Our Reactions to Godzilla Minus Zero, The Exorcist: Martyrs, River and Hexed
Goosebumps for Godzilla, a jump in excitement for The Exorcist, a river slasher and mixed feelings about a witchy animated feature
For our 12th Reactathon, we took on four new trailers: Godzilla Minus Zero, The Exorcist: Martyrs, the horror film River and the animated feature Hexed. Godzilla gave us goosebumps, The Exorcist's cast was a surprise, River looks like it could be a fun slasher, and Hexed left us curious but cautious.
Godzilla Minus Zero gave us goosebumps and a Mothra theory
We both got goosebumps, and we noticed it's rated R. It feels like this one will focus a lot more on the repercussions of what happened and the hard truth that you can't save everyone, especially in a natural disaster, and Godzilla is a force of nature. One theory we floated: the woman thrown through a building somehow survives, and maybe the entity of Mothra saved her. I'm really curious how they'd bring that in, because the last one was so based in reality. It looks great, and it's all in IMAX. It feels like we're going to have to fight for IMAX tickets again. I also think it would be really cool to see it twice, once in color and once in black and white.
The Exorcist: Martyrs cast sent our excitement way up
Going in, I knew little beyond Scarlett Johansson being in it. The trailer has her character, a detective I'm guessing, linking serial killers like H. H. Holmes, the Night Stalker, Jeffrey Dahmer and Bundy who claimed to be possessed, along with a reference to Mark chapter 5, verse 9 and the line "My name is Legion." It's set for next March. Then we saw Mike Flanagan's name and the cast, including John Leguizamo and, I think, Laurence Fishburne. The description promises one actor "the most menacing role of his career as Father Sunday," and while I know that's marketing, I also believe it. That sent excitement for this way up. We split here, though: on one side, the Exorcist films have never been seen, the franchise is too scary and this one is a skip; on the other, it's a definite watch, with plenty of excitement.
River reminded us of The Hills Have Eyes on the water
We went into River completely blind. Ashes are dropped from a boat on a river, someone ends up in the water, and something swims after her far too fast. It reminded both of us of The Hills Have Eyes, but in a river community. It's a January release, and January usually brings a lot of horror. Between this, whale fall and Cocaine Bear, "horror movies are slowly destroying any recreational activity," the same way Jaws took away the ocean. It looks like it could be a fun slasher.
Hexed looks fun but leans on familiar storylines
I don't think Disney has quite done an animated feature centered on a young witch this way before, but the similarities stood out: the parents not telling a kid about her powers felt very cliche, very Frozen, and the journey into a vibrant magical world drew comparisons to Alice in Wonderland mixed with a witching world. One guess is that the witch from the coven who tried to take her is her grandmother, or she could just be the coven's leader, and that mom probably went into the real world and fell in love with an outsider, though I don't know. It could be a lot of fun, but it also looks like it could be campy. It sounded like there was also a prophecy involved, which might get a little convoluted, so I'm hoping there aren't too many side quests. We'd need to see more, but we're still going to check it out.
