Avengers: Doomsday opening scene reportedly unites Deadpool, Wolverine and Maguire's Spider-Man
An insider report claimed the TVA rescues all three from a multiverse incursion, while leaked set photos showed Doctor Doom with a sword and Steve Rogers wielding Mjolnir
An early report claimed that Avengers: Doomsday opens with the worlds of Deadpool, Wolverine and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man starting to collide in a multiverse incursion, before the TVA steps in to save them. It's unconfirmed, so take it with a grain of salt, but I think it's an opening scene that would make a lot of sense, and it does seem like something Marvel Studios would do.
At the same time, leaked photos surfaced showing Doom, Steve Rogers and most of the confirmed cast. A separate report also claimed production would resume for a handful of characters who hadn't been confirmed and didn't have chairs, but who I believe are most likely going to be in the movie. I also have one addition of my own to the opening scene report, which I get to further down.
An insider report says the TVA rescues Deadpool, Wolverine and Maguire's Spider-Man at the start
The headline came from one outlet, but the report itself came from a recent insider. We can't confirm it. According to the report, the opening scene shows the worlds of Deadpool, Wolverine and Maguire's Spider-Man beginning to collide because of a multiverse incursion, and the ones who save them are the TVA.
I've been talking about this possibility for a while, and it's something I've discussed many times. It ties straight back to what was reportedly planned for Deadpool & Wolverine before that film took a different shape.
The setup echoes a reported early plan for Deadpool & Wolverine
Multiple insiders originally reported that the first plot for Deadpool & Wolverine had the pair working with the TVA while the multiverse collapsed. Worlds were going to start colliding and universes were going to start being destroyed. Using TVA tech, Deadpool and Wolverine would travel through the multiverse saving key figures, in the hope that they could all fight together, eventually defeat the threat, which we now know is Doctor Doom, and restore the multiverse.
That obviously didn't happen in Deadpool & Wolverine. But it looks like Marvel might have decided to save that plot for the Avengers film, because it's a good plot. I like it, and I think it makes a lot of sense, especially after Deadpool & Wolverine went into the importance of anchor beings.
There's also the fact that Deadpool's universe was dying, and by the end of Deadpool & Wolverine it had been restored. I think that has to come into play in some way at the end of Secret Wars, when they're trying to restore the multiverse. Anchor beings could be key there. What happens around anchor beings, and possibly the creation of new ones, will be an important factor in Secret Wars, I think.
Why I think the opening scene would also need to show Doctor Doom
Opening the movie with Deadpool, Wolverine and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man would be epic. My one addition is that I think the opening scene would have to include something about Doom. Their worlds collide, the TVA saves them, and then Maguire, Deadpool and Wolverine are asking how this is happening, why everything is collapsing and who can save them.
You could go two ways from there. One is that this Doom guy could save them, because he's going to portray himself as a hero in the beginning. The other is that Doom is the one causing the collapse of the multiverse, going around killing or trying to kill anchor beings and people who caused incursions.
There was a recent report that for maybe the first 40 to 50 percent of the movie, Doom acts like a hero who's on everyone's side. We'll have to see if that comes true, but it does check out based on some other things I've heard. Doom is clever, cunning and a genius. By Marvel's IQ rankings he isn't as smart as Reed Richards, but he's up there, and he has sorcery and tech as well. That's what makes him so dangerous. He's debatably the strongest, or maybe the most popular, villain in Marvel Comics ever, and I was excited to see Robert Downey Jr. play him.
I do think there will be a deceitfulness to him. He tries to act like a hero who's helping everybody, until he reveals that he's been going around trying to kill people who caused incursions. In that version, the only reason he got close to the Avengers was to reach somebody else who caused incursions, or to infiltrate them from the inside and get rid of them because they're standing in his way. I also hope this connects to Kang the Conqueror in some way. I hadn't heard anything about that in a while, but I do hope it happens.
Still, seeing Tobey Maguire and Hugh Jackman on screen together at the TVA would be a great way to start the movie. I'd want Doom shown before the logo rolls. In Infinity War, Thanos beat the Hulk badly and killed Loki, a big demonstration of his power. Here, the demonstration would be how much is at stake: the multiverse could be completely destroyed, which I do believe could happen, and the threat is Doom. I think they could make this work.
