Resident Evil Requiem DLC Will Dig Deeper Into Spencer, a Writer Hints, as Mansion Rumors Build
A writer on the game let a Spencer story detail slip, and a leaker's reports point to the original mansion, a Separate Ways team and a tight 2027 window.
The Resident Evil Requiem story DLC will dig even deeper into Oswell E. Spencer, and we know that because one of the people who actually wrote Requiem basically said it out loud during a Comic-Con interview, then admitted he probably shouldn't have said it. I think this expansion could end up being one of the most important pieces of Resident Evil content Capcom has put out in years.
Beyond that slip, there's a lot more to get into: reports about the original mansion, who is reportedly building the DLC, how big it could be, and a timing problem with its release that I think almost no one is talking about.
A Requiem writer let the Spencer DLC detail slip in an interview
The writer in question is a freelance game writer and narrative designer who worked on Requiem's story, and he's also credited as a writer on Shadows of Rose, the story expansion for Resident Evil Village. So this isn't a random person guessing or a Twitter leak. This is someone who has actually written Resident Evil DLC and who wrote on the exact game this expansion is attached to.
I really feel bad for him. He was at a Comic-Con doing an interview with a podcast, and while they were talking about his work on Requiem, he explained that the game has an arc for Spencer, which anyone who has beaten the game already knows. Then he went a step further: "In the DLC, you will understand it even further." Right after that, he pretty much admitted that he probably shouldn't have said that. Once the clip surfaced, everyone ran with it. Insider Gaming and a bunch of other outlets wrote it up, so there was really no containing this detail.
Let's be real, it was kind of expected. Knowing the DLC involves Spencer is not massive news. Spoiler warning if you haven't finished Requiem, but the game showed us a side of Spencer we'd never seen before. He actually seems to feel remorse for creating and unleashing the T-virus. For most of the franchise's history, Spencer has been a name in documents, a portrait, a body on the floor in Resident Evil 5. So the idea that the DLC is going to push that arc even further is a pretty big deal in my opinion. Capcom has been putting Spencer at the center of everything for quite a while now, and hearing it straight from a writer makes me even more excited to play this thing.
Dusk Golem says he's heard the Spencer Mansion from RE1 is in the Requiem DLC
The Spencer arc is only half of it, because Dusk Golem says he'd already been sitting on the other half for months, and that this lines up with what he's heard in the past. Right after the writer's clip went around, he posted on social media: "Obviously, previously I said a few months ago that I've heard that Spencer Mansion from RE1 is in the RE9 DLC, but that's all I'll say for now."
He then followed up with a thread that added a lot more. According to Dusk Golem, the DLC is being made by a lot of the same people who worked on Separate Ways for the Resident Evil 4 remake, and it's aiming to be a rather ambitious DLC. The longer we wait, the more ambitious I think this DLC has to be, because the wait is kind of tough. We're having to wait a long time for this thing.
On top of that, he says the Arklay Mansion section was originally a sequence in Resident Evil 9 that got scrapped and then repurposed for the DLC. He also said this DLC, the Veronica remake and RE1 are all in development at the same time, and that there has been an effort to nail down the RE Engine version of the mansion. He lists RE1 right next to the DLC and Veronica. We haven't heard anything official from Capcom about RE1, so treat that as speculation and a leak for now. But if three projects are reportedly sharing one RE Engine version of the mansion, that kind of tells you how important this location is to Capcom right now.
I think the Separate Ways connection is probably the best news in this whole thread. Separate Ways took Ada's side of Resident Evil 4 and turned it into one of the best DLCs Capcom has ever put out. So if that same group is building a Spencer story inside one of the most iconic houses in survival horror, I'm totally in.
Jun Takeuchi's two-track plan is the context for a Spencer DLC
The question is why Capcom would put Spencer and his mansion in a DLC in the first place, and I think they basically already told us the direction they're heading. In the 30th anniversary book released in Japan, Resident Evil executive producer Jun Takeuchi explained that the series is now being developed on two tracks: "The numbered games move the story forward and the remakes let you experience the past."
He said that someday the remakes will catch up with the numbered era, and that Capcom has been gradually preparing for that since around Resident Evil Village. According to the translation, he also said that names like Umbrella and Spencer showing up, along with the return of Raccoon City and Requiem, are also in preparation for a crossover. I think that's the context for this entire leak. Spencer founded Umbrella. He's the connection, I guess we'll say, between the original era the remakes are rebuilding and the modern era the numbered games are living in. If you're really planning a crossover between those two timelines, Spencer is the bridge.
