Godzilla Minus Zero Trailer Teases a Bigger Kaiju and a Second Monster, Has Us Already Planning IMAX Tickets
Reactions to the new Godzilla Minus Zero footage, an exclusive Resident Evil clip, M. Night Shyamalan's Remain, and the Always Lalisa documentary about Lisa of Blackpink
The new trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero already has us planning to buy IMAX tickets the moment they go on sale, and it teases a bigger Godzilla along with a second kaiju entering the fight. We reacted to that trailer alongside three others in this round of trailer reactions: an exclusive clip from the upcoming Resident Evil movie, the first teaser for M. Night Shyamalan's Remain with Jake Gyllenhaal, and the trailer for Always Lalisa, the documentary about Lisa of Blackpink.
We picked four we were genuinely excited about. Godzilla Minus Zero is the one we were most looking forward to, since Godzilla Minus One was amazing to us, especially the character development and the way it evolved Godzilla. Lisa is also a big draw for us since we are going to see her in Vegas in November. We knew nothing about Remain going in beyond it being new.
Godzilla Minus Zero's Trailer Brings Back a Bigger Monster and a Second Kaiju
Before the trailer even started, we noted that this film is believed to be shot entirely in Japan, which we understand makes it not the first Japanese production but possibly the first one fully filmed using IMAX cameras, or digital cameras certified by IMAX. We also brought up the black and white Godzilla Minus One Minus Color variant that came out after the first film, saying it added a level of intensity, gave the movie harsh lines, and a dark, gritty look. About that first film: "I was so frightened when Godzilla first came on the screen of the movie. I was like, I've seen Godzilla films many times, it's fine. And I was like, oh my god."
In the new trailer, Godzilla returns two years after apparently being killed, and a piece of him is examined so they can find a real way to kill him this time. He looks bigger than before, and many people are shown dying from cancer after the nuclear bomb. A character appears to be triangulating Godzilla's location rather than sensing him. We pointed out the new aspect ratio, Godzilla's back glowing blue, and a tease of a new roar that did not sound like Godzilla at all. We first guessed the new kaiju might be Rodan because of its wings, then wondered if it was the three headed monster sometimes called Monster Zero, and a quick search pointed us toward a different classic kaiju rival entirely.
We noted that people barely survived the first film with only one kaiju to deal with, and now there are two, which made us expect the trailer's ending to set up a monster fight. We are planning to see this in IMAX and will buy tickets as soon as they are available, and if we happen to get into a screening beforehand, we will just see it again. What we loved most about the first movie was how much it made you care about the characters, and this trailer looks like it will connect to history again, this time through the radiation sickness and cancer that followed the bombing, and the fact that people back then did not know the full extent of radiation exposure and were still studying its effects. The whole reason Godzilla exists ties back to the fear of the nuclear age, and connecting that real historical fear to the story is something we called brilliant. Godzilla Minus Zero is set for November 6th, and we are hoping for a screening as we get closer to that date, with a review to follow.
An Exclusive Resident Evil Clip Uses First Person Camera Moments Without Feeling Cheap
This was not a trailer but an exclusive clip from the upcoming Resident Evil movie, done in collaboration with PlayStation. We wondered whether the film would integrate gaming elements the way the Doom movie did with its point of view sequences starring a well known action star, which we described as horrible. Having seen the first several minutes shown in the exclusive sneak peek, we said those first person moments are used in this film too, but they do not look bad at all, and they felt well utilized within the context of the scene rather than just being included for the sake of it.
In the clip itself, a character is asked whether he survived whatever was down below and is told to close it, though he leaves a manhole cover open, which we questioned since it seemed to remove a way to seal off danger, though we speculated he may have wanted a way back. He is shown looking unfazed after apparently seeing something disturbing below. He is then swarmed by multiple creatures, with several bursting apart in violent, splattering fashion that we compared to balloons popping, before he keeps running while being told not to stop. We guessed he must have already encountered a couple of these creatures before, shooting them without success, based on how he reacted.
