Avengers: Doomsday X-Men trailer leak: what Magneto says and what it means
Magneto speaks over a dusty X-Mansion, Cyclops unleashes an optic blast amid the ruins, and the Sentinel leaks start to add up.
The Avengers: Doomsday X-Men trailer leaked, and the leaks were 100% true. Some people saw it before it was taken down from everywhere I had seen it, but it is the real official trailer. It's amazing, and I'm more excited for Doomsday than I've ever been.
I've been waiting 25 years for this trailer. I didn't know it at the time, of course, but this is the moment the X-Men arrive in the MCU. In it, you hear a variation of the Avengers theme playing over shots of the X-Men. You are looking at Professor X, Magneto and Cyclops while that theme plays, and it truly is amazing. I think some things in it are a little different than we thought they were going to be.
Magneto's monologue builds to Cyclops' optic blast
Over the opening shots of Professor X, Magneto and the X-Mansion, Magneto gives a monologue. It runs all the way up to a Cyclops moment. He says: "death comes for us all. That's all I know for sure. The question isn't are you prepared to die. The question is who would you be when you close your eyes?"
What I find interesting is the timing. Right as he asks who you would be when you close your eyes, Cyclops takes his visor off and lets out a massive optic blast. Everything in the background is destroyed, and we can see what looks like a Sentinel leg.
The Sentinel set leaks now look right
That lines up with the Avengers: Doomsday set leaks that have been around for a while. An account that took many drone photos of the outdoor set had been reporting that the broken robot pieces we saw were Sentinels. The claim was that Sentinels would attack the X-Mansion, with Dr. Doom presumably controlling them through his sorcery.
If you're trying to show Doom's power, this is a good trailer to do it with, because it looks like Doom completely wipes out the X-Mansion. Looking at that shot of Cyclops, I think everything is destroyed, the entire X-Mansion. Cyclops stands in the rubble and fires his optic blast. I hope he destroys all the Sentinels that way. Either way, it looks like Doom comes in and wreaks a ton of havoc. It looks like pure chaos.
Why I think the X-Mansion is empty
Before that, the trailer shows the X-Mansion looking very old. Seemingly only two people are there, Professor Xavier and Magneto. The trailer is very somber. It shows the plaque reading Professor Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters, plus libraries and rooms that are beaten up and dusty. You can tell no one has been in it for a while, except maybe Professor X.
Even Professor X and Magneto look worn down. They aren't in their X-Men costumes. Magneto seems to be in a robe, his hair very long, and he almost looks like he's wearing Big Lebowski or fat Thor clothes. Professor X has an X symbol on a jacket, which matches a photo that leaked before.
I have a theory, and it's less somber than the trailer. What we heard before says Magneto has finally made his mutant utopia, his Genosha. So perhaps all the other mutants are there, and nobody goes to the school anymore. That might be for safety reasons, or they might simply be teaching over in Genosha. Who knows.
I think Professor X and Magneto are meeting there because they know something is about to go down. Maybe Professor X senses it through Cerebro, or maybe they have someone who can predict the future. We don't know. But with Magneto saying death comes for us all, they seemingly know something.
I don't think Cyclops dies
My guess is that the X-Mansion gets attacked, and the X-Men see it and come to help. I think Cyclops is one of them, and I don't think he dies. I pray Professor X doesn't die. I've seen it too many times, but maybe that's exactly why he will. I don't know.
Considering the destruction in that Cyclops shot, presumably aimed at a Sentinel, it looks like we'll probably get some deaths. I hope that, at least at the start, Professor X and Magneto survive and go on to be the main X-Men team in Avengers: Doomsday. I'm sure they and the other X-Men we see will suit up in classic costumes too. This attack is probably what pulls them into the fight.
Cyclops looks comic accurate
Based on what we see, Cyclops is in the perfect comic accurate costume. It's an all blue suit, with the strap across the chest, the X connecting it, and the strap running down. I love seeing James Marsden in this classic look.
I've heard he won't wear the trunks, which is always a topic of discussion with superheroes. There was the big Superman trunks debate, and I think they worked for Superman. From what we've heard, Cyclops won't have them, and I'm okay with that. I still think it would be cool. As long as he wears the belt, which we're hearing he will, I think we're good.
Each trailer teases a team facing Doom
I think I figured out what Marvel Studios is doing. Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel, said Doomsday would be about the Avengers, the Thunderbolts, the Fantastic Four, the Wakandans and the X-Men all going up against Dr. Doom. That's what these trailers tease.
The first was about Captain America, because he's returning and will most likely lead an Avengers team. The next was about Thor, who will most likely lead one as well. Then came the X-Men. The next one was said to be about the Fantastic Four and the Wakandans, as reported by Jeff Sneider, who reported that the third trailer would be the X-Men one and was right.
We've also heard rumblings that other characters will appear alongside them, which makes sense because Wakanda and the Fantastic Four should both be in the 616 universe. We've even heard we might get a glimpse of Loki.
Doom won't see himself as the villain
Marvel is showing almost all of these heroes struggling. Not Steve Rogers, but they're showing what he could lose: his child. The common denominator is Doom as the threat. Based on the leaks, Doom controls the Sentinels attacking the X-Men, Thor prays to Odin for help surviving Doom, and Doom basically seeks revenge against Steve Rogers and his universe. The whole multiverse is in jeopardy.
Doom won't view it that way. I think he'll say the heroes caused the incursions and that the multiverse is collapsing because of what they did, while he's trying to fix it. So Doom will think he's the hero. The Fantastic Four will see him as the villain for stealing the child, but he takes Franklin to help the universe because of Franklin's massive power.
I'm curious why he would attack the X-Mansion. Perhaps it has something to do with anchor beings. Perhaps he was after Professor X, or maybe Magneto. Eventually, they're all going to come together to fight Doom and ultimately lose, because we already know the multiverse is going to be destroyed, we're going to get Battleworld, and Doom's going to rule over it. That's what Secret Wars is.
The leaked copy is terrible quality, seemingly shot on someone's phone in a theater. Even so, this trailer is phenomenal, it has me more excited about Avengers: Doomsday than I've been in a long time, and I've got to see it on the big screen.
