Lanterns Episode 6 Trailer Breakdown: Who Really Killed Hal Jordan?
New clues from the Bad Optics trailer reopen the mystery of Hal Jordan's death, and I'm weighing every suspect from a scheming Guardian to a mother protecting her son.
Now that the Manhunter conflict on Lanterns seems resolved, episode 6, titled Bad Optics, turns back to the season's deeper mystery: who killed Hal Jordan, and is he even dead. I have not seen any future episodes, so I am working from the same trailer clues as everyone else, but I want to break down every new detail and run through the suspects.
The Bad Optics Trailer Reveals Hal Jordan's Nose Was Broken Before He Was Shot
The Bad Optics trailer revisits the 2026 crime scene and really wants us to believe Hal Jordan is a very dead corpse. At the scene, Carrie Kane says, "Whoever broke his nose probably killed him," which reveals that before Hal was shot in the head, someone broke his nose. That is odd, because Hal would not have fought back, then sat calmly on the bleachers in the snow, and then been executed while seated like that.
More ballistics context comes from the medical examiner, whose lab coat identifies her as Dr. E. Kenzie. I think her first name is Elizabeth, and one nickname for Elizabeth is Bitsy, which might connect her to the "Bitsy" that Manhunter Zoe referenced in the 2007 scene in episode 5 about who to call to take care of a body: "Call Bitsy. Tell her we need a table for one." The medical examiner says, "No signs of him fighting back. Single shot at the head. So the shooter was letting him have it head on."
But if Hal was shot in the head head on, wouldn't that impact knock him back into the row behind him, whether the shooter stood right in front of him or sniped him from across the football field? He would not have died slumping forward like that. That means Hal's corpse must have been posed this way, left peacefully seated in the same spot on the bleachers where John Stewart and Sheriff Carrie found him in episode 1. I don't think it's a certainty that whoever broke his nose is also the one who shot him. It's also odd that Hal isn't wearing heavier outerwear in snow that thick.
Is Hal Jordan Actually Dead? The Duplicate and Hologram Theory
Before getting to suspects, the deeper question is whether Hal Jordan is actually dead. It's a fair question, and many fans don't want him to be immediately dead in the DCU, which is making them look extra hard for clues that he could still be alive. One theory is that Hal might secretly be a manhunter, which we learn do not revert to their natural state upon death until their crystalline hearts are revealed, but I think that theory is out now that we know who the real manhunter was, with maybe one other one out there but not many.
There's also the possibility that Hal conjured a clone or duplicate using the scraping process of the ring. I pointed out in an earlier breakdown that the somewhat unnecessary subplot of Hal scraping his ring to conjure his hologram on the water tower as a long range sentry protocol may have existed to show viewers that Hal could jailbreak his ring to construct a lifelike, continual projection of himself that would not require him to be in close proximity to it, maybe inspired by seeing John Stewart continue to conjure the bird even after John no longer had the ring.
We know from episode 1 that the hologram can appear even when Hal isn't wearing the ring, and John physically touched that hologram on the street, meaning it has weight and mass, so John might not have known the difference when he pulled the ring off Hal's hand. So it's possible that in the gap when John left the lasered motel room for his sniper position, either before or after he shot Manhunter Zoe, Hal could have crawled to a nearby lantern, recharged, scraped the ring again, conjured a new hologram of himself in this era, given it the ring to avoid being killed, then crawled off to hide. We know one additional shot of him posed this way appeared in trailer footage that wasn't included in episode 5.
HBO's Spanish Subtitles Briefly Called Hal a Clone, Then Quietly Fixed It
Those Spanish subtitles on HBO were discovered by viewers on Sunday evening and were still up on Monday afternoon when I checked, but by Tuesday they had been fixed to just say Hal. There are a few ways to read this. Conspiracy theorists could say HBO and DC Studios were covering their tracks and that this proves the Hal in that scene is an actual duplicate, or maybe it was simply an innocent translation error that HBO fixed to avoid further confusion.
I should note that around 35 minutes into episode 5, in the scene where John calls his parents, John Senior and Bernardet, to patch him through to the guardian Lianna, the same Spanish subtitle track labels Bernardet as "Lianna." Are we supposed to read that as the guardian posing as Bernardet in that moment, similar to the T-1000 posing as John Connor's stepmom in Terminator 2, or did the translation service just run something through AI and produce an odd hallucination? Having broken down enough shows and manifested myself enough times, I think the latter is probably the truth.
