Avengers: Doomsday's CinemaCon Doom trailer: Thor's warning and Steve's return

Doom catching Stormbreaker, Steve Rogers on the Fantastic Four ship, and my theories on incursions, the X-Men and a new premium format

Marvel showed a Doom trailer at CinemaCon, not the full Avengers: Doomsday trailer

Marvel Studios showed an Avengers: Doomsday trailer at CinemaCon, and I call it an Avengers: Doomsday trailer rather than the Avengers: Doomsday trailer for a reason. What played was a Doom trailer, a very specific piece designed to tease Doctor Doom rather than the entire movie. Even so, what was shown totally does tease the entire movie.

Marvel Studios released teaser trailers for Steve Rogers, for Thor, for Wakanda and the Fantastic Four, and for the X-Men, and they designed the same type of trailer for Doctor Doom. Marvel had probably been sitting on this one for a long time, because when those earlier trailers came out, we heard other trailers were already rated and good to go.

Kevin Feige, the Russo brothers, Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans all came out on stage. The film was pitched there as taking place where Endgame left off while also going back to when it all started with the X-Men, which I really, really love.

Brandon Davis described Doom narrating and catching Stormbreaker with one hand

Brandon Davis was there, and he gave an official description. It opens on the sign for Xavier's school lying on the ground while a narrator says, "Something's coming. Something we may not be able to deter." Xavier sees flames come from the sky outside his window, looking genuinely scared. Davis wrote that Doom is presumably the one narrating, "slight accent and all," and we see him start to rise in another setting with his hood and mask on. So he's going to have an accent, which I think is necessary but also just super cool.

Next, the new Avengers Tower appears with the new A logo. The building is updated and has three spires, and the Fantastic Four meet Bucky, Ant-Man, Captain America and more inside. Thor then tells stories of his people dying and says this threat scares him more than anything before. He narrates the rest of the trailer, including this: "I have fought with many warriors in my time. They were far stronger than any of us combined and they died." He closes by warning that they're going to need a miracle.

Around that speech, Cyclops appears in a new shot, and Gambit fights Shang-Chi, both using their powers, in a fight Davis described as looking epic and like a dance. The Fantastic Four meet Wakandans in a desert created because water has been forced away, surrounding them like giant walls. Yelena marches past a concerned Reed Richards, then literally fights herself, and one Yelena turns out to be Mystique. While Thor's speech continues, he smashes Stormbreaker at Doctor Doom, who simply catches it with one hand.

Steve Rogers returns on the Fantastic Four ship and takes Thor's hammer

Then someone we don't see aboard the Fantastic Four ship says, "Hey pal." It's Steve Rogers, complete with long hair and a beard, and Thor is left in disbelief, saying, "It's not possible." Steve raises his hand, pulls the weapon from Thor and catches it with a grin. At the end, a voice that those who were there at least think is Doctor Doom says, "Before this day is done, we shall be faced with an unthinkable decision."

That is so much. I was freaking out, and I was still really freaking out about it afterward. There was some confusion over the weapon: some people said it was Stormbreaker, some said Mjolnir, and I heard Mjolnir more than Stormbreaker. I'm sure people in their excitement got confused, but either way, Thor and Steve reunite, and Steve can still wield Mjolnir at least and maybe even Stormbreaker. It also seems they meet on the Fantastic Four ship, which matches what we'd heard in the leaks.

Disney announced Infinity Vision, starting with Avengers: Endgame

Disney also announced a new format, a certification for premium large format theaters highlighting the biggest screens, laser projection and immersive audio. It's called Infinity Vision, and it's basically like a new IMAX mode. The launch was set to begin with the re-release of Avengers: Endgame, followed by Avengers: Doomsday.

So Marvel was never really worried about getting IMAX from Dune, because Dune took it all and they had this planned, right? Maybe they had it planned the entire time, maybe it was a retaliation, but either way they were getting a custom premium large format that they were basically pitching as just as good as, maybe even better than, IMAX. That's crazy, but that's what they were saying, and being able to see this in a premium format is awesome.

The opening line may point to incursions in the X-Men's universe

As for the opening line, a lot of people who were there seemed to think it was Professor X talking about the incursions, because other reports online said that. When Xavier looks out his window and sees those flames, he's actually seeing an incursion happen.

A big report that many insiders had made by that point is that the X-Men in their universe have already dealt with multiple incursions. They've reportedly figured out a way to essentially destroy the other Earths that are going to collide with theirs, saving their Earth and therefore their universe. In Marvel Comics, Earth is the focal point of an incursion, so if you destroy the other Earth, you destroy the other universe, and we've heard that's what the X-Men have actually been doing.

So the thing they may not be able to deter could be Doom, or it could be the destruction of the multiverse. As for the final line about an unthinkable decision, I think that's basically somebody saying they might have to destroy everything else out there to save themselves. Put yourself in that position and that's a big deal, trillions upon trillions of people if the entire multiverse gets destroyed. It also could be Doctor Doom and Doctor Strange deciding they have to destroy everything and build what they think is right, and that would be Battleworld.

