VisionQuest Final Trailer: Edith, Ultron's Paintings, Jim Hammond and the Hidden Details Behind Vision's Return

A mental mansion, a suspected trap using Tommy as bait, Jocasta and a tagline that keeps pointing back to Wanda

Published 3 October 2026. Words like "tonight" or "next week" refer to that date.

The final trailer for Marvel's VisionQuest is packed with hidden details, from Edith guiding Vision through a trap to Ultron's paintings and the arrival of the original synthetic Human Torch. It has been a while since I have been this excited for a Marvel TV show, because of how it plans to complete the WandaVision trilogy with witchcraft, mutants, hot takes on AI and narrative threads that connect all the dots in the MCU that led up to it.

And still, I really only have the vaguest sense of what this show will be. It all started with a two episode premiere on October 14th.

Vision has apparently relocated to his old haunt with Wanda while his AI past lives inside his mind

VisionQuest tells the story of Vision after he left the Westview Hex in WandaVision with the memories downloaded from the Hex's version of Vision in that Ship of Theseus scene. He has now apparently relocated to Edinburgh, to the bar that Vision and Wanda frequented during their years on the run in Avengers: Infinity War. After some scuffle, he is going to retreat inside his own digital mind, where he houses the other incarnations of Tony Stark's past AI creations, including Jarvis, Edith, Friday, Dummy, U and Ultron.

Meanwhile in the real world, Vision's son Tommy, now living in a real human body thanks to Agatha and Billy's seance in Agatha All Along, is trying to reconnect with his last living parent. Vision is also being hunted by a character who is tracking him down, and Tommy is going to be connected with a woman who has a really cool jacket.

We have seen so many promo bits in the past week that have just been vibes and flashes of other characters and details that it seems pretty impossible to assemble them into any linear narrative. So we are really getting no further idea of what is happening on this show, and I am here for it. I do not need to know the exact A to B story. I just want to know what the vibes and themes will be.

Edith helps Vision walk into a trap at St. Maidens

The trailer opens in a healthcare looking facility where the wall has a sign reading St. Maidens. St. Maidens is a village in England, not far from where we think Tommy Shepherd was arrested. In the lobby, another wall carries the quote "The height of your dreams is determined by the depth of your imagination." Vision checks in with reception and says, "I'm here for the trap," which seems to slow down time from his point of view as the staff open fire on him.

A talk show aired an extended version of the scene, which shows he is being guided by Emily Hampshire's Edith, telling him to track the wardrobe inconsistencies of everyone around him. Edith was the AI in the glasses Tony Stark left Peter Parker in his will in Spider-Man: Far From Home, and a behind the scenes clip even has Edith directly referencing Peter Parker, joking that her first boss was a junior in high school. I love how her perception seems to come from an old school viewfinder toy, with slides popping up from a toaster with Vision on it. Looking through lenses really is the best way for Edith to operate.

At first I wondered if this was a simulation in Vision's mind, but later in the trailer it looks like a real world location where Vision might be rescuing Tommy. So I am guessing he knows it is a trap laid by Paladin, who is hunting him down and using Tommy as bait.

A 1964 Animals song turns Vision's mind into a Ship of Theseus mansion

The music is the Animals' song from 1964, one of the greatest songs ever. It started as an American folk song with unknown origins, based on ballads sung across the American South. The lyrics tell of a house called the Rising Sun in New Orleans, which could be a brothel, a gambling den or even a prison, with a warning to avoid the destructive path it brought the singer. It is the perfect song for this series: it is about characters contained in a house, with wordplay on the son, Tommy, rising from obscurity.

The house in this show is a mansion that is half white with Victorian features and half red brick at the back, which I think represents the Ship of Theseus of Vision's own body. In the August trailer, Ultron was steering a big ship's wheel in his attic, and I think they are going to lean into that; a shot at 44 seconds makes the back of the house look like it is gliding forward like a ship. The window above the front door has the same shape as the viewing deck by Ultron's attic, which matches the orifice on Vision's forehead where Thanos ripped out the Mind Stone.

