Marvel Teases Scarlet Witch Return as Paul Bettany Stays Quiet on a Maximoff Reunion
A binary code post from Marvel Latin America, a firm no comment from Vision's actor and fresh leaks all point to Wanda's place in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Marvel has teased the return of Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, in an interesting way online, and when Paul Bettany was asked about the Maximoff family, he gave an answer I think is quite telling. Put that together with how VisionQuest is shaping up, and I think Marvel's plan for Wanda in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars seems pretty clear.
Paul Bettany's refusal to discuss a Maximoff reunion stands out
Paul Bettany, who plays Vision, was asked in an interview whether the Maximoff family is going to reunite, specifically in Avengers: Secret Wars. His reply was short: "I'm not allowed to talk about that stuff."
That's interesting to me because these actors are all trained by PR on what to say. Most of the time the answer is some version of I don't know, or we'll have to wait and see. Bettany has said those things before. This time he simply shut the question down and left it at that. To me, something is clearly coming, and they're clearly setting it up in VisionQuest.
Marvel Latin America's binary code post says there are other Maximoffs
Marvel itself has added to this. The official Marvel Latin America account posted a binary code message. If you translate it, what it says is that there are other Maximoffs, the Maximoff family, and some even say there are four Maximoffs. So they're obviously talking about Wanda here.
I want to separate two things. There's a Wanda story in VisionQuest, and then there's the bigger story of everything happening with Vision, Ultron, Tommy and Billy. Billy, or Wiccan, is confirmed to be in the show. All of it is building to a Maximoff family reunion, which in turn builds to Wanda's return.
VisionQuest is setting up Tommy and Vision the way Agatha All Along set up Billy
We already know about Billy. Marvel set him up in Agatha All Along, which was an entire series dedicated to him and to the realization that Wanda is indeed his mother. The same thing is happening in VisionQuest. It's all leading to Tommy, also known as Speed, discovering that Vision is his father and Wanda is his mother.
It's also setting up Vision to come to terms with that. It's especially hard for him because he's a synthezoid. He's struggling with emotions and with logic versus magic, and that's something Ultron has been trying to help him with.
Insiders are weighing in too. One insider says Vision is already on the "we remember" list for Secret Wars, adding: "The show isn't a side story." From what we've been hearing, we have specific reports about what Vision, Billy and Tommy are going to be doing in Avengers: Secret Wars.
The reports say Vision and the Young Avengers will remember on Battleworld
Spoilers ahead if you want to avoid them. The recent reports are that the post-credits scene for Avengers: Doomsday will show Wanda. Then, in Avengers: Secret Wars, the build through VisionQuest is said to pay off with Vision on Battleworld, and he remembers. The Young Avengers reportedly remember as well, and they're going to play a very important role in Secret Wars.
The way they remember is interesting. I think Vision remembers because he's a synthezoid and has the memories inside of him. He's probably not affected the same way humans are when Doom reportedly resurrects everybody at the end of Avengers: Doomsday and places them on Battleworld, a world built out of chunks of many different universes. The humans there aren't going to remember the past. I do think Vision's exception comes down to him having everything backed up so he can access it again.
The Young Avengers are reportedly going to escape that memory wipe by being in the Quantum Realm. Ant-Man reportedly outfits the Fantastic Four ship to travel into the Quantum Realm and tells his daughter to get out right before the end of the multiverse. The Young Avengers and some others go into the Quantum Realm, then come out and go to Battleworld.
As for Wanda in Doomsday itself, I'd say it's really the post-credits scene. We haven't heard much about her in that film beyond reports that she might be one of the witches. That does make sense to me, but it's not confirmed, so we'll have to wait and see.
I think chaos magic is the buildup Marvel is planting in VisionQuest
VisionQuest is the last project before Avengers: Doomsday, with nothing else in between. Marvel knows it's important and knows people are expecting some kind of buildup. I'm not saying there will be a big post-credits scene in the final episode showing Dr. Doom or anything like that. But I think the buildup is through Wanda, and specifically through chaos magic, which is going to be important for both films.
Through VisionQuest, I think we're going to find out that Wanda has the power to create life through her chaos magic. Agatha already told us in WandaVision that she's the Scarlet Witch, someone who isn't supposed to exist and is supposed to be a myth. She's incredibly powerful, which makes a lot of sense as a reason Doom would want her if he knew she was alive.
The MCU's rules differ from the comics, so we don't know how they'll handle this. It might be that there's only one Scarlet Witch in the entire multiverse. Other Wanda variants could be very strong without being the Scarlet Witch, perhaps because they got their powers from the Infinity Stones. We'll have to wait and see.
Taking a fake Billy and Tommy and bringing them into the real world is incredible magic, and that's what the characters are discovering. Billy and Tommy from Westview, their souls or consciousness or whatever you want to call it, are now in these two other boys, and they're real boys now. Then there's Vision unlocking the memories in White Vision, which is also big. For Vision, Billy and Tommy, who are going to be part of an Avengers team and the Young Avengers, this all leads to understanding how powerful Wanda's chaos magic is. I think that's going to be the key to Avengers: Secret Wars, not so much Doomsday. Maybe Doom harnesses some of it, or maybe he gets her on his side. That's a possibility, but it's not confirmed.
The latest leak puts Wanda in Doom's castle while Sue is his wife
What it sounds like for Avengers: Secret Wars is that Wanda is the key to unlocking everybody's memories. MyTimeToShineHello added more on this, after saying Wanda has an army. According to the insider, the leaks have Wanda living in Doom's castle, trusted, while the kids who survived the collapse search for her. In the insider's words: "Sue is still the wife. Wanda is the variable."
When reports surfaced about Doom having Wanda and the Children's Crusade storyline being adapted, many people wondered whether Doom and Wanda would be together. In that storyline, a memory wiped Wanda meets Doom in Latveria and they're set to marry. Her memories come back, she still chooses Doom, and Doom chooses power over her. That's not the story going to happen in Avengers: Secret Wars, from what we're hearing. Doom keeps Wanda in the castle, but he takes Sue as his wife. We've seen the leaked concept art of that, and it makes sense to me. He does that in the Secret Wars comic too, and he's always had a relationship with Sue. Based on what Sue said about him in the trailer, she thought of him highly, which suggests they probably got along well in the Fantastic Four universe.
It's interesting that Doom wouldn't create a variant of the wife he lost. Maybe he can't, because we've heard that only the people present at the very end of Doomsday will be resurrected, and his wife died before that. So maybe the best he can do is wipe Sue's memories, make her his wife and keep Wanda there, apparently trusted, because I think she might be somewhat memory wiped as well.
I think the Maximoff family will awaken Wanda
That leaves it to Billy, Tommy and Vision, the Maximoff family, to awaken her memories so she can use her chaos magic to awaken everybody else. I know this sounds cheesy, but I think it's probably the power of love that awakens her in Avengers: Secret Wars. She'll see her kids and Vision, her feelings will come back to the surface, and she'll start to remember. Doom's spell, or whatever it is, gets broken through love and friendship.
That's exactly what VisionQuest is building toward: Vision reuniting with Billy and Tommy, and the boys finally getting their true family. We already know Billy, so Wanda is the last piece of this puzzle, and we're hearing a lot about her appearing in Doomsday and Secret Wars. Marvel is hinting at her return, and Paul Bettany is keeping quiet about the Maximoff family reunion. I think she's coming back.