A Behind the Scenes Photo Shows a Gray Bearded Hal Jordan in the 2026 Era
There is more to the story of Hal Jordan in this later period, because a behind the scenes shot shows a very gray Hal Jordan in a diner booth with John Stewart, who is sporting a goatee, meaning this must be the 2026 era John and Hal. That means they are shooting a scene where Hal isn't dead in this era, which could be the 2026 hologram backup. But in that same photo, Hal has the broken nose just like the corpse did, so maybe it's a backup taken from the moment of his death, or maybe 2026 Hal is totally alive and the corpse on the bleachers is the hologram.
That's what makes this show hard to predict from trailer and behind the scenes shots. We're dealing with several time periods, manhunters who can take human form, guardians who can take human form, guardians who might be lying, everybody possibly lying, hologram backups you can physically touch, miraculous manhunter healthcare that can bring people back to life or apparently create life, and showrunners who love playing mind games week to week. I still can't make sense of that image of a full gray 2026 era beard, since Hal's stubble was much shorter on his corpse at the end of the pilot, so when would he have let himself grow a full beard by 2026.
Whatever gets revealed, I don't think the DCU is finished with Hal Jordan. Either he is actually dead and gets resurrected the way Hal Jordan is in the comics, or he isn't actually dead and in 2026 used a duplicate as a decoy to catch a killer he knew was targeting him. But the fact that episode 6 brings this corpse, whatever it is, to a medical examiner to confirm a death tells us there was a shooter and there was a corpse.
Suspect: Noah Min, the Possible Manhunter Grandson
Noah shot to the top of my list after episode 5. Before Manhunter Zoe was killed, she told her step grandson, "What did I tell you about spy?" and he answered, "See without being seen," and she also told him, "But no matter what happens, don't forget everything I've told you." It sounds like one generation of Manhunter passing wisdom to another to keep the mission alive.
Episode 5 also established that Carrie Kane fled to Rushville to escape a crime family in Gotham, and that after saving her, Manhunter Zoe made Carrie promise to repay that debt with a pound of flesh. Carrie later tells Hal, "I owe her," and when he asks what Zoe gave her, Carrie says, "A miracle." About ten seconds later comes the exchange, "Why don't you think about your son?" and "I am thinking about my son." Episode 1 also showed John teaching Noah to aim his football throw by imagining it going through the tire rather than aiming directly, setting up Carrie's 2026 line that Noah is tall, on the team, playing quarterback, and all state.
My theory is that Noah's conception might have been the "miracle" Manhunter Zoe created in Carrie's womb to bypass the manhunter reproduction limits that seemed to affect the manhunter when it was bonded to Anton, meaning Noah could be a manhunter, or half human half manhunter, who resents Hal for the pain he brought to Rushville. But Zoe was actually killed by John Stewart, not Hal, and you could argue Zoe deserved it given all the lasering around town. If the mission is to stay hidden, why would Noah risk exposure by murdering the famous Hal Jordan, since manhunters care less about revenge than self preservation. So I need more context before firmly concluding Noah is the killer. Manhunter, yes, I really do think so. Shooter, I'm not so sure yet.
Suspect: A Not Actually Dead Manhunter Zoe
There is speculation that something was off about Zoe's death in episode 5. Why did she smile when she sensed John had her in his crosshairs? Why did she go down so easily when Anton said manhunters would never welcome death? And she did already fake her death once before.
The episode ripped her heart out to prove she was an actual manhunter, and she died. When Lianna inspected the heart, I think if anything had been off about this unique Guardian design, it would have come up then. I think she smiled simply because she knew she left behind another manhunter in Noah and that her personal mission was complete while the broader manhunter mission lived on. I do think Manhunter Zoe wanted Hal dead, but I don't think a version of her survived into 2026 to shoot him. The season seems done with that character's arc, and I don't think revealing something new about her to solve this mystery would land dramatically for the audience.
Suspect: Lianna, the Guardian I Don't Trust
This show has told us from the beginning not to trust the guardians, and not to trust Lianna specifically. She's the only guardian we've seen, and some believe she isn't actually a guardian but another manhunter. She did take a tall blue form in episode 3 with Bernardet, but if manhunters can shapeshift they can take any form, and the suit that form wore looks slightly more like the manhunter suit than the guardian robes to me, with the color tone and high collar matching the guardians but the white straps on red looking more manhunter. When Lianna handed Bernardet a huge diamond, maybe there's a connection to the manhunters' crystallized hearts. We know Lianna wants Hal dead, since his loyalty to Sinestro poses a threat.
