Marvel's SDCC Hall H: Ryan Gosling's Ghost Rider, a New Black Panther and Doom's Amazing Doomsday Lines
Marvel's Hall H panel brought Avengers: Doomsday scenes shown only in the room, a Doom poster, Endgame Encore, Ghost Rider, VisionQuest and Black Panther 3 news
Marvel Studios held its Hall H panel at SDCC and announced several projects for the next chapter of the MCU, including Ghost Rider with Ryan Gosling and a new Black Panther. But first, I know everyone wants to know about the reel of new Avengers: Doomsday scenes that was shown to the Hall H audience but not released to the public.
At the time of the panel, I kept checking to see whether Marvel would put it out. It looked like that material might become the next trailer. I did see a tiny bit of it, and it confirms that a leak that surfaced a while ago was real.
The Avengers: Doomsday reel confirms the leaked Sentinels clip was real
A while back, a clip leaked showing the X-Men and the Avengers fighting the Sentinels after Doom raises them up. Based on some of what was shown in Hall H, that leak was real. It had been enhanced with AI, but the underlying scene was genuine.
The reel also carried a lot of new dialogue that sounds truly amazing. It opens on Doctor Doom sitting on a throne, with the floor glowing green beneath him. Then Sue Storm's voice comes in. I heard it, and it sounds amazing. She is speaking to everyone gathered: the Avengers, the X-Men, the New Avengers.
Sue Storm explains how Victor von Doom was broken
Sue's first line is "Victor was always the smartest guy in every room." Saying that right in front of her husband, Reed Richards, is quite something. She goes on to say that Victor used to be different, that he used to be kind and caring, but then everything he loved was taken from him. She says she knew he was lost, but did not realise he was broken.
As Sue talks about his loss, we see the painting of a mother and child from the Avengers: Doomsday poster. As I mentioned when that poster arrived with the trailer, it seems to be a dedication to his former wife and child. They died, and beneath them sits a cracked world.
So much of what we have been hearing about Avengers: Doomsday now seems to be real: that Steve Rogers causes an incursion, and that the incursion leads to the death of Doom's family. That would also explain why Doom hates Steve. Doom wants revenge, and that is essentially what the characters talk about in this reel.
Thor's threat, and Doom's reply: "Hell answers to me"
Reed asks, "Victor, did you do this?" Doom stands among the wreckage and says, "All of you have lived stolen lives. Now you must give them back." Reed presses him again to answer. Doom then leaps from a building, floating down fast with his cape blowing behind him, and it is described as terrifying.
Thor then says, "I swear you will beg for hell long before I grant it." We also see Thor's daughter, Love, which implies Doom may have threatened her, or even taken her. I think this might be a bit of a misdirect, though. I think Doom might have killed Loki, and that is why Thor says it. Still, it very well could be about Love. She appeared in the Thor teaser, and we know she goes back to Earth with Thor. At one point we thought Doom was collecting kids because of their powers, and she has a little of Eternity's powers, so that might be the case.
Then Doom commands the X-Men's Sentinels, raising them from the wreckage, and answers Thor with "Hell answers to me." Awesome line. Amazing line. It is a shame Marvel did not release it, because we need to see that. We knew something else was coming, because we had heard about leaks of new material, but it was unfortunate the public did not get it.
Steve Rogers' incursion and the loss of Doom's family
When Doom tells everyone they have lived stolen lives, I think he is talking about some of the Avengers and other heroes who have caused incursions. We know Steve causes one by staying back in time, which is not supposed to happen. Loki shows up, gives him the card we see in the first trailer as a way to contact him, and then moves him to the Fantastic Four universe. That causes an incursion, and because of it, Doom's family dies.
We have also heard that Doom might be building a machine to try to stop the incursion, and that it explodes, scars him and kills his family. Either way, we now know Doom's family dies. He seems to have been good friends with the Fantastic Four. Sue says he was the smartest guy in the room, that he was sweet, kind and caring, and that everything he loved was taken from him. And then we get Doctor Doom. I like it. I think it is a good story.
When asked on stage, Pedro Pascal said, "Reed and Doom are besties." So maybe at one point they were. Or maybe Sue and Doom were the close friends while Reed and Doom had the rivalry, which is what I really hope we get.
Most of the Avengers: Doomsday cast was on stage, but no Spider-Man
A lot of the cast was on stage, with only a few missing, such as Chris Hemsworth and Alan Cumming. Beyond that, the X-Men and the Avengers were largely there, along with Doctor Doom, the Russo Brothers and Kevin Feige, who was really great to see.
There was no Spider-Man whatsoever. No Tobey Maguire, no Tom Holland and no Andrew Garfield. Marvel showed material from the film, but nothing really about Spider-Man's place in Doomsday.
Doom's solo poster and the emblems that may not be Mjolnir or Captain Marvel's star
Marvel also showed a new Avengers: Doomsday poster featuring just Doom, and I think it looks awesome. The design of Doom is truly great. I think it looks fantastic.
I did notice something about the emblems he wears. Based on concept art that came out earlier, I originally thought they could be the Captain Marvel symbol and Thor's hammer, Mjolnir. On this poster, they do not appear to be. One kind of looks like Mjolnir but seems to have lines running down each side, and the other no longer seems to be the Captain Marvel star. It still could be, but I am having my doubts now.
There does seem to be a tiny red spark glowing from one of the emblems. It is very faint, but you can kind of see it. That might be some indication of the Scarlet Witch. We will have to wait and see, but there was news on her too, which I get to below.
