How Avengers: Doomsday Could Reveal Doctor Doom's Backstory Through the Sentry and Reed Richards
A theory that the Russo brothers could reuse their Infinity War approach to Thanos, using the Void and the Fantastic Four to tell Victor Von Doom's origin
I think Marvel could reveal Doctor Doom's backstory in Avengers: Doomsday in a pretty clever way: the Sentry's Void could show us his childhood in Latveria, and Reed Richards could fill in the rest. In August 2025, coming off The Fantastic Four: First Steps and heading toward Avengers: Doomsday, Doom's backstory was one of the biggest things still shrouded in mystery.
Marvel spent a lot of money bringing Robert Downey Jr. back to play Victor Von Doom in the MCU, or so we were told. There was always a chance he could actually be a Tony Stark variant, but for now I am treating him as a Victor Von Doom variant from the multiverse. That was the issue at the time: we knew nothing about Doom or his backstory in the MCU.
The Russo Brothers Could Introduce Doom the Way They Introduced Thanos
The Russo brothers, who directed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, are back to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. They have already used a particular method of introducing a big bad villain when they brought in Thanos in Infinity War, and I believe they are pretty much going to use the same method to introduce Doom. "If it's not broken, don't fix it."
Infinity War is an amazing movie, and they nailed it, so I am all for them taking what worked there and using it for Doomsday. As I see it, the backstory comes in two different ways, and those two ways matter for the two different parts of Doom's story that they need to tell.
A Reynolds Family House Suggests Doom Seeks Out the Sentry
Pretty much since Thunderbolts came out, we had been hearing that the Sentry, Bob, would have a very important role in Avengers: Doomsday. That does not mean he would be one of the leads, but at some point he would serve a very important role in the plot. Thanks to an account that had been taking set photos and videos and gathering information from the set, we know there was a house on set named for the Sentry's mother, who in the comics is the mother of Robert, or Bob, Reynolds.
Why would we visit his mother's home? I believe it is all about Doom trying to use the Sentry. Doom knows he will have to go up against a bunch of superheroes to reach his goal. Based on what we had been hearing, that goal is to get to Loki, and he is going to use Franklin Richards for something, whether that is resurrecting the Scarlet Witch, which is a rumour we had heard, or using Franklin as the MCU's version of Molecule Man. We did not know. Either way, he would have to fight the Fantastic Four and whoever they align with, meaning the Avengers and the X-Men.
We had also been hearing that Doom would have his own kind of multiversal Avengers team with followers, and it looks like he seeks out the Sentry to join it. That makes sense: as Thunderbolts showed, the Sentry is incredibly powerful as long as he is in control and not the Void.
The Void Could Show Doom's Childhood in Latveria
I believe Doom is going to try to heal the Sentry of the Void, which could take us, at least in some flashback scenes, to his mother's home. This is where I think Doom, trying to rid Bob of the Void, comes into contact with it. As we saw in Thunderbolts, when you come into contact with the Void, it takes you to an extremely traumatic point in your life. That is where I think we get the first part of Doom's backstory, his story in Latveria. Some readers had already put the pieces together, suggesting the Void would be used to show Doom's past, which is exactly what I think will happen.
That first part covers his birth, his origin, his relationship with his parents, him learning sorcery from his mother's books, both of his parents dying, and Mephisto tricking his mother and taking her soul. In the comics, these are core moments that make Doom who he is. After his mother's soul is taken to the hell dimension, Doom tries to build a device to communicate with her, but it malfunctions and explodes, scarring his face. That is how he gets his scars and why he wears the mask.
This part matters because people need to know he is an incredibly powerful sorcerer. He learned through his mother, self study and other means, and his mother practised sorcery herself.
Reed Richards Could Explain Doom's Genius and Their College Rivalry
The second part is his genius and his tech. That comes from a lot of places, but the main moment they will need to show is his time in college in America, where he is roommates with Reed Richards. That is where his rivalry with Reed begins, which ultimately leads to his rivalry with the Fantastic Four.
In The Fantastic Four: First Steps, set in the 828 universe, there is a Latverian sign and flag shown twice when world leaders come together with the Future Foundation. It is empty, implying Doom is not there, but it severely hints that he is from that universe, especially with the post credits scene where Doom shows up at the Baxter Building. So I believe Doom is from the 828 universe, and I think it is actually necessary, because then Reed, Sue and the rest of the Fantastic Four can fill in the Avengers, the X-Men and the audience on that second part.
The Sentry and the Void would tell us about Doom's childhood and how he became a powerful sorcerer, and then flashbacks and Reed telling us what Victor was like in college would fill us in on his genius and their rivalry. He is not smarter than Reed, but he is still one of the smartest people in Marvel Comics history.
Doom's Technology Could Power Attacks on the X-Men and Earth
Knowing his genius is important, especially because it sounded like Doom would use his technology to attack the X-Men. From what we had heard, Doom goes to the X-Men universe and attacks the X-Mansion using Sentinels, so he most likely hacks into them.
We had also heard that while Doom heads for Loki and some of the Avengers go to the TVA to stop him, there is an attack on Earth at the same time. I believe this could be the team he has acquired who believe in what he is doing, but I also think it could be Doombots. That would be incredibly cool and would show how strong and smart Doom really is. He is also incredibly powerful as a sorcerer; in the comics he becomes Sorcerer Supreme at one point. To show how big a threat he is, you have to dive into his youth in Latveria and his college years with Reed, which eventually lead to him being kicked out, returning to Latveria and ruling over it.
Doom Himself Could Explain Why He Believes He Is the Hero
There is going to be a third part, and I think Doom himself will explain it: why he is doing what he is doing. In the comics, he believes he is out to save the multiverse, and that is actually true. He sets out to save it with Molecule Man after learning the Beyonders are going to destroy the entire multiverse. Whether that carries over, we will have to wait and see.
Insiders like Alex Perez from The Cosmic Circus had said that Doom believes he is the hero and not the villain. But Thanos believed the same thing, so we will have to see what his motives really are. In the comics, he ultimately realises he cannot save the multiverse, so he saves one thing, Battleworld, a combination of many universes, and makes himself its king and god. That, though, is where we get into Avengers: Secret Wars.
Why I Trust the Russos to Pull It Off
I wish we had a lot more time to introduce Doom, but we are where we are. We did have a buildup to Thanos in the Infinity Saga, but it was really in Infinity War that we learned all about him, through Gamora's experience, Wong and Doctor Strange explaining the Infinity Stones, and Bruce Banner describing his run in with Thanos. The Void could show us Doom as a kid, and Reed could serve the role Gamora and Bruce did, telling us what Doom was like as an adult and what he is seeking now.
I do trust the Russo brothers, because they gave us some of the best MCU projects: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame. "They could definitely do it again. and I believe and hope that they will."
Would you like it if the Russo brothers used this method to give us Doom's backstory in Avengers: Doomsday, or not?
