Avengers: Doomsday Reportedly Won't Explain Why Doctor Doom Looks Like Tony Stark, but His Mysterious Book May Be the Key to Battleworld
A new report says the book Doom holds is the Word of God, a reality altering artifact that could explain the ending of Avengers: Doomsday and how Doom travels the multiverse.
We have some new details for Avengers: Doomsday. Reportedly, the movie will not explain why Doctor Doom looks like Tony Stark, and the book Doom carries may not be the Darkhold at all but a reality altering artifact called the Word of God. I don't think too many people are going to be super excited about the first detail, but the second makes so much sense for Doom, both for how Avengers: Doomsday ends and for how the story carries through Secret Wars.
Avengers: Doomsday reportedly won't explain why Doctor Doom looks like Tony Stark
This is the one I think some people might be a little upset about. According to the Cosmic Circus, there will be no explanation in Avengers: Doomsday as to why Doctor Doom looks like Tony Stark. I want to be specific here: that is in Avengers: Doomsday. We have heard this in the past as well from people like John Campea, who has said Doom never takes his mask off in the movie, at least not where other people can see that he looks like Tony Stark.
He might take the mask off in front of the Fantastic Four, but they have no idea who Tony Stark is. There is no Tony Stark in the 828 universe, the Fantastic Four's universe, so taking his mask off in front of them doesn't really matter. At the same time, if he is already scarred, I doubt he would take his mask off in front of Reed Richards unless he is trying to prove a point, essentially showing him what happened to him while trying to prevent the destruction of the multiverse and asking for help.
Doom's origin may stay mostly true to the comics, with one possible change
According to some other reports we have heard, Marvel is going to stay mostly true to Doctor Doom's origin, which I'm really excited for. I do think they are going to mix up how he got the scars a little bit. We have been hearing that he tries to create a multiversal device that stops incursions from happening. That might be the case, and that device might explode, scar him and kill his family. That might be one of the few changes they make to Doom's origin story.
From what we have heard, Robert Downey Jr. will remain in costume for most of the movie, and the parts where he is not in costume will be private: Doom inside his ship, on his throne, or in his castle in Doomstadt, alone with nobody else seeing him. Perhaps the witches could see him, but that would probably mean some of them would recognise that he looks like Tony Stark. Doctor Strange, who is one of his witches, would realise it and react with something like "Oh my gosh, you're a Tony Stark variant."
So it doesn't seem like we are getting that in the movie, which means no explanation as to why he specifically looks like Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man. The Russo brothers have said there is a specific reason they are doing this. We just might have to wait until Avengers: Secret Wars to find out.
The book on Doom's Hot Toys figure may be the Word of God, not the Darkhold
This is something I actually got wrong previously. Recently we got some great looks at Doctor Doom via a Hot Toys figure. Hot Toys partners with Marvel, and these are the exact costumes from the movie. In one of them he is holding a book, and I thought it was the Darkhold. I have seen the pushback that the Darkhold was destroyed in every universe, and I get that, but we are talking about Doctor Doom here. He has a coven of witches. We have seen the art of the witches and the actual costumes at Comic-Con, so we know that is confirmed. With a coven of witches and magic users following him, anything is really possible.
Yes, I know the Scarlet Witch got rid of the Darkhold and it should be gone in every universe, but maybe there was one sitting outside of the multiverse and Doom had it. However, the new report takes this in a different direction: the book is reportedly the Word of God. It is something we have talked about very briefly when it comes to Avengers: Doomsday, but I think it is going to be much more important than a lot of us realise. It is a magical artifact, and it is supposedly one of the sources of Doctor Doom's true powers in the movie.
What the Word of God actually does
If you know what it does, it makes a ton of sense. The Word of God is basically an interdimensional artifact created by an extradimensional engineer, who used it to travel between dimensions and absorb the power from those dimensions. It is incredibly powerful. At one point the book got lost and was found on Earth, and people thought its power was so magical and so divine that they simply called it the Word of God. It is not actually the word of any god of the Marvel Universe; that is just what people started calling it because of its powers.