Endgame Encore adds new Steve Rogers scenes and Hayley Atwell returns
Marvel also showed Avengers: Endgame material under the name Avengers: Endgame Encore, although the poster just says Endgame Encore. It includes new scenes. From what we have heard, it is about seven minutes of new material, and it shows Steve Rogers returning the Stones, something we have wanted to see. Maybe we will even see Steve talking to Red Skull again. Who knows, but it is going to be really cool to see.
Marvel also confirmed that Hayley Atwell returns in the film. She was there on stage, and the cast took a really epic selfie that I really like. It was so cool to see everybody up there. They originally came out on different stages all across Hall H and then assembled together on one stage. It was really creative.
Deadpool's Hall H bit hints he could turn up in Avengers: Doomsday
Then Deadpool came out, wearing what looked like a greyish blue suit rather than his normal one, and did a whole bit asking questions. He asked Paul Rudd, and I am not sure why Paul Rudd specifically, "Why is Thor crying?" Paul Rudd made a funny joke about being a Wrexham fan, since Deadpool and Ryan Reynolds are the same person to me, and Ryan Reynolds owns part of that team. Fans really want to know why Thor was crying, which makes me believe they are going to put that in the film.
Deadpool then asked when the film starts filming. It is a weird way to announce a movie, and announce is the key word. Deadpool acted as if they were only just announcing it and asked when they would film, because he wanted to be in it. Robert Downey Jr. replied, in effect, that they had already shot it and he should take a look around.
Ryan then said he could see there was no additional shooting, no last minute additions, basically saying he is not in the movie because he did not shoot anything. I think this was their subtle way of teasing that Deadpool will be in the movie, and that we will find out why Thor was crying. I think this is a sign that Deadpool shows up.
Ryan Gosling is officially Ghost Rider, with Shawn Levy directing
Then came the Ghost Rider announcement: Ryan Gosling is officially Ghost Rider in the MCU. I really like this. I really like Ryan Gosling, and I think he has shown a lot of great acting skill. I have seen so much fan art and AI art of him in the role, and I think he looks great as Ghost Rider. I know some people do not like this choice.
The film was dated for 2028, possibly July 2028, and Shawn Levy returns to Marvel to direct. He recently directed Deadpool and Wolverine, along with things like Free Guy and The Adam Project, and he has a Star Wars movie with Ryan Gosling, Starfighter. Now the two jump from Star Wars over to Marvel. The chemistry seems to be there, and Disney seems to love them in general. Hopefully that is good news for Starfighter too. I love Shawn Levy, I love Ryan Gosling and I love Ghost Rider.
It is a solo movie, and I think it sets up the Midnight Suns. Unfortunately, there was no Blade, but I do think Blade will come in with the Midnight Suns. I really do. So even though we did not get Blade, eventually we will, and in the meantime we are getting Ghost Rider, which you could argue is a better way to start.
Kevin Feige calls VisionQuest the end of the Wanda trilogy
VisionQuest came up too, and Kevin Feige said it is the end of the Wanda trilogy. So it is connected to Wanda, and Vision and the two kids are obviously going to be in it. I think that means Wanda is definitely coming in Doomsday or Secret Wars.
She could be one of the witches displayed on the floor at SDCC. Marvel revealed Avengers: Doomsday Doom witches there, and they look really cool. I do think one is Wanda. We have heard that Doom will have a coven of witches among his followers, and one is supposed to be the Scarlet Witch. Plenty of characters could be following him, and since Marvel did not announce who these figures are, I think they could be the ones.
No X-Men announcements, while Spider-Man: Brand New Day got a new look
Marvel did offer a little for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and it felt as if it was thrown in to fill time. I will just say it: nothing was announced for the X-Men. The X-Men in Avengers: Doomsday were there and on screen, which is cool, but I think a lot of people wanted much more.
Instead, Spider-Man got a new look, and Jon Bernthal went out on stage. Spider-Man: Brand New Day also had its own panel, and Marvel released a ton of new material for it across that weekend, with the film right around the corner. It made sense that they did so much, though I felt they were showing a little too much.
Black Panther 3 dated for December 15, 2028, with a grown T'Challa Jr.
Last but certainly not least, there is a new Black Panther. The actor cast as T'Challa Jr. came on stage as Marvel announced Black Panther 3 with a release date of December 15, 2028, placing it in the next part of the MCU after Secret Wars.
I think this complicates things a little. The actor is 32 in real life, and he is supposed to be the same T'Challa Jr. we met as a child in the post credits scene of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. I do not know how that time jump will work. Some time travel or multiversal event probably has to happen at the end of Doomsday and Secret Wars to bring everything to the same point. Spider-Man has a time jump of only four years, while this is a jump from a little kid to a grown adult in his 30s.
In Doomsday and Secret Wars you can totally do it, with all the magic, science and multiverse activity going on. But it does not seem this will be a variant. It looks like exactly the same T'Challa Jr. from the end of Wakanda Forever. He seems to look good for the part, but if I am being perfectly honest, I would have preferred Damson Idris. He would have been my choice. I am not really familiar with the actor Marvel picked, but I am certainly going to give him a chance, and it is cool to have a T'Challa coming back, even if it is T'Challa Jr.
So there was a new Black Panther, a Ghost Rider coming to the MCU who is new compared to Nicolas Cage's, nothing for the X-Men, really great Doomsday material that I hoped would be released, and new scenes for Avengers: Endgame Encore. It all kicked off with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, with Avengers: Doomsday to follow.
Would you have chosen Damson Idris for T'Challa Jr., or are you happy with Marvel's pick?