There is also a statue of Vision battling Ultron that seems to reenact their fight from Avengers: Age of Ultron, whose closing credits featured a very cool statue of all the characters fighting that I feel this could have been part of. Vision views his past MCU moments in a cinema inside the house, including plunging his fingers into Ultron's head and his intimate moment with Wanda in Edinburgh. I really love that it mirrors the way Loki viewed his past life on a projector at the TVA in the first episode of the Loki series.

Ultron's paintings could set up a debate over whether AI can make art

Ultron says, "You're a ghost haunting her footsteps. That dead witch really did a number on you." Careful how you talk about Wanda on this show, Ultron. In his attic we see more of his paintings on one of the TV screens on his wall, which seems to always be set on a painting program. His painting hobby seems to be a big part of his business this season; his character poster showed him holding a palette surrounded by paintings. I think there will be some interesting commentary on whether AI can actually create art, and it will probably be stuck in some uncanny valley.

The city backdrop behind him seems to combine buildings from several cities. I am seeing the Chrysler Building from New York and the Gherkin from London. Is this another painting Ultron can only build from residual architecture because he is AI, like the way Hannibal Lecter sketched parts of Florence from memory for his cell walls in The Silence of the Lambs? Let's go with that.

We also see Ultron trying on a Russian or maybe Sokovian hat, his android form reflected in the mirror. I love this shot: like vampires, there is always something off about the reflection of an AI. I actually think he might be wearing a different hat every time we see him in this trailer.

Vision's pinstripes hide quantum code, and Friday may bring back Tony's death

Vision wears a pinstripe suit in many scenes. In an earlier breakdown, with the help of some amazing coding experts on our subreddit, we translated the code hidden in the pinstripes of his vest and coat as quantum computer code with terms like eigenvalues, Planck's constant, sense of self and consciousness, plus hexadecimal code that translates to who am I or what am I. The show's costume designer responded and confirmed these are things she hand stitched into the pinstripes.

On that note, I have been excited to learn that, apparently through Orla Brady's Friday, we are going to revisit Tony Stark's death scene from Avengers: Endgame from her point of view, since Friday was there for it. Friday was also present when Tony used values like Planck's constant to figure out time travel with an inverted Möbius strip, spectral decomposition and eigenvalues in his algorithm. So she may be useful for Vision to do a different kind of time travel using just quantum code.

Jarvis, Magritte's orange and a house that looks like a ship's bridge

As Ultron says he is living rent free in Vision's head, the sky outside the window is a specific reddish orange with architecture I am still trying to make sense of. It matches the sky outside the front door when Vision appears in his classic look later on. Then there is James D'Arcy as Edwin Jarvis, the humanized form of the original Jarvis AI that Vision came from. It is amazing that they got the actor who played the butler Jarvis in Agent Carter and in the 1970 scene in Endgame to play him.

Behind Jarvis is a framed print of René Magritte's 1964 The Son of Man, but instead of a green apple floating in front of the man's face, a huge orange takes the place of his head. Some see the painting as an early example of intentional uncanny valley, with the eyes peeking out behind the apple and an arm that seems to bend backwards. Magritte said of it: "Everything we see hides another thing. We always want to see what is hidden by what we see." I like to think this might be painted by Ultron, who as an AI would hallucinate an orange instead of an apple, and I am sure the apples to oranges idiom will come up.

A colorful shot shows what looks like Jarvis and Friday turning knobs and dials as the house goes haywire again. Does this not look like the command bridge of a ship or a submarine? House equals Ship of Theseus; I am convinced of it. A long table holds a blueprint map covered in figurines. Are they soldiers? Avengers? The same statues that seem to line the location where Doom fights Thor and other heroes in the Doomsday footage?

Armed guards, a possible Hatfield House location and Tommy in custody

Armed security guards walk out of a fancy estate. I wondered if this could be Hatfield House in Hertfordshire, with its Renaissance statue, which we spotted in the August trailer as a location. Vision also runs down an interior corridor later that might be inside Hatfield House. But there is unfinished white paint on these columns, so I think this could be the back of Vision's mansion as the white Victorian architecture gradually overtakes the red brick. The guards' guns are arranged in a neat symmetry, with what may be silencers on the outer pair, which makes me think this is artificial digital security inside Vision's mind, like the agents in The Matrix.