The new Avengers Tower could mean Valentina's team joining the Avengers

What I think the new tower with three spires is, is Valentina Allegra de Fontaine funding the New Avengers, who come together with the actual Avengers team that has Sam and Ant-Man. They may clash heads a little bit, but they're coming together to deal with this new team, the Fantastic Four, arriving from the multiverse.

Keep in mind, Doom was supposed to be on that ship. Steve was supposed to be on that ship, and apparently Thor was supposed to be on it as well. That would be really cool to see.

Thor's fear shows how strong Doctor Doom has to be

Thor telling stories of his people dying, and saying this threat scares him more than anything before, is big. He's over a thousand years old, he's seen a lot, and he's fought with some incredibly powerful people. He's more afraid of Doom than anything. Then there's the scene where he tries to strike Doom with Stormbreaker and Doom literally blocks it with one hand. Imagine that: the god of thunder comes to strike you, and Doom just handles it.

That's exactly what this film needs. They have to show Doctor Doom is so strong that the god of thunder, one of the strongest characters in the MCU right now, can't really do anything to him. That's perfect, I think, in my personal opinion. Thor doesn't think they can win, and this could come after he goes up against Doom. Maybe he tries to solo him, a little overconfident, Doom defeats him very easily, and that's why he's so scared. I'd say that makes sense.

Loki also could possibly have reached out and warned Thor that what's coming is greater than anything he's ever seen. That could be another reason, but since they show Thor going up to Doom and Doom blocking Stormbreaker, that's probably what makes him so terrified. And if Thor can't kill him, he probably thinks the people around him can't either. When he talks about warriors far stronger than any of them combined, he's probably talking about Odin as well.

Think about who he's with at that moment: Bucky, Sam Wilson's Captain America, Wong, Yelena Belova, Red Guardian. They're not as strong as Thor, not even close. Some have super soldier powers, but the Thunderbolts couldn't defeat Sentry, and Doom's going to be worse. So Thor is essentially saying none of them can beat him, he can't beat him, this guy's going to kill them all, and they're going to need a miracle. I love that. It needs to be that intense and that serious.

Gambit versus Shang-Chi backs up the leaks

I love that Cyclops is seen in a new shot, and Gambit fighting Shang-Chi is absolutely amazing. We'd actually heard about that in a leak, so the scoopers were right about a Gambit versus Shang-Chi fight scene. That means some of the other fight scenes we'd heard about are probably true as well. We also knew Reed Richards was going to fight Nightcrawler, so a lot of the fights we'd heard about are probably true, which is really great.

The water walls around Wakanda's desert could be Namor's work, or Doom's

The detail about the Fantastic Four meeting the Wakandans in a desert surrounded by walls of water is a very interesting one. Somehow the water has risen and surrounds the desert. Maybe Namor and his people did that, maybe the Wakandans somehow managed it, or maybe Doctor Doom did, because Doom was reportedly going to act like he's an ally at first. This sounds like they figure out pretty quickly that he's not.

That's what I love. I don't want a friendly Doctor Doom for the entire movie. I want them to fight him a lot and lose a lot, and it sounds like that's going to happen. As for the desert, I read it as Namor's people and the Wakandans putting their differences aside to focus on the bigger threat, the destruction of the entire multiverse. Then of course Doctor Doom, though as far as they're concerned, they don't really know that yet.

Yelena fighting Mystique hints at the Avengers clashing with the X-Men

The scene where Yelena literally fights herself and one of her is revealed to be Mystique is awesome. The Avengers versus the X-Men is going to be big, and I'm super excited for it. Clearly, when the Avengers first get to the X-Men's universe, the X-Men are going to see them as threats, which is what I'd been saying this whole time. The X-Men have been dealing with incursions, so they know it's us or them, and when the Avengers show up, they'll think the Avengers are there to destroy their universe, and they'll fight.

My expectation was that Monica Rambeau, who is in that X-Men universe, as we saw at the end of The Marvels, would be the one to say hold on, those are her friends, and these X-Men are actually good guys. Let's not fight, let's talk. She'd be why they stop.

Steve's hammer moment closed a trailer that wasn't shown publicly

Then there's the ending: Steve says "Hey pal," Thor says "It's not possible," Steve reaches out, and the hammer leaves Thor's hand and comes to his. What a way to end this trailer. I didn't see it myself, and I was upset about that, but just reading the description made me so excited.

I do think it was kind of a slap in the face that it wasn't shown publicly, given it was specifically advertised as a Doom trailer. It seemed there would be a different full trailer that probably included these shots but was probably a little bit different, and I really hoped it would release soon.

Which moment from the Doom trailer description would you most want to see first?
