WandaVision Episode 7 Review: Agatha Confirmed, Monica Powered Up, and No Fantastic Four Yet
Breaking the Fourth Wall confirmed a suspicion we had held since the first trailer and left open questions about Monica, Vision and Pietro
WandaVision episode seven, Breaking the Fourth Wall, finally confirmed what we had suspected since the very first trailer featuring Agnes: she is Agatha. We liked getting that reveal, and we were slightly disappointed that none of Monica's friends turned out to be from the Fantastic Four.
Getting to the episode at all took some effort. When it dropped, Disney Plus crashed for a lot of people at once. I went straight to Twitter thinking it was just me, but it was apparently happening widely, and it resolved before long. There had also been talk, and rumours we kept reading all over the place, that this would be an hour long episode. My phone listed it at 37 minutes, the standard length, which was fine with us.
Our Fantastic Four guesses for Monica's friend missed
Going in, Reed Richards was probably my top guess for the friend Monica had been meeting, with Sue Storm another option. I had the "crazy theory" that it would be Victor von Doom, which I put down to being sleep deprived. Others were speculating about a big cameo such as the Fassbender Magneto, which would make sense given Evan Peters, though we felt one X-Men from the Fox films might be enough. In the end we were slightly disappointed that the friend was not anyone from the Fantastic Four, but that was totally fine, because we are here as the audience along for the ride.
Our excitement was high: "it's like we get to see an avenger film every single week," and at that level of quality.
Agatha may be the big bad, but Mephisto and Nightmare were not ruled out
The montage suggested Agatha was behind everything. According to that montage, she turned the world black and white, and she brought Pietro in. If she manipulated Wanda into putting up the hex, she can do what she wants inside it. It also explains why she seemed to have the most free will of any resident, and why she pushed Vision to leave the bubble: she does not care about Vision, she wants Wanda.
Still, we were not discounting Mephisto or Nightmare. Agatha talks a lot about a husband who is never there, who could be made up, so she could be the show's big bad without them. Marvel has this planned out, so if they bring in Mephisto or Nightmare it might be through another property such as a movie. In the comics the twins are shards of Mephisto, which could be why Agnes wants the kids. But in the comics, if memory serves, Agatha Harkness was supposed to be a good mentor figure, so maybe she is being manipulated by another powerful being.
Monica's conversation with Wanda, warning that Hayward had ulterior motives, made sense, and if it had gone on longer I feel Monica could have turned her around a little before Agatha cut it off. Part of me wanted my theories to be right, but part of me knew I would probably be wrong. As we put it, with this show "you just don't know and that's why i like it so much."
Monica's third trip through the hex raised questions
Monica getting her full powers looked so cool, with the blue eyes and the stuck landing, which always takes me back to the Deadpool moment: "superhero landing hard on the knees." But we were curious why she was not rewritten. It felt like she should have been, with no real logic otherwise. The counterpoint: no one else had gone through three times, and Vision, who went through twice, is not human, so, arguably, his cells cannot be rewritten the way Monica's can. Maybe her cells were already arranged a certain way, and she seemed to fight it, with multiple images of her including the outfit she first wore in the hex. We expected more explanation later, possibly in Captain Marvel 2.
We also wondered how the rebuilt Vision developed his new mind touch power, and how he knew how to use it.
SWORD loyalty, Evan Peters and the setup for the final episodes
We loved that parts of SWORD saw Hayward as a little nutty and stayed loyal to Monica and Maria, putting their jobs on the line. I was happy to see Evan Peters and want more of his Quicksilver. We wondered what Monica sees when she looks at Pietro, perhaps energy signatures or Agatha's magic.
At the time, two episodes remained, with rumours of a tenth we could not confirm. Vision would likely find the house empty, Darcy would arrive later in that truck, and Monica might go after Wanda or regroup for a team plan. And with Pietro under Agatha's control, would he try to thwart it?
Did you suspect Agatha from the first trailer too, or were you still holding out for Mephisto?