I keep coming back to the fact that Hal Jordan and Lianna have never been in a scene together on this show. Kyle Chandler and Laura Linney are the two biggest stars of the series, and after five episodes their characters have never even looked at each other, and no trailer has shown them together. I think this is intentional. I think when Hal, or a hologram of him, eventually looks at her, or when John shows a sketch from memory of what form the guardian takes, Hal is going to say that isn't what the guardian looks like, or that the guardian took the form of someone he knows. I think we'll learn that Lianna never actually spoke to Hal in this form, and why, and we'll learn a lot about her true intentions.
I personally like the idea that Lianna is a manhunter who infiltrated the guardians and is trying to bring down the council by disrupting the ring succession process with John Stewart and the Stewart family. It's odd to me that Lianna, an almighty guardian, has to back channel through John's parents' satellite dish instead of talking to John herself or intervening directly, making John do all the heavy lifting of talking to Hal. Another possibility is that Lianna is a younger generation guardian at odds with the council elders and trying to reform it her own way. Either way, there's something sneaky about her that I don't trust, and I think she's going to turn out to be the show's ultimate villain. But if Lianna killed Hal, there are probably more cosmic ways to do it, and I don't see what benefit she'd get from putting his corpse on display like this, so while I think she's the villain, I don't think she's the one who killed him.
Suspect: Sinestro, Too Obvious a Villain
Sinestro is certainly one for theatrics and the most obviously evil character we've met so far. He loves dealing in fear, and posing the corpse of a former lantern would certainly cause fear in a universe he thinks needs more fear in it. But even assuming Sinestro could break out of prison, what would he gain by killing Hal Jordan? Wouldn't Sinestro need Hal as a potential ally as he tries to build his Sinestro Corps of yellow lanterns? I'm ruling him out. It just feels too obvious.
Suspect: The Whole Town of Rushville
In episode 5, a lot of the 101 residents of Rushville died tragic deaths without a manhunter or an Anton alien to blame, and many of them may point to Hal Jordan as the one responsible for disturbing their peace. In episode 6, that rage manifests with Will Min Jr. and John Stewart. John ignites a lantern light for Guy Gardner, tagged with graffiti, at the corner of the old Rushville cemetery, and Will tells him, "The Green Lantern isn't welcome here," even though John isn't even the Green Lantern right now, Guy Gardner is.
Will's hostile tone with John suggests Rushville holds the entire Green Lantern Corps responsible for what happened there. Honestly, Hal Jordan's death is pretty much a who shot Mr. Burns scenario, and everyone in the town is a suspect, which is part of why people are gravitating toward Noah Min as the Maggie Simpson of this town. But I think it's more complicated than that.
Suspect: John Stewart, the Best Sharpshooter We Know
With everyone a suspect, we at least have to consider our primary protagonist, who is the best sharpshooter we know. If Hal further fell under Sinestro's influence sometime between 2006 and 2016 or between 2016 and 2026, we might be looking at a scenario where the fear entity Parallax takes him over and turns him into a serious cosmic threat, which would justify John having to put him down.
But if that's the big twist, I don't know why episode 6 has John saying, with a very sincere tone, "I'm just trying to figure out why he got killed." Also, if the DCU is going to make John Stewart the permanent Green Lantern in Man of Tomorrow, I think it would leave a bad taste for fans if John was the one who fully killed his predecessor. Rewatching the final scene of episode 5, having to do that kind of betrayal is exactly why John gave up the ring, and I don't think anything is going to change his mind on that front.
Suspect: Carrie Kane, a Mother Protecting Her Son
My final suspect is actually a more rational version of suspect one. They named the character after the co-creator of Batman. At the 2026 crime scene, when asked "Anyone else know?" Carrie answers, "Just the groundskeeper." Asked, "You know why he came back here?" she says, "He came back for me."
Could her guilt here be telling us the truth? If Noah Min is the half human half manhunter son I theorized about above, Hal might have learned that truth and threatened to expose it, or threatened the boy, and to protect her son I could see Carrie killing Hal Jordan and then having to process the scene the way crime scenes need to be processed. She may have then lured John Stewart out there to make sure no one else from the 2016 manhunter conspiracy knows the truth.
Hal's corpse being posed the way it is would make more sense in this scenario. It could have started as a semi peaceful conversation between Carrie and Hal, where Hal refused to back down, and Carrie had no choice but to end it right there. Her line, "Whoever broke his nose probably killed him," could be her way of throwing John off her scent, when in reality Hal's nose had been broken from some other event before he ever met Carrie on the bleachers, which would reveal Carrie as the shooter. If Noah really is half manhunter, that gives Carrie a motherly instinct motive and connects everything back to the 2016 manhunter conflict, and it could still be true that Hal Jordan is alive in 2026. I hope that's the case.
The ultimate resolution to this mystery is clearly not going to be this simple. Which of these suspects do you think shot Hal Jordan?
