Avengers: Doomsday ScreenX Trailer Reveals a Red Sky, More Latverian Witches and Kate Bishop's Apartment

The wider ScreenX frames add new detail to Doctor Doom's throne room, Cassie Lang's kitchen, Steve and Peggy's home and Thor's battle with Doom, while official shirts name the Sentinels' targets

The ScreenX version of the Avengers: Doomsday trailer shows us a deep red sky behind Thor's fight with Doctor Doom, what may be five Latverian witches or witch like figures in Doom's throne room, and a kitchen that looks like Kate Bishop's apartment. On top of that, official Avengers: Doomsday shirts heading to New York Comic Con confirm new locations like the Sanctum Sanctorum and Avengers Mansion as stops on a Sentinel tour.

Later in this piece I will also get into a possible pyramid hiding in one of the shots, and what it could mean for where these battles with Doom are really taking place.

The ScreenX Doomsday trailer uses Marvel's own wider frames, not invented imagery

This ScreenX trailer is the same D23 trailer that we got in August, but it now includes expanded versions showing peripheral screens for a number of shots. ScreenX is an immersive film exhibition experience created by the Korean company CJ 4DPLEX, using peripheral screens that expand the frame as it was shot by the filmmaker. For most films, the movie is retrofitted to project new expansions on the side screens to make the audience feel surrounded by the film. For some parts the side screens just stay black, for others they show expansions of walls or background surfaces using effects, and sometimes they bleed over characters and elements on the sides of the frame.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day was the first movie ever shot with ScreenX in mind. Destin Daniel Cretton and his crew shot a number of action scenes with some of Spider-Man's webbing action happening on the peripheral screens, like Peter's whole fight with the Hand ninjas, and a prison setting was designed to look very cool in ScreenX. Maybe that sounds fun to you, maybe it is not your thing.

Another way ScreenX fills in the sides is by using different angles of shots from the studio that show elements not included in the frame of the trailers as released online. Trailer post production finishing houses will often export different aspect ratios, with taller frames for IMAX versions and now wider frames for ScreenX. So ScreenX did not make this stuff up. It all came from Marvel Studios and what the Russo brothers actually shot for Doomsday.

Doctor Doom's throne room now shows up to five witch like figures

The first major new detail is the shot that angles down on Dr. Doom in his throne room, and it is our best shot yet of the Latverian witches behind him. We started to see this in August with the D23 trailer. There is not just one witch directly behind him on that specific tiled region of the floor with the Latverian runes. I think that is the green cloaked one we saw at Comic Con, but there are also two more right behind him: the brown cloaked witch on the left and maybe even the purple cloaked witch on the right, in the middle section.

Now, on the left peripheral screen in ScreenX, we see two more witches or witch like figures, bringing the total to five. I think these two might actually be what we thought was the male witch design with the hole in the forehead. That costume design went around in August, has so far never been confirmed by Marvel, and was claimed by someone online to be codenamed Boris. If this costume design is legitimate, we assume this might be Doctor Strange or a variant of him, needing that hole in the mask for the third eye on the forehead in order to see out of it.

But the idea of there being two Borises is a bit confusing. Would we take that to mean that both Doctor Strange from Earth 616 and his variant Sinister Strange, from the post incursion universe seen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, could both be serving Dr. Doom in this movie? Or could the second of these side figures actually be Charlize Theron's Clea, leaving the other three witches to be completely different figures?

Scott and Cassie Lang's kitchen points to Kate Bishop's apartment

The next shot with added context is Scott Lang kissing Cassie Lang on the forehead. Before, we were not sure what kitchen this takes place in. Now, thanks to ScreenX, we can see a specific ladder staircase on the left, making this unmistakably the apartment of Kate Bishop, seen in the Hawkeye series and in the post credits scene of The Marvels.

This would suggest that Cassie Lang and Kate Bishop might be roommates, and that Hailee Steinfeld might also make an appearance in Avengers: Doomsday. Perhaps Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan might also appear, because that post credits scene from The Marvels suggested Kamala and Kate were going to team up in this location.

When I interviewed Iman in 2023 after that movie came out, I asked whether the scene with Kate Bishop was originally scripted to have Kamala meeting someone else. Her answer: "Someone else's plural. There was a few people." She added that she liked the final version better because she wants to see Kamala collect her Infinity Stone. I think this now confirms that one of those others was going to be Cassie Lang after the events of Quantumania, and the other might have been Dominique Thorne's Riri Williams, Ironheart. In Marvel Zombies it was Kamala, Kate and Riri together, and I think Marvel at some point just planned that grouping in live action.

Hailee Steinfeld and Iman Vellani stay coy about Doomsday

On The Tonight Show, Hailee Steinfeld was cryptic about her possible appearance. Jimmy Fallon brought up the rumour that she might be in Avengers: Doomsday and pointed out that he did not see her chair when the cast list was announced. Steinfeld said her husband had called her asking if she was in it, and that she told him, "you know, I actually have no idea." Her final word on it was "Time will tell."

What does that mean? If she had not shot anything for Doomsday or Secret Wars, there was an easy denial right there. So her answer tells us that she will be in at least one of these two movies.

Iman has so far had to play coy about any possible involvement. During a junket interview last April with Andy Serkis, when Doomsday came up, the response was "No, you can't say that," before the conversation was steered back with "Gollum's happening for sure."

A wedding photo complicates Loki's visit to Steve and Peggy

The next widened shot shows Loki at Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter's house. On the right peripheral screen, we can see what looks like a wedding photo of Steve and Peggy. Here is the odd thing. The Avengers: Endgame Encore extended final scenes suggest that Loki knocks on Steve and Peggy's door right when Steve gets back, moments after he reunited with Peggy and started dancing.