It's not just Requiem pulling on that thread, either. Back in June, according to Dusk Golem, the Veronica remake's producer hinted in a Q&A that the remake ties into the later Resident Evil games, including Requiem. So you've got a Spencer DLC, a Veronica remake that ties into Requiem, and one mansion reportedly being built for all of them. To me, that's exactly what Takeuchi's crossover plan could look like in practice.
An intact Spencer Mansion probably means a story that goes back in time somehow
This is where things get pretty fun, because one detail makes this mansion tricky to explain. The Spencer Mansion shouldn't exist anymore. At the end of the original Resident Evil, the mansion's self-destruct system blows up the entire place, and Spencer himself is dead, killed by Wesker at his estate in Resident Evil 5. So if this DLC puts us inside an intact Spencer Mansion, the story almost has to be about going backwards in time somehow. Or they could rebuild it. There are so many other possibilities.
The first option is a straight flashback. Picture a chapter set in the late '90s, before or even during the mansion incident, showing us what Spencer was doing there and what he knew. That would kind of let Capcom rebuild the mansion in RE Engine without contradicting anything.
The second option is the one I keep coming back to, and it's because of the writer's resume. He wrote Shadows of Rose, a DLC where Rose travels through a world built out of memories and revisits places like Castle Dimitrescu. A memory-based story is the cleanest way to put a dead man and a destroyed mansion back on the screen. And think about the arc Requiem started: a Spencer who regrets what he built is exactly the kind of character whose memories you'd want to walk through.
We also can't forget that Dusk Golem says the mansion sequence was originally part of Resident Evil 9 itself. That means this isn't going to be just random fan service. It was tied to Requiem's main story from the start, and it got pulled out and given room to breathe in the DLC. If I had to pick, I'm going with the memory angle, because the writer of Shadows of Rose working on a story about a man haunted by what he created kind of fits a little bit too well.
A late 2027 Requiem DLC looks tight if the Veronica remake slips
All of this sounds incredible, but there's a timing problem. According to Dusk Golem, the Requiem DLC is aiming for a late 2027 release, and he says the writer mentioning that the DLC is currently in the writing phase lines up with that. Here's the issue. Back in June, Dusk Golem said the DLC would release after the Veronica remake, and that Capcom wants to use longer story DLC, closer to Separate Ways and Shadows of Rose, to fill the gaps between its bigger Resident Evil releases.
Then in September, he said three separate sources told him that Veronica has likely slipped internally to fall 2027 because of late changes, which might also explain why it skipped Tokyo Game Show and Gamescom. Capcom has only ever officially said 2027 for Veronica, so that's still reported, not confirmed. Someone replied to Dusk Golem pointing out that the math doesn't really add up, and honestly they have a point. If Veronica lands in the fall and the DLC has to come after it, late 2027 becomes incredibly tight.
Look at Capcom's history. The Resident Evil 4 remake launched in March 2023, and Separate Ways came out in September, about six months later. Village launched in May 2021, and Shadows of Rose arrived in October 2022, almost a year and a half later. Capcom also wants to give these expansions space. Dropping a Spencer DLC a few weeks after the full Veronica remake would split the audience, and Capcom knows that and they're not going to do that.
So is the DLC getting pushed back internally because Veronica slipped? No one has said that directly, and it's impossible to know at this point. But in my honest opinion, if Veronica really moved to fall, the DLC pretty much has to move with it. A DLC that's still being written in October 2026 has a lot of production ahead of it before it gets close to shipping.
I think the Requiem DLC could get a very short marketing runway
As for when we'll actually see this thing, I think there's a solid chance Capcom doesn't show this DLC until Veronica is already out. Every big marketing beat in 2027 is going to be about Claire, and Capcom doesn't want a Spencer reveal stealing that spotlight. The earliest realistic tease is right around Veronica's launch.
Whenever we get this expansion, I think they might just have a very short marketing runway, where they announce it and then release it. I don't think this is going to be a situation with six plus months of marketing. I think they'll reveal it and release it pretty soon after.
For the release itself, I'm still expecting this thing to drop probably in fall 2027. I still think Veronica is going to hit that early 2027 window, but if Veronica slips a little more, I'm guessing the DLC will do the same. I don't know when it's going to release, but hopefully soon.
Would you rather see Spencer's story told as a straight flashback or as a journey through his memories?
