Spider-Man 5 Is Already Being Worked On as Marvel Sets Up a Full X-Men Civil War
Spoilers for Spider-Man: Brand New Day follow, including new detail on what Jean Grey's actions mean for mutants across the MCU.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day set up a lot for the future of the MCU, and yes, this piece is diving straight into spoilers, so if you have not seen the film yet, this is your warning. Spider-Man did kind of screw the X-Men in this movie, and while there are earlier examples of power inhibitors, like when Wanda was locked up in the Raft with devices keeping her from using her powers, this is different. From what I am hearing, this was very intentional for the future of the X-Men, and if you know anything about their fight with humanity, it is pretty obvious where this is going. But first, the best news: Spider-Man 5 is already being worked on right now.
Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, says there are plans for Spider-Man 5, though he also says there are always plans, so there are a few caveats there. Tom Holland and Zendaya are going to take a good and restful victory lap, which they deserve. They have done a lot between them, with Brand New Day already on track to become one of the biggest movies of all time, having already broken records set by Avengers: Endgame. Zendaya is also in Dune, and both were in The Odyssey. It is not like a new Spider-Man movie was expected next year anyway, although that would be great.
Destin Daniel Cretton Has Reportedly Already Been Offered the Chance to Direct Spider-Man 5
Sony and Marvel have basically already offered the chance to direct again to Destin Daniel Cretton, who just directed Brand New Day, something I think a lot of people would really like. The only issue is that he is set to direct the live-action Naruto film, which might get in the way and make fans wait a little longer for the next Spider-Man movie. Marvel reportedly has plans for him elsewhere too.
When Cretton was asked in an interview if he would direct Spider-Man 5, his response was simply, "Sure." I honestly think he deserves a trilogy for the job he did with Brand New Day. He also still has to direct Shang-Chi 2 at some point, so he is going to be busy. It was also reportedly his idea to include Jean Grey in Brand New Day, and once Kevin Feige heard it, they built this whole plan for the X-Men in the MCU around that idea.
Jean Grey's Actions Will Reportedly Be Branded Terrorism by Anti-Mutant Politicians
Here is what is being reported from the insider known as Main Middleman about the impact Brand New Day will have on the MCU. According to that report, "Jean Grey's actions will have far-reaching consequences and will be considered terrorism by anti-mutants. Politicians will use the attack to speak out against mutants, giving a voice to anti-mutants." This is one of the biggest setups there possibly could be for what comes next.
That is reportedly where Professor X comes in, working with the government to argue there are good mutants out there, that the X-Men can help combat terrorism from non-mutants and mutants alike. That is also where Magneto comes in with his fight against humanity. The report continues that "the X-Men will be under humans' disapproval because anti-mutants will claim that the team includes a terrorist, even when they save the day."
We already know Jean Grey will be part of the new X-Men team, alongside Cyclops, with Beast reportedly cast and Emma Frost already cast as well. In Brand New Day, one man got hit by a car and it is unclear if he lived, and Jean shot out a huge psychic wave in the middle of New York, taking control of a lot of people, on a bigger scale than what Wanda did in Westview. People are going to look at the new hero team and recognize her as the girl who terrorized New York and froze them all in place. That is where Charles Xavier comes in to help her, alongside Peter and Aunt May, which I thought was really cool, setting her in a different direction.
The Brotherhood of Mutants Will Reportedly Spiral Out of Control as Magneto Targets Jean
The report says "the Brotherhood of Mutants will emerge from the debate over mutant pride, but will spiral out of control," and that "Magneto will use Jean's actions to influence Charles and try to win her over to his side." I expect nothing less from Magneto, who will likely point to how the DODC and Metzger tried to lock her up as proof that mutants are feared rather than accepted, while Charles pushes back that they need to show the world their good side.
It also states that "they intend to have established heroes torn between supporting and speaking out against mutants," and that "hatred towards mutants will also extend to heroes, and some will dislike mutants because of the reputation heroes now have." This sounds like a second Civil War, essentially a follow-up to the Sokovia Accords fight, with some heroes wanting mutants kept in check and Professor X trying to prove otherwise, all reportedly building toward an eventual Avengers versus X-Men storyline, which I think would be fantastic to see on screen.
Spider-Man Will Reportedly Be Blamed for the Mutant Cure and Become an Enemy to Most Mutants
According to the report, "they intend for Peter Parker to be a friend of the X-Men, but Magneto and his followers will hold Spider-Man responsible for the mutant cure. He will be considered an enemy by most mutants." That lines up with Spider-Man creating a universal inhibitor in Brand New Day that took Jean Grey's powers away, technology the DODC and anti-mutant forces could reportedly use to capture and neutralize mutants, especially since we already know the DODC will torture people until they die.
The report also states that "Metzger will return to work secretly with Bolivar Trask," which is something I predicted in an earlier review when people did not know where Metzger had gone. His research examining Jean and her sister's minds would reportedly feed into the creation of Sentinels. It also notes that dramatic, uncontrolled mutations across the MCU will fuel accidents, destruction, and human hatred, which is exactly where Professor X's school comes in, even though he can never guarantee every mutant will choose his side over Magneto's.
Most of the X-Men Cast Will Reportedly Appear in Secret Wars as the MCU's New Universe Forms
The report says most of the actors announced for the X-Men will appear in Secret Wars, with the ending establishing a new unified universe featuring mutants who will join the X-Men and play important roles going forward. That matches what has reportedly been said for a while, that by the end of Secret Wars, the X-Men, Avengers, and Fantastic Four are all folded into one new universe.
The report closes by saying "Ned Leeds remembers Peter because he is indeed a sorcerer, and his magical side will be explored in the future." I like this direction better than turning Ned into Hobgoblin. I understand why people like that idea, but if Ned actually remembers Peter, that makes it even harder for him to turn against him unless the writing does something very unexpected. I would rather see Norman Osborn and Harry bring the Green Goblin into this new universe instead.
Sony's CEO has also said the studio will stop making Spider-Man spin-offs to focus on Spider-Man itself, saying they do not know how audiences really feel about them. If future Spider-Man films are on the same level as Brand New Day, especially with Spider-Man now entangled in this X-Men story, I am completely on board with that.
How do you think Spider-Man being blamed for the mutant cure will play out once the X-Men actually form?