Leaked photos show Doom with a sword, a shield and a chess board
Two things stood out to me about Doom in the leaked photos. The first is that he has a sword and a shield, which I think is awesome. Combine that with a castle and the medieval armor we'd already seen, and that aesthetic is going to be very cool.
The second is that he's been seen looking over a chess board. An insider report claimed the Avengers, the Thunderbolts and the Fantastic Four are going to be chess pieces, with that board serving as his strategy board. I think that will be very cool as well, because Doom is very strategic.
Steve Rogers appears to wield Mjolnir in what looks like a Nomad style look
There were also plenty of pictures of Chris Evans returning, and he's wielding Mjolnir, which is cool. I wouldn't expect Captain America to have done anything in all this time that would make him unworthy of Mjolnir. It's Steve Rogers, even though he stayed back in time. Whether he had the right to do that, or whether he should have stayed and been a superhero because that was his duty and obligation, is a whole different debate. Despite all of that, he still seems worthy enough to wield it.
He's wearing all dark clothes: dark jeans, a dark shirt and a dark jacket, and he has longer hair. This looks like it's going to be a play on Nomad, which is something I'd been talking about for a while. There was supposed to be a Nomad show covering him returning the stones and the adventures around that. We never got it. Maybe this is Marvel Studios' way of working that storyline in, which makes sense, because we'll have to learn a lot about what happened with Steve Rogers after Avengers: Endgame.
That's what Avengers: Doomsday is set to show us. The Russo brothers had already said it's a direct sequel to Endgame, and that's one of the reasons Endgame was being re-released in theaters. Another reason would be trying to retake the number one spot from Avatar. I'm a Marvel fan, so I hoped they could do it. Then the Doomsday promotion could say it comes from the studio, the directors and the writer that brought you the number one movie in the world. I think that would be great marketing.
A report claimed Jean Grey, Storm, Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau were not yet in Doomsday
The next report is a really interesting one. According to one insider, as of then, Jean Grey, Storm, Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau, even though she's on the X-Men's Earth, were not in Avengers: Doomsday, but "the April re-shoots are specifically for actors they couldn't get during filming last year."
I understand this, because scheduling has to be so hard. Think about how difficult it must have been for Infinity War and Endgame, then this movie is bigger, and Secret Wars was going to be bigger still. For the most part these are big actors, like Halle Berry and Brie Larson. Getting everybody together at the same time, with names like Chris Hemsworth and Robert Downey Jr. involved, has to be a nightmare, so this makes sense to me.
None of the actors in this movie are small. They might not all be as gigantic as Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth or Robert Downey Jr., but they're all relatively big, which means busy schedules. I'd even heard one actor talk about fighting people in his scene without fighting another actor, using stand-ins or props instead. That could be for secrecy, but it could also have been because of scheduling. Thankfully, with the way CGI is now and the way Marvel Studios has handled things in the past, it can still be done incredibly well if they take the time, and they obviously are. Marvel knows this movie has to be fantastic.
Why I'd be shocked if Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau were left out, and why I want Jean Grey and Storm even more
It wouldn't make much sense for Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau to be missing from Avengers: Doomsday. Continuity wise, they have to be in it. The Marvels post-credits scene was a big setup for Doomsday, or for The Kang Dynasty at the time, but the result is the same: incursions are happening and universes are colliding. That scene showed Beast and Binary, and he mentioned Professor Xavier. That's probably the universe in the X-Men trailer for Doomsday that was playing in theaters at the time. It's not that their presence is required, but leaving them out would be a big continuity gap they'd have to explain. I would be absolutely shocked if they weren't in the movie.
If I'm being honest, though, I want Jean Grey and Storm in the movie more than Captain Marvel and Monica. I do like those characters, but I love Jean Grey and Storm from the original X-Men, played by Famke Janssen and Halle Berry, and I'm most excited about the X-Men. Something huge is clearly happening in that X-Men trailer. Cyclops is in the middle of rubble with a Sentinel in the background, and he takes off his visor and fires an optic blast. That could be a flashback to when Sentinels originally attacked and they lost some people. My fear is that if they can't get Famke Janssen and Halle Berry back to film, they might just say Jean and Storm died in that attack. I don't want that. I want them back on screen.
I want all four of these women, Jean Grey, Storm, Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau, to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, and I think they should.
