Avengers Doomsday Test Screenings Reportedly Score 98 Out of 100 as Early Reactions Call It One of Marvel's Best
New reports on the opening ten minutes, a Loki scene setup, and Robert Downey Jr.'s casting as Doctor Doom have me thinking this could be the biggest and best Marvel movie yet.
I think Avengers Doomsday could end up being the biggest movie of all time, and possibly the best. Avengers Endgame Encore looks like it is about to reclaim the number one spot for biggest movie ever, but with the new reports coming out of recent test screenings, I think Doomsday could overthrow it. Marvel has also released new post-credit footage for Doomsday through Endgame Encore, and the Russo brothers have been doing a lot of press lately about what went into making this film, including why they cast certain people, plus there are new cameo reports floating around too.
Avengers Doomsday's First 10 Minutes Will Reportedly Give Audiences Heart Attacks
The first report I want to get into comes from Daniel RPK, who is reporting on the early reactions to the first ten minutes of the film. He said the opening ten minutes will give people heart attacks. Reactions are already calling it one of the best Marvel movies ever, which to me is basically the same as calling it one of the best movies ever, since Marvel movies are my favorite outside of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, with Infinity War and Endgame sitting at the top for me.
We already have a good idea of what that opening looks like. It is Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds's Deadpool alongside the X-Men. Ian McKellen has already revealed in interviews that he filmed a scene where Magneto is destroying New Jersey, and I believe it is not just New Jersey but New York and the surrounding area too, since they sit right next to each other.
New footage from Endgame Encore already showed the TVA watching universes attack each other, because when two universes collide the Earths at their center have to fight to survive, and one has to be destroyed. That is apparently what opens Doomsday, with the X-Men traveling to Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man universe to destroy it while Spider-Man fights back in what sounds like an incredible fight. From what I have heard, the movie tries to make you believe Spider-Man and Wolverine have died, and maybe others too, though I think we all suspect they will come back. From what has been described, the X-Men ultimately win and that universe is destroyed.
Test Screenings Reportedly Rate Doomsday at 98 Out of 100
People who attended the test screenings have reportedly rated the film 98 out of 100. That is an extremely high number, though it is worth remembering this comes from a small group of screening attendees rather than the hundreds of thousands of people who eventually grade a film on release.
For comparison, I pulled up the Rotten Tomatoes scores for Endgame, which sit higher than Infinity War: 94 percent from critics and 96 percent from fans on the popcorn meter, while Infinity War sits at 92 percent from fans. I actually thought Infinity War was slightly better than Endgame, or at least that they would land at the same score, so seeing Endgame ahead was interesting to me. Doomsday is reportedly scoring higher than that 96 percent fan number already.
There have been times in the past when test screening reports have come back bad, so hearing something this positive is a good sign. I think a lot of the doubt people had about this movie is starting to fade, especially after seeing some of the new scenes that have come out.
The Loki Scene at Peggy's House Kicks Off the Doomsday Timeline
One of the new scenes released is the Loki scene where he shows up at what is still just Peggy's place, since Steve has only just arrived, and tells her, "I can help both of you." Anthony Russo has already confirmed that this scene is the beginning of Doomsday.
As I see it, that scene is what causes an incursion, setting off a domino effect across the multiverse that eventually leads to Doom. People who have seen footage or reports have already said that the way Doom is portrayed is amazing.
Robert Downey Jr. Was Reportedly Always the Russo Brothers' Choice to Play Doctor Doom
Because Endgame Encore was in theaters, the Russo brothers have been doing a lot of press, and they have said that Robert Downey Jr. was always their choice to play Doctor Doom. I will say, take that with a grain of salt, since of course they are going to hype up the reality they ended up with.
Still, they have been talking about Secret Wars going back to even before Endgame originally came out. After Infinity War and Endgame, people kept asking what could possibly bring them back to Marvel, and their answer was always the same, that only Secret Wars could do it. Now they are saying Robert Downey Jr. playing Doom was always their number one choice, which gives me a bit of comfort about the reasoning behind that casting decision.
A Post-Credit Scene Hints at a Tony Stark and Doom Connection
A lot of people have wondered whether there is a direct connection between Tony Stark and Doom, and one of the post-credit scenes for Endgame Encore seems to hint that there is. Instead of Tony Stark building his first Iron Man mask like in the original Iron Man, we instead see Doom's mask being made, or possibly Tibetan monks making it for him, similar to how it happens in the comics. We will have to wait and see exactly how that plays out.
On top of that, this movie is shaping up to be on the scope of Infinity War and Endgame, maybe even a bit bigger, though Secret Wars is expected to be bigger still than Doomsday.
The Cast Is Reportedly Bigger Than What's Been Announced So Far
Anthony Russo has confirmed that the cast already announced for Doomsday is not the full cast. He said the cast is so large that some of it has been revealed and some has not. That lines up with reports from a couple of years ago, which I believe came from Deadline or Variety, saying there would be more than 65 main characters in the film.
We have already seen a ton of characters confirmed, and I expect some variants and some fun casting choices for those characters still to be revealed. There is going to be fan service in this movie, but I think the Russo brothers will handle it the right way.
The Third Act's Latveria Battle Remains Shrouded in Secrecy
There has not been much information about the third act of the movie. From what the reports and rumors suggest, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men travel to Latveria, in the Fantastic Four's universe, to fight Doom. Beyond that, it is only rumors, nothing concrete from reliable sources.
According to some insiders, the reason we have not heard more about those scenes is that they are reportedly packed with cameos and unannounced characters, and Marvel Studios is keeping a tight lid on it. That tracks with Anthony Russo's comment that not everyone in the cast has been revealed yet.
Between the test screening scores, the new footage and everything the Russo brothers have said about Doom, I think a lot of the doubt people had about bringing Robert Downey Jr. and everyone else back is starting to fade. I just rewatched Infinity War and saw Endgame Encore again in theaters, and those movies still hold up, with the emotion, the comedy like Big Lebowski Thor, and the fan service all landing. I think they will bring that same mix to Doomsday, and that is why I think it could end up being the biggest, and possibly the best, movie of all time. That is just my personal take, and obviously I lean toward Marvel as a fan.
Could Doomsday actually top Endgame as the best Marvel movie ever?
