Looking back at my Scarlet Witch Darkhold theory before Multiverse of Madness
I read the Darkhold's Scarlet Witch page as a map of Wanda Maximoff being forged by Infinity Stone energy, a theory worth revisiting as VisionQuest returns attention to the WandaVision corner of the MCU.
Before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was released on May 6, 2022, I took a closer look at one page of the Darkhold, the dark book first seen in the hands of Agatha Harkness in WandaVision. My theory was that this page, which shows a crowned figure implied to be the Scarlet Witch, was telling us Wanda Maximoff had been slowly forged into a living nexus of Infinity Stone energy.
WandaVision (2021) starred Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany and Kathryn Hahn. With Olsen's Scarlet Witch set to play a monumental role in the dark chapter of the MCU that followed, it felt like the right time to revisit what I considered one of the darkest chapters of the MCU. I focused on the page on the right, the one that supposedly details a darker doom for the MCU through Wanda's transformation into the Scarlet Witch.
The Darkhold page shows a crowned Scarlet Witch, and I believe it matches what Agatha Harkness read to Wanda
The page clearly depicts a crowned female figure, and it's very much implied to be the Scarlet Witch. The figure's body is positioned the way the Scarlet Witch was during Wanda's prophetic vision of her future self, which came when Hydra first exposed her to the Mind Stone in Loki's scepter.
What people don't want to talk about, though, is what sits behind that image. To me, it seemed to match exactly what Agatha was reading to Wanda in WandaVision: "Scarlet Witch is not born she is forged." Agatha also says the Scarlet Witch has no coven and no need for incantation. The most important part of that passage is that she is not born but forged, and that's what I believed the page was describing.
My reason for thinking so is the odd shape behind the figure. It's Metatron's Cube, a popular piece of sacred geometry.
Metatron's Cube and the sacred geometry behind the Scarlet Witch
Sacred geometry is the spiritual study of how the whole universe, from microscopic to galactic scales, seems to follow a secret law of physical shapes and patterns. For example, the spiral nature of sunflowers and nautilus mollusks imitates the golden ratio of Fibonacci. That ratio seems to form the cornerstone of many famous designs throughout history, like Da Vinci's Mona Lisa and the Pyramids of Giza. Even the human face imitates the golden ratio, which I find wild. In short, sacred geometry studies the source code shapes that make up the blueprint of all creation.
In Judaic texts, Metatron was an angel from heaven in charge of monitoring the flow of cosmic energies from the divine God into the mortal universe of man. The symbol of Metatron's Cube is the physical representation of the building blocks of the universe, the universe's Matrix code if you will. Given the Scarlet Witch's cosmic role as a reality altering being of potentially apocalyptic proportions, I thought the comparison was completely appropriate. The Scarlet Witch is essentially the MCU's Metatron.
The five Platonic solids and the Ether from Thor: The Dark World
Within the many lines of Metatron's Cube you can find all five fundamental shapes that, according to the tenets of sacred geometry, have been observed to make up our reality. They're known as the five Platonic solids, after the Greek philosopher Plato, who was also very interested in these patterns in nature. They are the star tetrahedron for fire, the hexahedron, which is a cube, for earth, the octahedron for air, the icosahedron for water, and most importantly here, the dodecahedron for the ether.
Plato regarded the ether as the element used for arranging the constellations of the whole heavens. It's also a symbol that appears in the pages of Asgard's own chronicles of the birth of creation, when Odin tells Thor the story of the dark chaos of the Ether in Thor: The Dark World. Malekith made a weapon out of that darkness, called the Ether. While the other relics often appear as stones, the Ether is fluid and constantly changing, and "it changes matter into Dark Matter."
That's why the Platonic solids of Metatron's Cube matter so much on this Darkhold page. Much as the Platonic solids represent core aspects of our reality in real life, the Scarlet Witch's Metatron's Cube in the Darkhold appears to represent the six Infinity energies of the MCU.