But in the July 20th trailer that added the shot of Loki handing Steve the TVA calling card, and in the August 14th D23 trailer, which is the version we are seeing here, Steve had a wedding ring when we see him holding the card. That is how we knew it was Steve. That would suggest Loki visits Steve several times in this movie.

Or Loki could visit him once, do whatever he does to help Steve and Peggy, and leave Steve with his TVA card. Then years later, after Steve is married with a wedding ring and a baby, something happens with that baby, and we see Steve pulling out the old card. That would mean the card close up in the trailer is from a different scene.

A red sky burns behind Thor's fight with Doctor Doom

The coolest new context comes in the scene where Thor fights Dr. Doom. This version sadly does not yet have the Kirby crackle I pointed out previously from the silence your phones promo, but on the peripheral screens the sky is a deep red. A red sky is something we have not had that pronounced in the Doomsday trailers. Earlier shots showed an orange tinted sky that could just be the sun shining through a red sky that is darker in other parts.

The angles of Thor battling Doom have so far stayed in tighter close ups angled downward, or with only a cloud covered horizon, or lit mostly by the lightning from Stormbreaker. Now, on the sides, "this is a red sky, folks." In Jonathan Hickman's Secret Wars comic crossover event, the sky would turn red when another Earth was appearing in very close proximity on the horizon, an effect of that atmosphere beginning to collide with this one. I can't wait to see this in the background of many of the shots in Avengers: Doomsday.

A possible pyramid hints Doom's battles could be in the Void

One additional possible detail comes in the shot of Dr. Doom flying through the breaking window and landing in the alternate suit. A fan online spotted that you might be able to see a pyramid on the left peripheral screen, though you really have to brighten up that part of the shot.

You may remember the pyramids of Giza being among the wonders of the world that had been pruned to the Void in Loki season 1 episode 5. So this could suggest that all of these exterior fights with Dr. Doom, including the shots of the Sentinels rising, even with the red sky in the background, might actually be the Void as it transitions into Battleworld. We know from Deadpool and Wolverine that a Sentinel leg was left in the Void. That is how Deadpool and Wolverine initially escaped Cassandra Nova's compound.

Sentinel tour shirts put Avengers Mansion on the map

The possible masked Latverian witch form of Doctor Strange brings up an interesting bit of news from official Avengers: Doomsday shirts going on sale at New York Comic Con. The theme is a Sentinel tour showing where the Sentinels will be making stops in Doomsday: Avengers Mansion, New York; Sanctum Sanctorum, New York; Bethesda Terrace, New York; 42 Baxter Building, New York; and Doomstadt, Latveria. Another yellow shirt adds Yancy Street, New York; Times Square, New York; and Outer Space. These Sentinels are getting around.

Avengers Mansion was originally the home and base of operations for the Avengers in their original run from 1963 onward, the former Stark family manor at 890 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Stan Lee based it on the Henry Clay Frick house on Fifth Avenue that he used to walk past on his way to work. While the Avengers are known for Avengers Tower, built on the showy infrastructure of Stark Tower, the mansion has been another more residential base for various eras of Avengers and New Avengers.

I think we could look at this as a potential base for Captain America Sam Wilson's OG Avengers, the faction suing the New Avengers, aka the Thunderbolts. This could be where Sam Wilson, Joaquin Torres, Scott Lang, Thor and others have their meetings. Maybe it is a mansion Tony left in his will to whatever Avengers remained after he died in Avengers: Endgame. We might have already seen its interior back in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, in Tony Stark's memory of the last time he saw his father Howard and mother Maria. The Russo brothers already shot that scene, so maybe they will revisit the location. Or, since Kate Bishop is apparently joining the mix, maybe she donated her mother Eleanor Bishop's fancy penthouse for Clint Barton and the other Avengers to use.

The Sanctum Sanctorum and Bethesda Terrace bring back Endgame history

The Sanctum Sanctorum pretty much tells us the Sentinels are going to attack the mansion at 177A Bleecker Street where Doctor Strange resides. That is the same place where the Ancient One warned Bruce Banner in Avengers: Endgame that they would be defenseless, and doomed to use her words, if Steve Rogers did not properly return the Infinity Stones to their points in time.

Bethesda Terrace is the area in Manhattan where, at the end of 2012's The Avengers, Thor took a captured Loki and used the Bifrost to blast them both back to Asgard. In our recent revisit of Endgame, I pointed out how that branch timeline, after Loki vanished with the Tesseract during the time heist, was really moments away from being pruned by B-15's reset charge over in Mongolia.

The Baxter Building, Latveria and outer space round out the Sentinels' targets

I don't know why these shirts say 42 Baxter Building. Earth 42 has its significance to the Spider-Verse movies, and 42 is the all important number in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. But it sounds like Dr. Doom is going to bring those Sentinels over to Earth 828 to attack the Baxter Building of the Fantastic Four. That structure has had to suffer Galactus, and now these. I assume that battle will spill over to Yancy Street and Times Square on Earth 828.

While we are seeing the interior of Doomstadt in these trailers, it blows my mind that we still have not fully seen in any marketing the Marvel heroes battling Dr. Doom's forces in Latveria. I think that is going to be a huge part of the final battle in this movie, and we are still not seeing any of it in trailers yet.

That leaves outer space. Is the battle with the Sentinels going to spill outside the shared atmospheres of these planets? Is Johnny Storm going to lead the Sentinels on a chase in space? Remember that Ned's Spidey tracker app found another Spider-Man seemingly just in space. If that is not Peter Parker having been collected by Dr. Doom the way Bruce Banner was and relocated to the newly forming Battleworld, maybe we will see Spider-Man in this Sentinel battle in outer space.

So where do you think the outer space stop on the Sentinel tour fits into Avengers: Doomsday?
