Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Finally Arrives, and It Does Exactly What a Teaser Should

Thor carries the narration, Doom stays half hidden, and the X-Mansion appears to be in ruins in Marvel's first official look

Marvel finally released the first official trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, and my verdict is simple: I loved it. "I thought it was fantastic," and honestly, "I think this is pretty peak."

I was hesitant, and I was doubting a little bit. Marvel had built a countdown, the Russo brothers posted a black screen with a ticking clock, and the Fantastic Four's Sunday 7 p.m. post was interrupted with Sue asking how long they had. Tickets for the special premium format screenings also went on sale that same day, and I think only in the United States. I had expected the trailer around San Diego Comic Con, although I had said before that dropping it beforehand would make sense, because Marvel could then bring the cast out and show exclusive footage there. My own guess right before it dropped was a teaser for the teaser.

The Doomsday trailer matched what CinemaCon saw

At 2 minutes and 25 seconds, it is a real trailer, and it appeared shot for shot to be what was shown at CinemaCon. Chris had been frustrated that Marvel kept it from the public back then. Asked whether it was worth the wait, he said: "worth the wait, sure. Did I need to wait? No."

For me it does exactly what a teaser trailer is supposed to do. It teases Doom without showing too much, and the clearest shots of him are still hard to make out. That is what I expected. I also think some things have been edited out, and Doom's absence from the Avengers headquarters scene could be one of them. People worried about the CGI should remember there is half a year to go, and I don't think it looks bad at all.

Thor is the heart of the Avengers: Doomsday trailer

It feels like Thor is the main character, which I really like. His monologue was really good, and Doom's voice at the start, with that varying accent, was very good too. Thor makes sense at the center, because out of everyone we've seen, nobody else can really go toe to toe with him, except maybe Sentry, though I don't think I saw Sentry.

We also noticed a Sentinel leg in one shot, which suggests the destroyed X-Mansion, with its statues, as Thor arrives. Other highlights for me were Gambit leaping from a tower beneath stained glass bearing the X-Men logo to fight Shang-Chi, Loki apparently at Steve's house, and Cyclops in a comic accurate suit.

The poster points to Doom's lost family

The poster shows Doom looking at a mural of a woman and child. I think it confirms what we had been hearing, that he had a wife and child. It doesn't look exactly like Sue and Franklin, but close enough. I wondered whether it was a prophecy, or simply a reminder in his castle of what he has lost.

Do you think Marvel deliberately hid Doom from parts of this trailer?
