GTA 6 Gameplay Reveal: Morality Meters, Working Social Media, and a Map Three Times the Size of Red Dead Redemption 2
From a surprise Netflix premiere to a redesigned wanted system and a working social media feed, here is everything spotted in the extended first look at Jason and Lucia's world.
The first official gameplay reveal for GTA 6 premiered on Netflix before it went out to the wider public, and that reveal reportedly crashed Netflix when it first went live. I went through this extended look frame by frame to catalog what it tells us about Jason and Lucia, two criminals who get caught in a much bigger conspiracy after, in Rockstar Games' words, something goes really, really bad. Rockstar describes it as a story about the two being forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive, and this extended look finally shows that relationship in motion.
The map is described as three times larger than Red Dead Redemption 2, which tells you how much ground this world covers between Jason and Lucia's everyday lives in Vice City and the much bigger criminal world they get pulled into. GTA 6 is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, so if you are still on an older console you are out of luck, and there is still no announced release date for PC. The extended look was confirmed to be running on PlayStation 5 at the very end, and three months from now, the game is set to arrive.
Vice City's Rock Ridge Neighborhood Shows NPCs Who Actually Talk Back
The extended look opens with Jason literally being insulted by an NPC, and throughout it the dialogue feels sharper than it did in GTA 5, with NPCs reacting to your appearance and your actions. Reporting from the New York Times describes Rockstar Games building an entire team in Los Angeles dedicated specifically to making NPCs feel more authentic, individually creating each one rather than generating random people and dropping them into the world.
Walking toward the Venture Apartments in a neighborhood called Rock Ridge, the background is packed with detail: the Go Postal postal service returning from GTA 5, Vice City bicycles and bikes scattered around, flyers for charity drives and the Caribbean market, and a scenario where someone has stolen someone else's bike. That callback matters because in GTA 5 you could recover a stolen bike and eventually get paid 100,000 in stocks for the victim's company, which raises the possibility that stock trading is coming back. NPCs are dressed specifically too, including one shirt referencing the game's Haitian neighborhood. The song playing as you approach is identified as Pop Bottles, featuring Lil Wayne, and Sexy Red also appears in the game, which tracks since Vice City is meant to feel like Florida.
Righteous Slaughter, the Vice City Manatees, and a String of Parody Brands
Inside the apartment, Sexy Red's Pound Town plays as you approach a man wearing a Righteous Slaughter Hood Ops shirt, a nod to the in-game video game franchise Righteous Slaughter, which could hint at a next installment showing up in GTA 6 as a parody of Call of Duty's Black Ops. His chain reads S4S, which could stand for something like Sand for Sand, and the same lettering shows up as graffiti tied to a Haitian street gang and possibly a record label called Sound for Sound, since a different NPC later wears the same swag. Elsewhere an NPC reps a Vice City Manatees jersey mocking the Miami Dolphins, and there is Narcos gear parodying the Miami Heat. A logo called Aerys, a parody of Nike, shows up repeatedly, appearing at least twice and possibly three times within the first five minutes alone, which is a funny choice since Nike is the Greek goddess of victory while Aerys would represent rivalry and discord.
A New Dialogue System and a Morality Meter Track How Jason and Lucia Behave
Conversation responses now appear discreetly in the bottom right of the screen instead of taking up the whole frame with a dialogue wheel, which keeps the world feeling grounded. That same interface shows up when interacting with a dog in the apartment, where you can scold, pet, or study it, triggering a smiling emoji. Later, when Jason beats up a man, a devil emoji appears instead, part of what looks like an honor system built around a criminal profile that tracks how much chaos or goodwill you create. Jason and Lucia appear to have separate profiles, meaning you can play them completely differently, though it is still unclear exactly how much this affects the story or its endings.
The Jewelry Store Job Turns Into a Shootout With Raymond and Booby Ike
With Kodak Black's Skrilla playing, a cinematic shows off details like stretch marks on a woman's skin, plus a run of parody brands: Palm and Flute standing in for Arm and Hammer, Rat Out from the pest control company Bugstars that returns from the jewel store job in GTA V, and Grunwald instant dry milk parodying Carnation. The job is sent by a figure named Booby Ike, described on Rockstar's page as a legend of Vice City who runs real estate, strip clubs, and a recording studio. Raymond is on the phone with someone named Ernesto, who seems to be an informant for the police, possibly explaining why Raymond's partner has gone off the grid. As the crew rushes to leave, one worker is carrying a backpack for Crevice, a clothing brand you can buy stock in, and the Aerys logo shows up yet again.
