VisionQuest surprised me in a great way: my spoiler free take after four episodes
A deep, serious and well connected continuation of the WandaVision story, with a standout cast and a mind full of what might be Tony Stark's AIs
I have seen VisionQuest, and it really surprised me in a great way. After four episodes, I think this is going to be kind of a grand slam for Marvel, really like a slam dunk for them, and I'll get into exactly why without any spoilers.
This show surprised me partly because it felt like it was announced a very long time ago, and we just kept waiting and waiting to hear something about it. We didn't hear about it for a long time, and then all of a sudden we got a release date, which didn't come until the very end. Before that, private trailers were being shown at conventions. Now it's finally here.
Four episodes in, VisionQuest picks up right where WandaVision left off
To be candid, I've only seen four episodes. The episodes are releasing in pairs, with one and two arriving together and three and four arriving together as well. I do my breakdowns right after I see each pair, so I don't know what's going to happen in the future. If I knew, I obviously couldn't theorize.
From what I've seen so far, if you are a WandaVision fan, you're going to love this. It picks up right where that story left off. Not necessarily in terms of time, but in terms of story, we're picking up right from WandaVision. White Vision is here, and I've got to say, I love this. I loved the episodes I saw.
If you like Vision, you're going to love it, because it's so great diving deeper into his character. If you like Wanda, you'll be very intrigued by where it's going, not just with VisionQuest but with the entire arc of Wanda and Vision's story.
VisionQuest is the third part of a story that now includes Tommy
Marvel has confirmed that WandaVision was the first part, Agatha All Along was the second part, and now we're in the third part. This isn't a spoiler, because Marvel has publicly revealed it, but Tommy is in this show. We already got Billy in Agatha All Along, Wanda and Vision's son, and now Tommy is here too.
The way the story is all coming together is very interesting and really exciting. So if you liked Agatha All Along, you will really love this.
The visuals and storytelling feel like a step above much of the Multiverse Saga
I feel like this is a step above a lot of what we have gotten in the Multiverse Saga from Marvel. I really do. Visually it looks amazing, and the story is just really good. I was never bored. I was always invested, and I was very intrigued.
It's also pretty serious. It has some great comedy, but it's serious, and it doesn't hold back with the fighting. I don't think it holds back with anything, but in the fight scenes people get killed, and it shows people getting killed. I shouldn't say it's super mature, but it's definitely PG-13. Vision does not hold back, some other characters do not hold back, and the dynamic between them all is really, really good.
The show mixes the real MCU with the inside of Vision's head
Basically, the show takes place both in the real world of the MCU and inside Vision's head, and they do a really great job of mixing those together. You'll see what I mean when you see it. It's really clever, and I really appreciate how it's done.
Inside his mind you have a lot of AIs, which I think all come from Tony Stark, including JARVIS, EDITH, FRIDAY and, the big one, Ultron. It's really cool to see them all interact. Vision is like a computer, so they're all processing things, basically making Vision function and communicating with him about a lot. Everyone has their part, but they all have individual personalities as well. I don't want to give away too much, but it's really cool to see how it all comes together.
The cast delivers, and Paul Bettany is an amazing actor
I've got to give it up for the cast, because the acting is on par for everyone. Paul Bettany is an amazing actor. I've loved his work for a very long time, and I think Vision has definitely become one of my favorite characters, especially after this, I would say.
The entire cast delivers. It's serious, and it is very deep. I'm not going to lie, there were some parts where I got a little teary eyed, and I was surprised that I did. That's the best way I can put it: I didn't expect something like this to hit me so hard. Part of that is the weird blend of them being AI while also having feelings, which is kind of the whole thing.
Vision wrestles with the Ship of Theseus
This Vision is the original body of Vision, put back together, as we know from WandaVision. He didn't have any of Vision's memories until the construct of Vision that Wanda created told him, "No, but you are vision. Here, let me give you your memories." He unlocked them, and now this Vision has all those memories and is basically trying to figure out how to feel.
It goes deep into the Ship of Theseus, which was talked about at the very end of WandaVision. To put it as plainly as possible, there's a ship in a museum, and the wooden planks it's made of are rotting, so they start replacing them with new ones. Once the ship has no original wood left, is it still the Ship of Theseus? And if you take all the rotting wood and build a ship out of that, is that the Ship of Theseus? The answer is generally agreed to be that neither is the true ship, but both are.
That's kind of what Vision is dealing with. He has the real body and he has the memories, but he didn't have the experience. So who is the real Vision: the other one, the Avengers Vision, or him?
Ultron has another side now
The show also gets pretty deep into the other AIs and Ultron. It's really cool to see him, because his mind has kind of changed too. Being inside Vision's mind and seeing more of humanity, his mind isn't just that everyone deserves to die anymore. It still kind of is that, don't get me wrong, but there's another side of him now.
James Spader crushes it. Of course he does, it's James Spader. There's a difference I want to draw here: the cast is amazing because they deliver with their performances, but the characters are really good as well. The way they bring these AIs to life is really cool, and there's a cool detail about why they look the way they look.
It feels like a connected MCU story again
Overall, the vibe and the feel of it make it a really good watch. I think that's big, because I've seen some Marvel and DC shows, and some others, recently where I haven't felt that, where I just wasn't too invested or too excited. This one, I think, delivers pretty much everywhere it needs to.
It does a great job of being connected to the overall MCU. There are Easter eggs and name drops, even in the opening credits, and there's talk of Endgame and things like Thanos. You feel the MCU in this project, and sometimes we miss that feeling. I'm not saying we always need it, but it is a connected universe, and it's really cool when we have all those connections.
My guess is that it's all leading to Wanda
I'm super intrigued to see where it goes and how it ends, and to see how it goes into Avengers: Doomsday, or if it does, and how it goes into Avengers: Secret Wars, if it does. This is just me guessing at this point, but we have Billy in the MCU, we now have a Vision again with the same body and the memories, and we're getting Tommy, whose character is awesome as well. That's the entire WandaVision family here. All that's left is Wanda, so you just have to imagine it's leading to her.
It really feels like a continuation of Vision's story from WandaVision and a continuation of the MCU that I honestly really loved. I didn't really think anything negative of it. I thought it was amazing. If you like Vision as a character, or if you liked WandaVision, I think you're going to like this a lot.
Are you excited to see VisionQuest, and are you going to give it a try?
