The Cosmic Wonder Breaks Down the Rumored Plan for New Avengers Doomsday Trailers
Word online points to multiple teasers, an extended Reed Richards and Doom exchange, and a possible Sentinel battle sneak peek, though none of it is officially confirmed yet.
Marvel Studios still has more marketing moves planned for Avengers Doomsday, and from what I am hearing online, that includes at least one more trailer along with a batch of TV spots. As we get closer to release, Marvel typically leans on TV spots, though I am hoping we do not get too many this time since the marketing for this film really is shaping up differently.
We are hearing from multiple people online right now that Marvel Studios might release several Avengers Doomsday teasers, similar to what happened with Avatar Fire and Ash, which got four separate teaser trailers attached to it. This is a rumor, not officially confirmed, but it is worth noting Marvel has already done a version of this before.
Marvel May Split New Teasers Across Different Hero Teams, Mirroring the Avatar Fire and Ash Rollout
If Marvel goes down this road, I would assume different teaser slots focus on different teams, which I think would be a cool way to bring the multiversal angle of this film to casual audiences. Those of us following the news every day already understand the multiverse and all these different worlds colliding, but for people who are not as online, that context might need spelling out.
I would love to see the X-Men universe get its own spotlight showing they have fought incursions before, similar to what we already got a glimpse of with Professor X looking out a window and seeing a neighboring world get destroyed. That lines up with how incursions seem to work in the comics and now in the MCU: when two universes collide, the Earths at the center of each universe are what determines the outcome, and one Earth has to die to save its universe. The X-Men killed the other Earth to protect their own.
A Rumored Trailer Description Points to Extended Reed Richards and Dr. Doom Dialogue
Beyond the teaser strategy, there is a rumored description going around for what might show up in an upcoming TV spot or trailer, and a lot of it does seem to line up with leaks we have already seen. One detail is extended dialogue between Reed Richards and Dr. Doom, which matters a lot to me, not just for the trailer but for the film itself.
I understand why some people are uneasy about Doom arriving in the MCU so quickly without a long buildup. I share some of that worry myself, especially around his relationship with Reed Richards. The last trailer gave me a bit of comfort because Sue Storm talked about how well she knew Victor von Doom, even calling him the smartest guy in any room rather than Reed, though I am sure that will get addressed in the film.
Leaked concept art for Avengers: Secret Wars suggests Doom is still fairly petty in how he views Sue as his wife and Franklin as his son, which I am honestly enjoying. But Marvel still needs to dig into Doom's actual backstory with Reed: how they went to college together, how they became rivals, and how Doom built a machine that malfunctioned, then blamed Reed instead of taking accountability. Extended dialogue between the two of them at least suggests they are heading in that direction.
The Line "I Hope Someday You Will Forgive Me" May Be Saved for a Later Trailer or TV Spot
The rumored description has the extended Reed and Doom exchange ending the same way we have heard before, with someone asking, "Victor, why did you do this?" and Doom responding while looking at the sky, "I hope someday you will forgive me." We have actually heard this line before, apparently because it was expected to appear in the last trailer and did not.
It is possible whoever heard that line in some leak assumed it would land in the previous trailer, and instead it is being saved for a TV spot or the next trailer, or it might not make the final film at all. I do not think Doom is saying that to Reed, and I definitely do not think he is saying it to Steve Rogers, given the long-running rumor that Doom is after Steve's family to get back at him, possibly killing someone close to him.
That would be a very Doom thing to do, petty and revenge driven in exactly the way his character works. Worth remembering that whoever dies in this film could plausibly be brought back on Battle World, so any death might not be fully permanent, but we will have to see how that plays out.
Leaked Footage Reportedly Shows a Massive Sentinel Battle With X-Men, Avengers and the Fantastic Four
The rumored description also includes a close-up shot of the Sentinels blasting with Doom in the middle, followed by fight scenes including Cyclops on his knees without his visor in an extended shot. We already saw a quick glimpse of this in one of the first teasers attached to Avatar Fire and Ash, but this description points to a longer version of that same footage.
That whole sequence has basically already leaked, with Thor, Steve Rogers, the X-Men and Mister Fantastic all coming together in what looks like a giant circle, echoing the first Avengers film's New York battle but now with the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts added in. I have seen that leaked footage online, still without finished CGI, and it looks amazing.
The description also mentions Thor and Steve fighting back to back while Thor calls for Stormbreaker, which matches the leaked footage of Steve wielding Mjolnir the whole time while Thor has Stormbreaker. There are also hot toy leaks showing Thor holding both Mjolnir and Stormbreaker at once, busting through a Sentinel head, which fits this exact moment where Doom controls the Sentinels and Thor becomes one of the team's saving graces.
In that scene we reportedly see a lot of people simply running from the Sentinels. I am hoping Mister Fantastic gets to stretch even more than he did in Fantastic Four: First Steps, and that he can help out here too, though Thor and Cyclops as X-Men leader look like the heavy hitters. As much as I like Yelena Belova, I am not sure what she is meant to do against mutant hunting killing machines like these.
Chris Evans Praises Kevin Feige's Passion for Marvel Characters
At Fan Expo in Boston, Chris Evans spoke about returning as Steve Rogers and about Kevin Feige, and it made me feel good about where Avengers Doomsday is headed. On coming back to the role, Evans said he feels very at home with it and that he cares about the arc of all these characters, adding that Marvel "wouldn't be doing it unless there was going to be a really interesting situation to put him in."
He also spoke about Kevin Feige directly: "Kevin Feige is the furthest thing from a suit. He cares about these things the same way all of you do. And that's why these things have worked. That's why I feel so comfortable with him guiding the ship. He cares about these characters. He cares about you guys and that's comforting. You can't fake that."
I think that fan mindset, someone who has read the comics and knows the source material, is exactly what the franchise needed after the Multiverse Saga got complicated by Disney pushing so many additional shows on top of the film slate. That spread Feige thin and made keeping up with the MCU feel like homework for some fans, but it sounds like Marvel has owned that misstep and gotten back on track.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Reportedly Becomes the Highest-Grossing Film in US History
As part of that turnaround, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now reportedly the highest grossing film of all time in the US, though not globally. It has apparently passed Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which made 936 million dollars domestically, with Brand New Day now at 937 million. For comparison, Avengers: Endgame made 858 million domestically and Spider-Man: No Way Home made 815 million.
Big congratulations to Spider-Man, to Marvel, and to Sony given it is a joint production. That result shows people are still showing up for Marvel, and I believe that is because Feige is fully back in charge and doing things his way. I have no doubt he poured his heart into Doomsday and Secret Wars, and that these actors are coming back to do the same, though obviously the money matters too.
What do you think Marvel actually has planned for the next wave of Avengers Doomsday trailers?