Combat Introduces Lethal Hit Markers, Focus Bars, and Looting
When police arrive, bullets tear through drywall and ricochet off overhead lights while the top left of the screen shows your gun and ammo. A red hit marker signals a lethal takedown and a yellow one signals non-lethal, and aiming will mark both lethal and non-lethal zones on a target. There is also a slow motion feature reminiscent of Red Dead Redemption. Two bars sit in the top right, one for health and one for focus, with a stamina bar expected to join them later; food and beverages in the game appear to boost these stats, and later Jason is shown raiding a fridge for items that offer different boosts. You can loot a downed officer's weapon, and any interactable item, like a duffel bag, gets highlighted.
The Getaway Reveals a New Car Theft System and a Town Called Ambrosia
After escaping, Lucia's disheveled apartment is lit only by candles set dangerously close to clutter, right down to a Mr. Spot cleaning brand bottle. At a parked car, Jason can either smash a window or slim jim the lock by pressing triangle and moving the right stick, letting you steal a car without damaging it or looking as shady. An iguana scurries by, suggesting animals beyond the earlier dog can be studied and chased throughout the world. As the pair flees in the stolen car, signs reveal they are in Leonard County within the town of Ambrosia, a parody of Clewiston, Florida, which is apparently in the middle of a mayoral race featuring a candidate named Aaron Henshaw. Other signs point to Tucker's Citrus Farms and Port Gellhorn, which feels like the seedier part of the map, while the Bellamy Brothers' Let Your Love Flow plays. A morning scene follows with dog walkers, pigeons, and a jogger, plus reflections and leftover rainwater detailed in the background, alongside delivery trucks for Aztec Gold and what looks like a fizzy drink brand.
A Shared Safehouse Hints at Working Out, Banking, and Relationship Systems
The pair's home does not appear to belong to either of them, since there is no photo of Jason or Lucia anywhere in it; IGN has reported that other characters can move in and out of a series of safehouses over the course of the game. The fridge is covered in affirmations about working out and staying healthy, and the New York Times has reported that unlocking higher weights at the gym will require actually mastering the equipment. Bills on the fridge are addressed to Lom Bank, and a Fleeca sign recalls GTA Online. The living room mixes wine and sex toys with a stripper pole, alongside a pop art painting of the Vice City girl from the original game's cover, a Deer Sachs clothing brand, and Sahara Mirage, a parody of Amazon. Physical media still exists in this world too, including a movie called Edged and what looks like a purple PlayStation 5 paired with a PS4 controller, plus toys suggesting whoever lives here also owns a dog.
Jason and Lucia's Relationship Can Be Shaped Through Everyday Choices
De Leopard's Love Bites plays as Jason talks to Lucia about getting ready, with an option to press L2 for Lucia or Circle to ask her to hurry up. Both characters are playable, and as in GTA 5, certain story sections lock you into one or the other without the freedom to switch. Jason can interact with a light switch in the house, suggesting a wide range of small objects will be interactive throughout the game. Turning on the television plays a run of ad parodies, including one for Juice Loose Angstapan first teased in the earlier trailer, and another, reportedly filmed during Red Dead Redemption 2's production, for a Prairie Sandwich Box meal boasting 30,000 calories.
Driving Through Vice City Shows a Redesigned Minimap and Real Street Navigation
Leaving the apartment, the game visibly brightens as your eyes would adjust in real life, and Jason gets into his own car without any hijacking animation. The license plate reads Gloriana, which feels closer to Georgia than Florida, and Depeche Mode's People Are People plays as a new minimap appears in the bottom left, styled much more like a modern GPS, a change that is already dividing opinion online. The convertible top can be toggled mid drive, Jason's brake lights do not appear to work even though his turn signals do, and every street carries a name that lines up with real-world style directions. According to the New York Times, when reporters asked whether Jason could interact with a tennis court seen from the road, they were told he could only pick up a racket and swat a ball, showing there are limits to interactivity even in a world this dense. Elsewhere an NPC rides a motorcycle across a bridge looking dangerously unprepared for it, and a street fight breaks out with a bystander filming it on a phone; it has been reported that working social media feeds will let certain characters blow up online, which lines up with the first trailer's focus on social media. Eating junk food outside a store called A1 Fashions comes with the option to eat or drop the food, and it has also been reported that what you eat will affect your character's weight.