The actor playing Tommy pleads with law enforcement that he has a family. Vision and Ultron viewed CCTV of this in the August trailer, watermarked Tottenham police station psych eval prisoner Shepherd Thomas. Thomas Shepherd was the bullied boy who nearly drowned when Billy and Agatha's seance transported the detached soul of Tommy Maximoff from Wanda's Hex into him. Like Billy, he would have woken in another kid's body with his Westview memories, the last probably being Wanda telling the boys, "thanks for choosing me to be your mom." Tottenham is in North London, so I guess they transported that soul from New Jersey to the UK. We think Tommy will meet Lisa Molinari, aka Coat of Arms, on a prisoner transport bus.

A failed captcha and a trip to Madripoor

What look like the Stark drones confiscated and repurposed by the DODC, with dark, evil Imperial probe droid paint jobs, hover over a fence near construction cranes before the shot fades to black. The way it fades out weirds me out, as if the trailer wanted to show this awkward shot with no context. Then Ultron demands that Vision free him and save his son, and a big padlock unlatches.

Based on Ultron's outfit, I think this ties to a promo where Vision's house seems to have a security feature to keep the AI locked in with a captcha test asking how many fire hydrants there are. Hilariously, both seem to get it wrong. Maybe I am an AI, but I only see three, plus a parking meter that resembles one. Vision, the more human of the two, says four, and Ultron, further removed from humanity, says five. The image of Griffith Observatory, with its slightly red tinted dome, might have confused them both.

A cargo plane flies to Madripoor, back in the MCU for the first time since The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. I thought this might be where Vision finds Tommy, but it looks like he finds Tommy in the UK. So why go there? Is this where Sharon Carter, the Power Broker, finally returns?

Tommy's rescue and his "Get a grip. Don't believe the blip" shirt

Vision looks set to rescue Tommy from restraints in a facility I think is part of that medical center. I think this is where Paladin, in a heavy coat, blasts them and wipes away some of Vision's flesh to reveal his synthezoid form. So yes, I think this is the medical facility Vision identified as a trap in the opening, which would suggest it is happening in the real world.

A new shot of Tommy shows a shirt that other shots reveal reads, "Get a grip. Don't believe the blip." I love this world detail. Apparently there are conspiracy theorists in the MCU who do not think the Blip happened. I assume they are people who dusted, jumped ahead and thought it was a mass hallucination, then turned on the survivors. Tommy was a product of Wanda's Hex, which started in Westview a month after the Blip ended, so he grew up in a world where no Blip happened. I also do not know if he truly believes it or just got the shirt from a thrift store, like Todd Flanders and his surfer shirt.

Jim Hammond, a murdered creator and missing adamantium

A painting of a man on fire flashes to a figure on fire in the mansion's library as Vision looks down. This is Jim Hammond, the original synthetic Human Torch from the golden age, seen at the expo in Queens in the first Captain America film. I love this Easter egg, and I also saw this painting of the combustible synthezoid at D23. On the show he is known as JIM, which promotional art revealed stands for Joule Individual Machine, a joule being a unit of energy.

A vertical promo last week included a newspaper headlined: Tech giant murdered, butcher bird wings carved beneath victim baffles police. This refers to Phineas Thomas Horton, Jim's creator. I think they are saying Jim went rogue and murdered his creator in a grisly manner. Doesn't this remind you of Ultron turning on his creator Tony Stark? On the side, I love a headline that I am pretty sure says the hunt for missing adamantium continues.