Six circles for six Infinity Stones on the Darkhold page
The key is the circles surrounding the cube's perimeter, because Metatron's Cube has a total of six circles. I read the page as telling us that one day the Scarlet Witch would be able to affect every single aspect of reality, like a living Infinity Gauntlet. Four of the circles surrounding the Scarlet Witch's torso seem to represent the Time, Power, Soul and Space singularities of the MCU.
I'm of the belief that the huge circle surrounding the Scarlet Witch's head, and therefore her mind, represents the Mind Stone singularity that lives inside Wanda after the tragic events of Avengers: Infinity War, when she had to kill Vision and absorbed the Infinity Stone's energies. The Scarlet Witch herself and her chaotic hair on the page represent the sixth, less predictable dark element of chaos. That chaotic hair design was even briefly seen in the Marvel Studios logo in the Multiverse of Madness trailer.
Taken together, the whole Darkhold page is meant to symbolize Wanda having the power to affect all of reality through a specific combination: red Reality Stone energies and yellow Mind Stone energies.
How the Mind Stone forged Wanda Maximoff, from Hydra to Age of Ultron
When Agatha says in the WandaVision finale that the Scarlet Witch is forged, I believe she's talking about how Wanda was slowly and secretly forged with the cosmic Infinity Stone energies of the MCU over time. It started when the Mind Stone made the sentient, independent decision to, as Agatha puts it, amplify the latent chaos magic that already lived inside Wanda, as we saw in the flashbacks of WandaVision episode 8. After that interaction, Wanda was granted full control of her chaos magic abilities.
That same sneaky, sentient Mind Stone would also create Ultron, for the express purpose of having Ultron create a physical body for the stone through the birth of Vision. That happened the moment Tony and Bruce stopped being greedy science nerds for two seconds. The Mind Stone seemed to be playing a cosmic game with the Avengers, and Thor picked up on it at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, noting it was the fourth Infinity Stone to show up in a few years: "Someone has been playing an intricate game."
This is crucial, because without Ultron creating Vision, Wanda would not have been forced into the next step of her forging. At the end of Infinity War she absorbed a huge amount of yellow Mind Stone energy. She was no longer only the queen of red chaos energy but also a manipulator of yellow Mind Stone energy, which gave her the vital ingredient to rewrite all of Westview on a molecular level and resurrect Vision, who was tucked away inside her. Vision is little more than the Mind Stone inside a vibranium housing, so when she absorbed that energy she saved him inside her body, and the Mind Stone became part of her.
My theory: if chaos magic erases matter, the Mind Stone may let Wanda redraw it
As far as I can see, the yellow Mind Stone singularity appears to be both a power source that keeps Vision running and an incredibly powerful singularity of atomic mastery. Vision can phase through and manipulate solid matter by manipulating electrons. That leads me to believe the Mind Stone is truly the Infinity singularity of all atoms, molecules and matter in the MCU.
That stands in direct contrast to Wanda's red chaos magic, which appears to turn regular matter, like Wanda's own hands in the WandaVision finale, into dark matter. That's what Odin described the red Reality Stone singularity doing in Thor: The Dark World, where it seeks out host bodies and draws strength from their life form. If chaos magic can turn matter into dark matter, it's a pencil eraser that erases matter. But once Wanda had the metaphorical pencil lead of the Mind Stone, her mind could draw reality as she saw fit at the stone's atomic level.
This would explain how Wanda was able to rewrite the molecular makeup of Westview, Monica Rambeau's clothes, and even Monica herself: she was using her Mind Stone magic to repurpose how matter is organized.
So the Scarlet Witch's entry in the Darkhold was telling us the true, frightening potential of Wanda Maximoff as a living nexus of Infinity Stone energy, especially after she was crowned by the cosmos at the end of WandaVision, just like an Infinity Gauntlet. That's what I believed this Darkhold page had been trying to tell us since WandaVision.
