Kevin Feige Confirms No Marvel Movies Between Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars as Doom's Darkhold Is Revealed
New Comic-Con interviews, a Doctor Doom figure and a LEGO leak pointed to Doom's power, his emblems, Magneto's destruction and a Sentinel attack
Kevin Feige confirmed in an interview with Empire magazine that there will be no movies at all between Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. Alongside that, a new Doctor Doom figure revealed he has the Darkhold, and a LEGO leak showed off scenes I was honestly surprised Marvel let anyone see.
A lot of interviews happened with the cast, with Feige and with the Russo brothers, and between them they revealed a lot. Later in this piece I get into why I now think Doom's emblems are not what I first assumed, and what those LEGO sets appear to give away about Doom and the Avengers headquarters.
Kevin Feige says Marvel will release no movies between Doomsday and Secret Wars
This is something I know a lot of fans were going to be really excited about. Feige had kind of said it before, but it was nice to hear another confirmation. In an interview with Empire magazine that had recently come out, he stated: "We always try to focus on quality. But, when quantity is so much, you get spread thin. We didn't want to be spread thin, and the Avengers is as important as it comes."
What he was talking about is the fact that there are going to be no movies in between Doomsday and Secret Wars. He confirmed it. There may be some shows, something like Daredevil: Born Again season 3, but no movies are coming in between. Marvel does not want to be spread too thin and wants to just focus on the Avengers movies, which I think is absolutely the way you should do it.
Joe Russo calls Avengers: Doomsday Marvel's most ambitious movie ever made
Joe Russo said that Avengers: Doomsday is far and away Marvel's most ambitious movie ever made. Notice that he did not say it is the best. At that point the film was not completed. They were still editing, although they did already have cuts of it. Calling it the most ambitious means they are going to take some big swings, and that is something I really cannot wait to see.
Robert Downey Jr. also said he had recently seen a cut and called it absolutely fantastic. He added, "I think we may redeem ourselves yet," which I found kind of funny, because he was addressing the fact that a lot of fans do not think the Multiverse Saga held up to the Infinity Saga. I do think we got some great projects from the Multiverse Saga, but we also got some mid projects and some that many people do not think are very good. Secret Invasion is one I would point to.
Feige argues Thanos never really got a buildup either, but I think he is only partly right
Brandon Davis asked Feige why there has been no real buildup to Doom when there was so much buildup to Thanos. Feige's answer was interesting. He said the Thanos buildup has built up in people's heads over the years. Thanos sat on a chair at the end, pulled a gauntlet out and said he would do it himself, and he yelled at Ronan on a video screen briefly, and that was kind of it. Feige said that with Infinity War, Marvel treated it as really the introduction of Thanos to people, that the movie was built that way, and that this is what they are doing with Doctor Doom. I do remember the memes making fun of Thanos for just sitting on a chair.
I will say that is partially true. Specifically for Thanos, it is true: they introduced him and told his whole story in Infinity War, and we only saw him a couple of times throughout the Infinity Saga. But what was built up were the Infinity Stones, and all of the teams coming together to fight Thanos in Infinity War. That was the biggest thing. Maybe there was not much buildup for Thanos himself, and maybe we did not get much of his backstory until Infinity War, but so much else built up to that film. I think that is what people are missing or wanting for Doomsday.
Keep in mind, though, that the buildup for Doomsday is pretty much everything that has happened over the last 25 years. The original X-Men, Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, who has already returned, and Wolverine, who has already returned in Deadpool & Wolverine. There has been a lot building up to this, not just the Multiverse Saga, and that is something we have to keep in mind.
A new Doctor Doom figure confirms he has the Darkhold
The new look at Doom comes from, I believe, Hot Toys, and it is just insane. One thing it reveals is the Darkhold. Doctor Doom is confirmed to have it, and that explains a lot. In the trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, a lot of people noticed that when Doom blocked Stormbreaker with just two fingers, he had a rune on the back of his hand. That is probably a protection spell, much like we saw Wanda do in WandaVision.
There is a lot that comes with this. First of all, the suit looks amazing, with green magic on it, and by then we had gotten some really great looks at it. The Darkhold confirms that Doom is probably going to be even more powerful than we thought, and I do not think it is going to be the only thing he has.
I now think Doom's emblems are protection against Thor and Captain Marvel
What is really interesting is that we can now see the emblems on his suit even better, especially with the look shown on the floor at SDCC. What I have always kind of suspected is that they are Thor's hammer and the star of Captain Marvel. But I no longer believe what I thought before about them. I used to think he might have taken the powers of Thor and Captain Marvel and harnessed them into these emblems to enhance himself. I actually think it is kind of the opposite now. With Doom using specific runes, you have to wonder who he is planning on fighting, and whether he has prepared for Spider-Man or any of the others.