We discussed whether this would be too much gore to sit through, comparing it to The Last of Us and noting it looks like it has more gore than that. We also brought up Zack Cregger's other films, noting we have seen two of the three, with opinions split on Barbarian, and Weapons still unseen. We talked about playing the Resident Evil games ourselves, admitting we mostly watched someone else play or only got partway through because the fear made it hard to keep progressing, so watching someone else felt like a substitute for finishing it. We also noted that the film's chase sequence uses practical effects with bags dropping, and that during filming one of them came very close to actor Austin Abrams, close enough that it could have caused serious injury or worse. Resident Evil is set for September 18th, and we have a screening coming up with a review to follow.
Remain Pairs M. Night Shyamalan With Nicholas Sparks for a Ghostly Coastal Mystery
Remain is directed by M. Night Shyamalan from his own screenplay, with story credit shared between Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks, which we called an interesting collaboration. The official description says a reclusive architect moves to a small coastal town to complete his latest project and encounters an alluring young woman who pulls him out of his shell and into the center of a deadly mystery hanging over the town.
Because the description used the word mystery, we expected a Shyamalan style twist. Watching the trailer, we noticed a moment where it briefly looked like the woman had blood splatter on her, a scene that reminded us of a party game like charades, and a Valentine's Day reference that we initially misread as 2026 before correcting it to 2027. We debated whether the couple was in the same house throughout, wondered why the two characters could not be together, and questioned whether she might be a ghost haunting the house, including scenes of crying in the dark and a moment where she may have gone through a wall. Our working guess was that she was murdered in the house or that something drove her to a fate she cannot move on from.
We found out through a quick search that Remain is based on an existing book that can already be bought, and floated the idea of reading it ahead of the film to compare, though we noted that knowing a twist in advance could take away from it. Since Sparks does not typically write twist endings, we wondered whether any twist would have to come from the book itself. Overall we called it a great official teaser, saying it left us hooked and wanting to find out what is happening right away, and pointed out that the architect detail explains the miniature model seen in the trailer, guessing he traveled to the town partly for a change of setting to find inspiration for his work.
Always Lalisa Traces Lisa's Career From Blackpink to Her Own Company
Always Lalisa is a documentary focused on Lisa of Blackpink that appears set to cover her career up to now, and it is heading to TIFF. We are excited to see her in Vegas in November. The trailer opens with footage of a very young Lisa, who came across as a rock star even then.
The trailer touches on a one year break, and we liked that the teaser itself was short, noting you would want to get as much done as possible in that kind of year off. It also shows the pressure she is under, with someone, possibly her manager, discussing how hard she pushes herself and how she always challenges herself, alongside the idea of wanting to work while you are young, talented, and in demand. One quote from the trailer stuck with us: "It's like when I'm no longer popular, that's when I'll rest." We also noted footage referencing her widely talked about Coachella outfit, which she reportedly wore in two different colors, one of which was specially made for her.
We are curious how much the documentary will get into her own company, LLOUD, since group activities are handled through YG while anything solo falls under her own management. We expect any details of her YG contract to stay off limits, but assume her independent projects are fair game, though we do not think she will drop much unexpected information or do anything to strain her relationship with Blackpink, since the group's success is what gave all of them the platform to pursue solo work in the first place. We also brought up Blackpink's recent ten year anniversary and the other members' solo projects, including Rosé's collaboration with Bruno Mars, Jisoo's work in Korean dramas, and Jennie's collaborations and fashion work.
We also talked about Lisa's role in The White Lotus, where she appeared in almost every episode without being the main focus, and said we liked her acting and would like to see her do more of it, noting she has expressed interest in doing more despite already juggling new music, a new single, and her upcoming Vegas show. We admitted surprise that she is the first member of Blackpink to get her own documentary, since we expected it might be Jennie, Rosé, or especially Jisoo given her ties to film and Korean dramas, but said we will support whatever any of them release and hope Always Lalisa does well at TIFF.
Do you think the woman in Remain is really a ghost, and will Nicholas Sparks let M. Night Shyamalan give the story one of his signature twists?