Those powers are pretty insane. If you speak the symbols in the book, you have the power to bend, create, destroy and basically alter reality in any way you choose. "It's very Scarlet Witch-esque," which is kind of cool for a whole different reason.
The Scarlet Witch might not be one of Doom's witches
That reason is that maybe the Scarlet Witch actually isn't one of Doom's followers. We have been hearing about a possible scene after the credits of Avengers: Doomsday, following the reshoots, in which the Scarlet Witch could possibly show up with her own group of people, being good. That might mean she isn't one of Doom's witches. That hasn't been confirmed. There have been rumours that she is one of the followers, and I do think it makes sense for her to be one, but I think it would be really cool if she wasn't.
I think Doctor Strange is a given. I think Clea is a given. We might have Sylvie there. Death could be one of them, and Agatha could be one of them. We'll have to wait and see. The Scarlet Witch very well could be one of them, but I think it would be pretty cool if she was good, and if the Scarlet Witch style powers Doom is said to have actually come from the Word of God instead of her.
The Word of God could be the MCU's twist on the Beyonders
If we think about this in terms of the finale and Doom creating a new reality exactly as he wants it, this makes a lot of sense, considering he probably isn't going to any Beyonders or the Beyonder in this movie. This is the MCU, not the comics, and they change things. They might say the Beyonder or the Beyonders made this book. Since the book absorbs powers from different dimensions, Doom getting the book would be like a little twist on him getting the Beyonders' powers.
I know some people are going to say they don't like that. But again, I don't think they are introducing the Beyonder or the Beyonders in this film, so this is just twisting it for the MCU. I think it's clever, because if you are not going to have the Beyonder, you can still get their powers into the MCU, and you also get a really cool artifact.
Doom reportedly hands the book to Doctor Strange to create Battleworld
At the very end, when Doctor Doom creates Battleworld and basically changes all of reality, he does it via this book. In fact, we have heard a report that at the end, while Doom is fighting, he simply gives the book to Doctor Strange and says, "Do this spell." As Strange performs the spell and Doom fights, the heroes are essentially too late. Strange completes the spell, and as the multiverses collide and everything is destroyed, Doom puts them all together and makes reality what he wants: Battleworld, a world he rules.
This would also explain how he makes everybody forget the past, because he is altering reality for everybody inside what is left of the multiverse at the end. And the book does also affect the person who uses it, so maybe that is why Doom has Doctor Strange do the spell at the end of Avengers: Doomsday. We'll have to wait and see.
How Doom travels between universes: the Word of God or a place outside space and time
This would also explain how Doom could jump between universes or go outside of them. Originally, I thought he would probably have access to a place that exists outside of space and time, one the Beyonders created at one point and then abandoned. He still could very well go there. In fact, he might go there and find the Word of God there. I still think that is possible, but the Word of God could solve the question people have been asking about how Doom gets the ability to travel to different universes and outside the multiverse. That place outside of space and time could explain that as well.
So this is pretty big, and I think this is what he is holding on the Hot Toys figure. I really do think it looks more like the Darkhold, but the Word of God makes more sense, especially if Marvel sticks to what they showed us in Multiverse of Madness, with the Scarlet Witch destroying the Darkhold everywhere.
The Scarlet Witch could be key to awakening everyone in Secret Wars
If the Scarlet Witch is not on Doom's side and he is using reality warping powers from the book rather than hers, her powers would be one of the biggest things to fight against Doom in Avengers: Secret Wars for Battleworld. I have said plenty of times that the Scarlet Witch is going to be a key character for Secret Wars as far as awakening people goes.
If Doom gets his way and shapes reality, and most of the Avengers, X-Men and Fantastic Four don't remember anything, including their relationships with each other, the Scarlet Witch could be the one to awaken that in everybody she comes in contact with. Or maybe she does a giant spell that affects the entire world, so people remember the past, but now we are in one combined universe, and that is our new MCU. Whatever direction they choose, I think it is going to work out pretty well in the end, and this could be a pretty cool twist on the Beyonders if they say the Beyonders made that book.
Are you okay waiting until Avengers: Secret Wars to learn why Doctor Doom looks like Tony Stark, or were you really hoping Doomsday would answer it?