Lucia's Combat Style and Weapon Customization Get Their Own Spotlight
Lucia is shown fighting three men at once, dodging, swinging, and moving around her opponents in a style that lines up with earlier screenshots of her boxing; her character sheet reportedly says that fighting for her family is what landed her in jail in the first place. Weapon cosmetics also get attention: Raymond's gun is gold, Jason's has a scope, and Lucia's is painted red, white, and blue. In another scene Jason dives across a car during a shootout wearing a backpack that parodies Supreme, and the woman with a hammer from the first trailer reappears. Lucia is later shown firing a shotgun one-handed, which looks tough but reportedly also slows her reload. Other glimpses include backyard wrestling and a full armored truck robbery carried out with real procedure against a security firm called Group Six.
The Wanted System Uses Icons for Cameras, Clothing, and Weapons
During a getaway, the heads-up display shows a six-star wanted meter currently sitting at two stars, with icons underneath: a camera for CCTV coverage, two heads when police are searching for both Jason and Lucia together, a hanger once your clothing has been identified, a single head when only one of you is wanted, and a gun icon once police know you're armed. Inside a nearby store, brand parodies like Pissweiser, Pendo Cervesa, and Fat Chips line the shelves, and an ATM is visible for depositing stolen money. Later, fleeing onto the 404 interstate with a cruise ship visible in the distance, the chase escalates to four stars with a helicopter joining in; shooting out tires sends cars flipping dramatically. A redesigned tool and weapon wheel appears alongside wallet and bank icons tied to that same ATM system, and Lucia destroys evidence by lighting and throwing a Molotov cocktail at a car.
Between Heists, Vice City Offers Basketball, Scuba Diving, and Jet Skis
A quieter stretch shows Jason and Lucia on electric scooters, an airboat suited for navigating the Everglades, and Jason shooting hoops using a hold-to-aim power mechanic that rewards him with an on-screen score notification. He is shown wearing a hat for Brian's Boatworks and Marina, which looks like a front for criminal activity. Other activities glimpsed include scuba diving, working out using both L2 and R2 to build strength, riding jet skis, and using binoculars with a zoom toggle in the bottom right to watch the neighborhood. Kayaking, a returning strip club, a zoo, and mini golf round out the list of things to do across the map.
Circuit Racing and a Livestreamer Named Neon Show Off New Systems
A racing sequence set to Devil Woman looks like traditional circuit racing on a closed track rather than street racing, complete with lap time, current lap, race position, and a minimap showing every racer's position alongside the next checkpoint. An item wheel shows clothing pieces rather than weapons, letting you swap gear easily. When Lucia pulls a gun in a jewelry store, nearby NPCs immediately clear out, and wrestling the weapon away from a struggling clerk requires repeatedly mashing Circle. Escaping onto the back of Jason's bike triggers two black stars and the devil emoji again, and popping the trunk reveals a streamer named Neon livestreaming from inside it, with comments and views climbing in real time; pressing R3 toggles between his stream and your own view, offering a glimpse at how social media will work in the game.
The Extended Look Closes at Megamundo With Valentina, Petra, and a Deadly Shootout
A plane trails a banner advertising a club called 919, apparently a parody of a real Miami club spelled out with numbers. Other glimpses include a shooting range, dirt bike racing on dedicated tracks with a visible wipeout, and a two-star chase where switching between Jason and Lucia with R1 also shares their morality meter, followed by a parachute jump off a building. According to IGN, a taxi app called Ride Me will offer fast travel across the map. At an airport, the pair meets a returning character named Valentina, who introduces them to Petra, described as the CEO of a company called Megamundo, possibly a parody of a Spanish-language television network, with the surrounding building serving as its Vice City headquarters. As Phil Collins' Against All Odds plays, the job turns violent when men in hazmat suits appear, visibly draining Jason's health and focus with every shot. According to IGN, the phone menu no longer sits at the bottom of the screen but instead zooms in on Jason or Lucia's hand as they pull it out, though that change is not directly shown here. The extended look ends with Jason caught in an executive suite shootout and Lucia fighting for her life.
Every piece of this, from NPCs reacting to your presence to the way you eat, drive, fight, and interact with Jason and Lucia, points toward Rockstar Games trying to make the world respond to how you actually play, and there is still an entire map, more characters, and more systems left unexplored. I'm going to disappear into Vice City, and I genuinely don't know if I'm ever coming back.
