Kevin Feige Calls Live Action Miles Morales the 'Destiny' of Spider-Man as Brand New Day's Final Trailer Arrives
Amy Pascal on cheering at the director's cut, Destin Daniel Cretton on the Punisher, and the new Hulk and Scorpion scenes in the last trailer before release
Kevin Feige has said Marvel absolutely has plans for a live action Miles Morales, and he called it the destiny of the live action Spider-Man movies for Miles to join at some point after the Spider-Verse series wraps up. That came alongside a final trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day with a handful of new scenes, plus fresh comments from producer Amy Pascal and director Destin Daniel Cretton. When I wrote this, the film was less than a week from release, and there was a lot to go through.
Why I thought Spider-Man: Brand New Day could top No Way Home and Spider-Man 2
I said it then: I thought this really could be the best Spider-Man movie we have ever gotten, over No Way Home and over Spider-Man 2. The way people were talking about it, the scenes we were seeing, the emotion, the hand to hand combat, the fighting and the practical swinging all made me think it had a real chance.
Brand New Day also still held the record for the most trailer views in 24 hours, even after the Avengers: Doomsday trailer came out. Avengers: Doomsday got 503 million views in its first 24 hours. Spider-Man: Brand New Day got 719 million. I believe Spider-Man is the most popular hero out there, and this kind of proved it. It also showed just how excited people were for this film.
Then there is what Amy Pascal, who produced Brand New Day and the previous Spider-Man films, said about the first cut. According to Pascal, the director's cut was so good that she and Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, stood up and cheered, something they had never done before. Her words were: "It was the first time that Kevin and I stood up after a director's cut and cheered. That's how good Destin Daniel Cretton is." It was great to hear that they loved the first version that much.
Destin Daniel Cretton says the Punisher is a warning sign for Peter Parker
People were worried about the Punisher, but he has a very specific role in this film. Cretton explained it directly: "The point of the Punisher being in this movie is to be a little bit of a warning sign for Spidey and that and the journey that he could go down if he's not careful."
I really like this, because it only takes a few moments, a few canon events in your life, to completely change who you are. Spider-Man has the power to go down the wrong path. That is why we were hearing so much about the responsibility and the burden placed on Spider-Man in this film. And it's Peter Parker: he makes the hard choice, which is the right choice for him.
It is interesting that they would put the Punisher in there to basically remind Peter that he has a responsibility, and that if he lets it go, he can go down a darker path. To be clear, I think the Punisher is great, and I don't think anyone is criticising him here. He is just obviously a much darker character than Spider-Man. That said, I expected this film to get pretty dark too.
Why I am almost certain Sadie Sink is playing Jean Grey
Cretton also said there is a very real reason not to tell people who Sadie Sink is playing. I think that very real reason is that she is going to play Jean Grey, and they want it to be a big surprise. Even though I am something like 99.999999 percent sure that she is, when they finally say it, it is going to be a huge moment.
The new poster made me laugh. You can see her in the bottom left, and she is completely hooded, with no face. They clearly don't want you to know anything about who Sadie Sink is going to be. She is barely in the trailers either, and in the scenes where we do see her, she has a mask pulled up and a hood on, so you only see her eyes. You don't see her hair, because that would be a pretty big giveaway.
The final trailer spent half its time on the Tom Holland trilogy
This trailer did not have a ton of new footage. Half of it showed what happened in the previous Spider-Man films, emphasising the things you need to know going into Brand New Day. This is not a film you can just pick up. I am sure it would still be a great movie if you hadn't seen the earlier ones, but you would be missing a lot of its heart without Homecoming, Far From Home and No Way Home.
The trailer runs through the essentials. Ned and Peter were best friends, Ned knew Peter was Spider-Man, and he was Peter's guy in the chair. Aunt May died, and before she did, she told him that with great power comes great responsibility. Everyone found out who Spider-Man was, and in No Way Home, Doctor Strange cast his spell to make everyone forget that Peter Parker was Spider-Man.
Before that, MJ and Peter were together and in love, and MJ made Peter promise to find her and tell her everything after the spell. The trailer shows Peter going up to MJ and deciding not to tell her, so he can keep her safe. He still has the note he wrote her in Brand New Day, and that is a big part of the story. He wrote her a whole note, and he says: "Maybe I'll show you one day, maybe not. Maybe that's my responsibility to live alone with the truth." Personally, I wanted him to tell her by the end of the film, though at the time I had no idea whether he would.
New scenes: an anti mutant voice, a mind controlled Scorpion and more Hulk
Once the recap is done, the trailer moves into what is new, though much of it we had seen before. It shows the character who, in the comics, is a pretty big anti mutant figure, warning that they are faced with a threat that can be anyone, and that they can't see it.
Then we finally see Scorpion saying, "You think I'm Scorpion." At first I didn't think it was him saying it, but now I think it is somebody controlling him. Mind control is obviously a big part of this movie; they had made that very clear. So I am going to think this could be Jean controlling him. My theory is that they will make us think Jean, Sadie Sink's character, is the villain throughout, and then in the final act reveal that she is not, and the two will work together. It could be her controlling him, or it could be a mysterious villain we don't know about yet.
The big one is more Hulk. We see Bruce Banner turning into the Hulk and saying, "No Banner, only Hulk." We see Spider-Man holding tech like what the Shocker was using before, really cool weapons for fighting the Hulk, while the Hulk grabs him and throws him. There is Spider-Man jumping on rubble as it falls, much like in the Spider-Man games, which Kevin Feige said they took inspiration from. The last new shot is a very brief look at the psychic freeze wave that I believe Jean releases.
At the time, we were less than a week away, sooner for anyone with Prime tickets. The film was billed for the 31st, but it was being released on the 30th, as they always do, and I planned to see it that Wednesday.
Kevin Feige says Marvel absolutely has plans for a live action Miles Morales
Feige revealed a lot about the future of Spider-Man. He pointed to a line in No Way Home: "There's a line in Spider-Man: No Way Home where Electro says, 'There's got to be a black Spider-Man somewhere out there.' Audiences around the world cheered because they knew it could be hinting at Miles." He praised Sony's Spider-Verse animated films and said Beyond the Spider-Verse would be coming out the following year.
Then came the key part: "But yes, we absolutely have plans for a live-action Miles. And I think it is the destiny of the live-action Spider-Man movies to have Miles join at some point after the Spider-Verse series wraps up." To me, that confirmed it. Beyond the Spider-Verse has to come out first, and then maybe in the next Spider-Man film after Brand New Day, they introduce Miles.
Feige also said they are always thinking and talking about more Spider-Man adventures regardless of agreements or contracts, which I loved to hear, and that Amy Pascal is already working on it. In his words, "we have discussed in depth what the next two, three, four, or five Spider-Man movies might look like."
I think they are bringing in Miles and he takes up the mantle. I hope Tom Holland always sticks around and can return again, much like Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield did, but I think eventually we do move on to Miles, because Tom Holland has already said he wants to pass the mantle to Miles and doesn't want to play Spider-Man forever. Either way, the future of Spider-Man looked great to me, with Marvel already planning ahead, and I came away believing Brand New Day could be the best Spider-Man movie and one of the best Marvel movies ever, with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars still to follow.
Do you think Peter should have told MJ the truth in Brand New Day, or was keeping it to himself the right call?