I think the emblems are actually protection against those heroes. What I believe Doom has been doing is traveling through the multiverse. I believe he has access to other universes, letting him look into them and into their pasts, probably through the library of worlds. We will have to wait and see if that comes true, but I do think he has been out there, and I think that is probably one of the big reasons he was not in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. He also knows about incursions. As for his family, what we have heard is that they die because he is building a machine to try and stop incursions from happening. That has been a big report from multiple insiders, and we will have to see if it is true, but it seems to be supported by the poster that was released and by what Sue Storm said in the leaked trailer that came from SDCC.
All of that points to him knowing about the multiverse, so it makes sense that he would look at everyone he is about to face with a certain plan in mind. It is Doom. He definitely has a plan. I do not see this being a story where he works with the Avengers and the X-Men for a while, fails to save things and then goes off to do his own thing. He is playing them all from the start. I think he probably looked into the universes and saw that Thor and Captain Marvel are the two strongest people, which is why I think these emblems are there to protect him against them.
If you look at the Avengers right now, there are not many who could probably do anything against Doctor Doom. I have seen so many memes of Thor coming back, looking at the current state of the Avengers and carrying the team himself. What is Yelena Belova going to do against Doom? What is Red Guardian going to do? I would say Thor, Captain Marvel, and Sentry if they let him out and he can do it without the Void, are probably the biggest threats, and then Magneto. All of them fighting together could work, but no one individual can really do anything against Doom apart from a very select few. Looking at the emblems again, one clearly looks like a hammer of some sort. The LEGO versions really show it, including a look at him on his throne, and the emblems are different: one is seemingly a hammer, the other a star.
A Magneto figurine matches a leaked unfinished scene of him seemingly destroying a universe
We also saw a Magneto figurine, our first look at him, and it is crazy because it matches a leaked photo of an unfinished scene from Avengers: Doomsday. The figurine looks amazing, but it also suggests this moment is going to happen, since the unfinished image shows Magneto seemingly destroying a universe. That could be Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man universe, or it could be a universe they do not really show us. Going back to July 21st, when those images were originally posted, his costume looks pretty much identical to what the figurine is wearing.
It looks like the scene is pretty much confirmed at this point. We had already heard Sir Ian McKellen say himself that he did a scene of himself destroying New Jersey. I think it might be New York, or maybe New York and New Jersey, or maybe the world in general, but it looks like this is what is happening, and the figurine kind of gave it away.
A Shang-Chi toy description calls him possibly the only hero powerful enough to stop Doom
The Shang-Chi toy description came out as well, and it is really interesting because it says he might be the only hero powerful enough to stop Doctor Doom. He is not the one person I would pick out to fight Doom. He does have the Ten Rings and some really good hand to hand combat, but Thor came at Doom with Stormbreaker and it did nothing.
Again, I think Doom's magic is what is preventing Thor from doing anything, and that might bring in Rune King Thor to stop him, which I would absolutely love. Shang-Chi physically might be able to go against him, but between the magic, his knowledge of the Darkhold, and the magic from his mother's books and whatever she taught him before she died, I just think Doom is going to be unstoppable. I think pretty much everybody believes at this point that he wins at the end.
The LEGO leak shows a Sentinel attack and Doom striking the Avengers headquarters
The LEGO leak is really awesome, and it is kind of crazy what it shows. There is the Sentinel attack scene, with Doctor Doom, Nightcrawler, Mystique and Mr. Fantastic. We can see the Sentinels, Thor jumping out at them with Stormbreaker, Mystique with some weapons, Magneto, and Cyclops in a ship.
Then there is the Avengers headquarters. It looks like Doom actually goes to the Avengers headquarters in Earth-616 and attacks, which would be a big scene. It is LEGO, and they were going to make Avengers Tower, but it really is set up as though this will indeed be a scene in Avengers: Doomsday. It makes sense that Doom would attack the Avengers at Avengers Tower, but it is really interesting that they would reveal all of this with every character included.
The Sentinels had only kind of been revealed before, in the Cyclops scene where he takes off his visor and fires his optic blast with Sentinels behind him. Apart from that and the trailer shown at SDCC but not released publicly, they had not been revealed. This set clearly shows them, and they look really good. Doom is going to be incredibly powerful, and now we know he is even stronger than we thought because he has the Darkhold. I would not be surprised if he has collected many artifacts throughout the universe, or if he wants the Ten Rings, or the bangles, though I do not know if they will work those into the story. We will have to wait and see.
Do you think Doom's emblems are there to protect him against Thor and Captain Marvel, or did he take their powers for himself?
