Hugh Jackman's Wolverine Reportedly Sticking Around Even After Avengers Secret Wars, Plus Blade and Midnight Sons Updates
An insider report suggests Wolverine survives the MCU reset, and new details point to where Ghost Rider and Blade fit into the Midnight Sons.
It looks like Hugh Jackman's Wolverine really is going to stick around in the MCU until he's 90, just like they said in Deadpool and Wolverine. A new report says Hugh Jackman's Wolverine is basically going to be sticking around for a very long time even after Avengers Secret Wars, meaning after the reset of the MCU and after a new X-Men team arrives, his Wolverine is still going to be there.
The report comes from insider Daniel RPK, who says Marvel Studios reportedly has plans for Hugh Jackman to return in more MCU projects, plural, after Avengers Secret Wars. Right away, I think this is great, but I do think it comes with some problems. We are going to get a new X-Men team with new actors playing these characters, with completely new stories inspired by the comics but new to the MCU, which means a new Cyclops, a new Jean Grey, a new Professor X, and presumably a new Wolverine.
Why Marvel's X-Men Reset Could Give Us Two Wolverines at Once
If Hugh Jackman's Wolverine is sticking around, what does that mean for these new X-Men stories? I don't think it means Hugh Jackman is the Wolverine in something like an X-Men First Class style story where Jean and Scott come together before Logan enters the picture. I actually think we're going to go into a time where they have two Wolverines, and I think this is going to be done more than we might expect.
That is because we've heard recently that Tom Holland's Spider-Man is probably going to survive the reset. I would be shocked if he didn't, but also Chris Hemsworth as Thor is also said to be surviving the reset. At the same time, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has confirmed that characters like Iron Man and Captain America will be recast. So does Thor continue as just the main Thor? Does Hugh continue as the main Wolverine? Or do we suddenly have two of the same character existing at once?
Avengers Doomsday and Secret Wars Could Let Multiple Versions of the Same Hero Coexist
That is actually what Marvel Studios appears to be setting up in Avengers Doomsday and Avengers Secret Wars, building toward one universe in which more than one version of the same character can exist. A lot of us pretty much believe at this point that Avengers Doomsday will end with the destruction of the multiverse, leaving only Battleworld, created and ruled by God Emperor Doom. In the comics, Battleworld is formed from the remnants of around 40 different universes fused into one world, which means a lot of characters from different universes could suddenly coexist.
For example, we've heard recently that Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man could be in Avengers Doomsday. If that universe becomes part of Battleworld and carries forward after Secret Wars, that means Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man and Tom Holland's Spider-Man could exist in the new universe together, and if Andrew Garfield shows up, his Spider-Man could be there too. The same idea applies to Thor. We would obviously still have Chris Hemsworth as the main Thor, but a younger Thor from a fused universe could also survive the reset, existing alongside him.
I think this could be done really well. I actually think older Thor, Chris Hemsworth, could kind of take the role of Odin, since there needs to be an Odin, and there are some really mature stories they could tell with that version of the character, including finally doing Rune King Thor if Marvel wants to go that route, which they totally should.
James McAvoy Says No One Can Replace Hugh Jackman as Wolverine
I do expect there to be a new Wolverine eventually, but the issue is whether anyone could actually be a better Wolverine, or one as accepted as Hugh Jackman's, at this point. Hugh Jackman has played Wolverine for over 20 years, and even recently James McAvoy, who plays Professor X in the Fox X-Men films, said at New York Comic Con that no one can replace Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. McAvoy said, "when AI has taken over and playing all the roles and there are no actors anymore, he will still be playing Wolverine," adding that even AI will be like, "nah, he got it."
So is that reasoning behind Marvel's decision to keep Hugh Jackman on as Wolverine? Probably, and Hugh Jackman's probably just loving playing Wolverine again, sounds like he is. I'm sure he's going to team up with Deadpool and other characters as well. Ryan Reynolds has already said he's working on a mutant ensemble movie that's going to have a lot of people in it, and I'm assuming Hugh Jackman's Wolverine will probably be a part of that, possibly as a multiversal team if the story dives back into the multiverse after Secret Wars.
If not, they're probably going to just be off doing their own side stories, which would leave room for another main Wolverine to be part of something like an X-Men First Class, even though that's not technically when Wolverine is supposed to show up in that story. Marvel might even hold off on introducing a new Wolverine for a pretty long time. I think they might let Hugh Jackman kind of be the main Wolverine of the MCU for maybe five to ten years after Secret Wars. Would you like that, or would you rather see a new Wolverine sooner?
Ghost Rider Rumored as Midnight Sons Leader While Blade Remains in Development
With the reset comes new teams, and the Midnight Sons are going to be one of those. We've recently gotten updates that Ghost Rider is going to be a part of the Midnight Sons team, and we've heard that Blade is still on. Mia Goth said in an interview with Elle that she is still attached to the Blade film, saying it's for the best that it's taken the time that it has because they want to do it right. It sounds like Marvel just keeps pushing the project back because they can't get it right, having gone through a lot of different writers and directors, but Mahershala Ali is still attached, which is a good sign, and Mia Goth being still attached is another good sign that this movie eventually gets made, especially since Marvel wants Blade to be part of the Midnight Sons.
We've heard he might not actually be the leader of the team though, that Ghost Rider might be the leader instead. We don't know who's going to play Ghost Rider. A lot of names have been rumored, including Ryan Gosling and Norman Reedus. Keanu Reeves has also been mentioned, and I think that would be an absolutely fantastic role for him. It does look like Marvel Studios is waiting until after the reset to bring the Midnight Sons into the MCU properly, though we might see cameos from characters who could belong to that team in Secret Wars and Doomsday, since we've heard Ghost Rider is going to appear in Doomsday.
We don't know who that Ghost Rider will be. Reportedly it's not Nicolas Cage, which I think would be a waste since I believe he should be brought back. It could perhaps be a glimpse of the new Ghost Rider, and this cameo could go on to be the real Ghost Rider of the MCU after the reset. Either way, Marvel has plans for the Midnight Sons, waiting until after Avengers Secret Wars, with Ghost Rider apparently one of the leaders and Blade still part of it. I'd rather they push the Blade movie back again and again to make sure they make a good film instead of a mediocre or bad one, so I think this is the right move, and I'm excited for when it finally comes out and for the Midnight Sons overall.
What do you think Marvel should do with Wolverine and the Midnight Sons after the reset?
