Is Marvel Studios Messing With Us? Why the X-Men and Spider-Man Leaks Kept Contradicting Each Other
Ahead of SDCC in July 2026, conflicting reports about Adam Driver, Sadie Sink and the Brand New Day post-credit scene looked very intentional, as if Marvel had big news to hide
Is Marvel Studios just messing with us? I think the answer is yes. In July 2026, the conflicting reports around Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the plot of Avengers: Doomsday and the X-Men casting looked very, very intentional to me, because I believed Marvel was about to drop some bombs and did not want us to know what it was about to do.
At the time, there was a lot coming from Marvel. San Diego Comic-Con was approaching, and it sounded like some really great things were on the way. Spider-Man was getting its own Hall H, and Marvel Studios also had a Hall H presentation covering Doomsday and what it described as the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To me that should have meant the X-Men, and hopefully the Midnight Sons and more of that kind of material. The X-Men were being cast, and Marvel clearly had a lot of plans.
Sadie Sink's hooded Brand New Day character looked like Jean Grey
A good example of Marvel hiding information is Sadie Sink's character in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. A recent look at the film showed somebody using psychic abilities, and Sadie Sink is in there. Marvel never showed that she has red hair in the trailers or in any of the TV spots. We had seen her a few times by then, and she was completely hooded and masked every time.
My read is that Marvel did not want you to have any type of information about this character. The second the studio showed that she has red hair, alongside all of those psychic abilities, people would guess she is Jean Grey, and Marvel did not want to reveal that in the trailers.
I do not think the studio was counting on people like us not knowing, because it seemed like most of us did know. A few were still in denial, which I totally get, and it was not 100% confirmed that she is Jean Grey. But as I put it then, "she's Jean Grey at this point." For the people who do not follow this closely, I thought it would be a really nice surprise to actually see it in theaters.
The Brand New Day post-credit scene drew several competing reports
Another good example was the very conflicting reporting about the post-credit scene for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. An earlier report pointed to Peter Parker possibly dying in the movie and then being resurrected with the symbiote in the post-credit scene. A more recent report claimed the scene would instead be a direct tie-in to Avengers: Doomsday, with Peter Parker not being on Earth. He would be in a different universe, on a different Earth, simply going into space, or just not there at all. Either way, Spider-Man would be leaving, and it would set up Doomsday.
There was also a report about Chris Evans showing up, which I said still very well could happen. That could be the post-credit scene, and it could be how Spider-Man leaves Earth, or at least our Earth.
Then came a newer report that the TVA, or very specifically Loki, is building a multiversal team. According to that report, the Spider-Men played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are already part of his team, and they would pick up Tom Holland's Spider-Man. I think that is really cool, and I bet it would melt everybody's minds if it appeared in the post-credit scene. None of these were confirmed, but all of them had been reported.
Adam Driver was reportedly cast as Magneto, then Mister Sinister, then William Stryker
The pattern was even clearer with the X-Men. The original report on Adam Driver said he was cast as Magneto. The next day he was reportedly cast as Mister Sinister. The day after that, he was reportedly cast as William Stryker. There is a reason we were hearing so many different things.
Multiple Man explained it this way: "There are so many casting rumors for a simple reason. Marvel Studios works hard to prevent leaks. Even reliable sources receive wrong, altered, or confusing information, which they pass on to insiders who end up spreading it, and thereby amplifying the rumors." Multiple Man added: "Until the official announcement, nobody is officially part of the X-Men cast, so don't trust anyone."
The way I see it, Marvel Studios is actively doing this. The studio tells people it suspects will leak information that Adam Driver is going to be Magneto in the new MCU. That reaches insiders, who present it to the public. Meanwhile, Marvel tells another person, or a whole group of people who might leak, that Adam Driver is Mister Sinister, and that gets out too. So it is not that insiders are spreading false information. It is coming from the studio to keep us guessing.
Why I thought Marvel had big X-Men news planned for SDCC
I thought Marvel was doing this because it had some major bombs to drop at SDCC, and we might have been getting a big X-Men announcement. Marvel Studios had released tweets and articles saying we would get a glimpse at the future of the MCU.
We already knew Doomsday was coming and Secret Wars was coming. So, as I saw it, the studio should have been talking about the projects that come after those.
Real Avengers: Doomsday leaks sit alongside planted ones
This also brings us to the Avengers: Doomsday plot. We had seen a lot of plot leaks, but as far as credible ones go, we had seen a few that had good backing behind them. For example, one of them came from somebody who leaked a very real plot leak for Avengers: Endgame. That gives it credibility. But did it come from Marvel's false information, or from an actual scene shot at Marvel Studios? That is the trick.
I would say a lot of the information that gets out is real, because people can see it. People see scenes being filmed, tell insiders, and then it leaks. That is how we can know about some of the casting news, some cameos and what happens in some scenes. Then there are the very real leaks, like the big Doomsday scene with the X-Men, some of the Fantastic Four and the Avengers about to fight the Sentinels with Doom.
At the same time, I think Marvel is putting its own fake leaks out there, and I think it is all just for us. I am not saying Marvel tricking us is a bad thing, and I am not calling the studio out. It is a good thing, because I love looking at leaks and talking about this stuff. I just think it will be really funny to go into theaters and find that everything we thought would happen is nothing like it. I had heard a lot of things I really, really liked about Doomsday, Brand New Day and the X-Men, but I know some people would be pretty relieved.
Margot Robbie, Sydney Sweeney and the X-Men casting rumour mill
I had heard some interesting X-Men casting rumours in the days before, and some made a lot of sense, like Margot Robbie as Mystique. I think she would do a great job in that role. There was also word that Sydney Sweeney was being eyed for Emma Frost, and talk of Patrick Schwarzenegger as Cyclops, one of a lot of names thrown around for that part.
Some of those names were probably accurate, and some were probably false information from Marvel Studios, so we had no idea what the studio was actually planning. The Russo brothers did say that the precautions against leaks for the movie were bigger than they had ever done, and that they were taking every precaution they possibly could to make sure nothing leaked.
The leaked Doctor Doom chess poster may have been intentional
The Russos did a decent job, I guess, but we still found a lot of leaks. There was word that we might be getting a poster for Avengers: Doomsday on the Monday after I wrote this, and we had already seen leaked photos of what that poster was said to be: Doctor Doom playing chess with Avengers pieces. That photo leaked along with something like 500 other photos.
So how did that get out? Was it intentional? I do also think Marvel intentionally leaks real things to get us excited, as part of the marketing. I know it sounds weird, but it gets people really talking about all of this.
Why I like Marvel's leak game
I do think there is a lot of truth in these reports and leaks, and that is why we talk about them. But sometimes Marvel is going to put out false information, and I have to admit I like the game. I like wondering what Marvel Studios has in store for us. It also explains why we were getting so many conflicting reports, specifically around the X-Men. I thought a lot of the leaks for Brand New Day and Doomsday had been pretty accurate so far, though some were not true, just as with anything.
For Endgame, we heard a lot of plot leaks. Many ended up not being true, but some were dead accurate, and some Professor Hulk scenes even leaked before the film came out. The studio does try to prevent leaks, but leaks always happen when you film a movie. Marvel's answer is to put false information out there so you do not know what is real, while the truth is still mixed in. I think that makes the conversation a lot more fun, and it gives us as a community a chance to talk about what we want, like and do not like in the upcoming movies.
Do you think Marvel should keep planting false leaks, or would you rather the studio did not?