After Captain America: Brave New World established Tiamut was made of adamantium, producer Nate Moore said that was meant to be the birthplace of adamantium in Earth 616. It sounds like he meant that metaphorically in terms of release order. If Jean Grey existed in Earth 616's history, I assume Marvel intends the same for Wolverine, and that requires adamantium in this history. So I am choosing to see this as a reference to a hero around in the MCU's 1940s, having horrible things done to him with adamantium by the Weapons Plus program trying to recreate Captain America's super soldier success. Please use VisionQuest to bring back that metal clawed bar brawl Easter egg from She-Hulk and make it make sense.

Ultron promises to finish what he started, and Lisa's arms arrive

Vision is under assault in the Edinburgh bar where he works. I am thinking Paladin's group or other bounty hunters find him, and he retreats into a storage pantry and enters a meditative trance. An EMP shockwave blasts through a parking lot, and Ultron says, "No, I'm going to fix you," as gloved hands reassemble Vision's broken limbs from the SWORD lab in Florida where Wanda found him in pieces in WandaVision episode 8. So White Vision might now be having memories of Tyler Hayward's group reassembling him into a weapon.

Ultron promises to finish what he started as we see a flashback of him hovering over the Sokovian city. I like that they are not hiding Ultron's evil nature or his plan to go rogue and break out. The room where Vision says, "Ultron, stop," is the same area where Vision and Tommy fight Jocasta.

Lisa Molinari appears in an airplane hangar as robotic arms extend from an apparatus on her back, which seems like the show's version of Coat of Arms. In the comics it is magical sorcery; here it is technology, though in a show where technology is powered by sorcery, we will see. Behind her a chair and crate carry the same knight chestpiece logo. I do not know if that is the company that gave her the arms or a connection to Paladin.

Edith's ritual may unlock buried memories of the Hex

Vision locks down the mansion for some ritual. He pulls the firewall lever and has Edith sit in front of a TV while he levitates in a trance with red glowing eyes. Edith gave Peter Parker access to secrets hidden behind privacy firewalls, so I wonder if she will let Vision see buried memories of the Scarlet Witch's Hex that he lacks immediate access to. That is why I think she sits with legs crossed in front of the TV, since so much of Wanda's Hex came from classic television.

A dark shadowy figure stares down Vision and the other AI in front of the house, and appears again across a tomb in a church, glitching. I am praying this is Billy projecting his wiccan self into Vision's mind to find his father and brother. We also see Tommy and Vision hugging in a swimming pool. I do not know the context, but given Tommy almost drowned, I think it will be a very emotional moment.

I think Jocasta is in the outside world, and Tommy's speed comes out

We get a clear shot of Vision's new form, embracing the yellow, green and red of his comics colors, and it looks so good; clearly Ultron wants to rip off the look as he manifests behind him. Then Jocasta's red eyes glow from under a hood. A promo showed her pulling back the hood, an unnecessary gesture given her nanotechnology body that just looks cool. She looks incredible as a visual effect and costume. She is Ultron's wife in the comics, and in Age of Ultron one of Tony's AI drives, in the drawer where he got Friday, was labeled Jocasta. My theory is that Ultron plans to produce Jocasta as a vessel to escape Vision's mind.

I do think we see Jocasta in the outside world, because a promo gives our first look at Tommy's speedster powers saving someone from her. That woman is Mary McDonnell, President Laura Roslin from Battlestar Galactica, in a still unknown role. I do not know why Jocasta lunges at her, but Tommy moves her head out of the way. She also appears in a shot of Tommy emitting electricity from his hands. He is tortured with electricity at one point, and I do not know if he will absorb and redeploy it. White Vision also fights Jocasta as she fires a repulsor beam, with cases of robotic or armored forms behind them, before the trailer ends on what I think is its wildest shot of Vision's flesh mixed with his synthezoid layer.

The tagline keeps pointing to Wanda

The tagline is "her vision, his quest," and I love it. Everything is so Wanda coded that if she does not return, why are we even here? As I pointed out with the first trailer, flashing code read Vision Wanda 143, or Vision Wanda, I love you. So Elizabeth Olsen, please make an appearance.

Marvel Studios hosts its television panel at New York Comic Con next Thursday. Do you think the shadowy figure is Billy, and will Wanda finally show up in VisionQuest?
