very first reveal, as a laser show, before a single trailer had dropped? "Absolutely not."
I think the key sitting on his costume alongside what might be trophies from beaten Avengers says a great deal about where he is in his story. I do not think he is trying to build and assemble this structure during Doomsday. That would be too much, since he will be busy fighting the Avengers and finishing his plan. Building Battleworld is what he has been doing up to now.
To me, the key and the structure already presented mean he has been working on this for years, maybe even decades. He is not at the start of his conquest. He has been at it for quite some time and is looking to take the final steps. As for why we are running into Doom now, I think that is clearly a consequence of events in the Multiverse Saga. Some things may have forced his hand, and that is a little different from what we saw with Thanos.
Why Doctor Doom is a very different villain from Thanos
I often see people ask why Thanos did not simply go after the Infinity Stones himself from the start, and why he used the likes of Loki or Ronan, characters he probably thought were beneath his power and intelligence. Why gift Loki a stone in the scepter, without telling him it was there, just to get the Tesseract, which was another stone?
Thanos was hiding the fact that he wanted to bring them all together. With a division of labor of sorts, different villains chasing the stones, he thought no one would be any the wiser. He also knew that if he showed up collecting stones himself, those who might stand against him could figure out his plan before he could finish. So when he finally made his move, it was a smash and grab, a race against the clock before enough heroes across the universe could oppose him. It was a strategic plan.
With Doom, I think we will see something far more emotional. Thanos insisted it was not about emotion at all, but about facts, science, and the will to do what he thought was right. Doom's plan will be completely selfish and probably desperate. If any of the leaks and rumors are true, it all centers on him losing his family and trying to remake a reality where they still exist.
I know that might sound like a light retread of Wanda early in the Multiverse Saga. But Victor Von Doom, as presented in the comics over the decades, is so narcissistic that he will do whatever it takes. He is "Machiavellian in the total sense of the term," and to him the ends completely justify the means. Doctor Strange and Wanda paid the consequences for using the Darkhold, recognized their errors, and accepted outcomes that meant they would no longer pose a threat. "You will never get that kind of capitulation out of Doctor Doom." He may be sympathetic in that he believes he is doing the right thing, but he will be totally emotionally driven, "a lot more emotional and uncalculated, more chaotic than Thanos ever was."
Loki's long road to God of Stories hints that Doom's plan hit a snag
We followed Loki through a very extended arc as he became Loki, God of Stories. The time it took him to master that power, as someone who was already a god, suggests it would be an extraordinary, if not impossible, feat for someone who started as a mortal human being like Victor Von Doom.
So I think there are probably a couple of pieces of Doom's plan that he either did not work out, could not account for, or had worked out, only for events in the Multiverse Saga to change everything. That is where part two of this series picks up, with what I think is Marvel's longest running Easter egg.
Do you think the key so clearly visible on Doom's belt is the key to what we think is Battleworld?
