Capcom Producer Says Resident Evil Remakes Will Catch Up to Numbered Games, but Dusk Golem Says No RE5 or RE6 Remake for Five Years
Jun Takeuchi says Capcom has been preparing a crossover between its remake and numbered tracks, while insider Dusk Golem promises no RE5 or RE6 remake for at least five years
Capcom executive producer Jun Takeuchi has said the Resident Evil remake series will someday catch up with the era of the numbered games, and that Capcom is already thinking about what happens when it does. He went further and said the groundwork has been laid gradually since Resident Evil Village, with Requiem's return to Raccoon City described as preparation for a crossover.
Capcom doesn't usually talk this openly about long term plans. It normally keeps everything locked down until the reveal. So when an executive producer says the team is already thinking about the moment the remakes and the main games meet, that is a pretty big deal. At the same time, a rumour is going around that Resident Evil 5 and 6 remakes are coming, and one of the most trusted insiders recently commented about it. I'll get to that below.
Jun Takeuchi says the remakes and numbered games are heading for a crossover
Takeuchi is the executive producer on Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil Requiem and the upcoming Resident Evil Veronica. He made these comments in a magazine and book combo that went on sale in Japan earlier this week, and the translated quote was also reported by MP1st. His exact words were: "The current Resident Evil series is being developed along two tracks. The numbered titles allow players to experience the ongoing story of the series while the remake series allows them to experience the past."
He continued: "Someday the remake series will catch up with the era of the numbered titles and we are already thinking about what we will do when that happens. In fact, we have been gradually preparing for that since Resident Evil Village." He added that the appearance of names such as Umbrella and Spencer, as well as the return of Raccoon City in Requiem, are also in preparation for a crossover. He used the word crossover himself. It could be a translation error, but from what we know, that is what it says.
Only Resident Evil 5 and 6 stand between the remakes and Resident Evil 7
Think about the two tracks Takeuchi is describing. The numbered games are the present: Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil Village, and now Requiem, which launched in February of this year. The remakes are the past: Resident Evil 2 in 2019, Resident Evil 3 in 2020, Resident Evil 4 in 2023, and now Resident Evil Veronica, which Capcom revealed at Summer Game Fest. We haven't heard about Veronica in a while, and unfortunately it sounds like it might get delayed.
On top of that, MP1st reported last year that a Resident Evil Zero remake is in development under the code name Chamber, which is fitting given Rebecca Chambers. Once Veronica and Zero are done, the remake track has basically covered the entire classic era. If we're being honest, that leaves only two games standing in the way of the numbered era: Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6.
Takeuchi never said RE5 or RE6 by name, but the timeline only works one way. You can't catch up to Resident Evil 7 without going through Africa in 2009, as well as the global outbreak of Resident Evil 6, which released in October 2012 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and in March 2013 on PC. With that said, this is the most direct hint Capcom has ever given us that those two games are on the long term road map. And here's the wild part: Takeuchi was one of the original producers of Resident Evil 5. I think that's pretty important to keep in mind.
Resident Evil 7 was the turning point, and fans pushed Capcom further
Takeuchi also explained why Capcom sees Resident Evil 7 as a turning point. "One of the reasons we regard 7 as the turning point for the series is that it was also the title where we began working on this kind of setup," he said. He explained that the team first included these elements as fan service, but players were far more delighted than expected and began analysing ideas the developers had kept to themselves. So Capcom decided to respond to those expectations and push the setup further in Village and Requiem.
Think about what that means. Resident Evil 7 was a soft reboot, with a new protagonist, a first person camera and almost no connection to the old cast. Then the ending hit and Chris Redfield showed up, and people went wild. I certainly did. Village then showed the photo of Miranda alongside Oswell Spencer, the founder of Umbrella himself, and that one image told us the entire Ethan Winters saga was directly tied to the origin of the T-virus era. Requiem then took us back to Raccoon City, the place that started it all.
I love that Takeuchi is admitting those connections were little Easter eggs at first. Fans started theorising, realised it was all connected, and even connected things the developers had kept private. Capcom saw that reaction and decided to lean in. That is Capcom actually listening to the community, which is one of the reasons we respect them so much, and why I will always buy whatever Capcom sells as long as they keep cooking. The remakes are moving forward in time, the new games keep pulling the old lore back in, and eventually those two timelines are going to meet.
The Resident Evil 5 and 6 remake rumour is not confirmed
This is where things get messy. Some people read Takeuchi's statement as confirmation that Resident Evil 5 and 6 remakes are happening. It's not. As soon as the quote started spreading, multiple accounts popped up claiming RE5 and RE6 remakes are in development at Capcom, and outlets started running with it. An MP1st article even had a section heading saying RE5 and RE6 remakes are seemingly confirmed already.
I think that's jumping the gun, but I understand how they connected the dots. Takeuchi is talking about the remakes catching up, and the only two games left are five and six, so it certainly feels like the obvious next step. But there's a huge difference between Capcom planning for something someday and a game being actively in development right now. Takeuchi said someday. He said they're thinking about what to do, which is not the same as saying they're building RE5 in the RE Engine today.
Dusk Golem promises no RE5 or RE6 remake for at least five years
Insider Dusk Golem, who has been on top of Resident Evil news for years, quoted one of the tweets and said: "Not true as far as I know. I think Resident Evil 5 will happen eventually, but it's not happening as of a few months ago." According to Dusk Golem, Capcom green lit several new Resident Evil projects a few months ago, none of them RE5, and to his knowledge all the teams have their hands full with other projects. I think that alone is probably the biggest news here, because new Resident Evil games are always great.
He added that the only way the rumour could be true is if some project got scrapped within half a year and replaced with this, which he finds incredibly unlikely based on what he has heard. He also said these rumours keep popping up because an RE5 remake is an obvious eventuality, so people will keep pushing fake rumours about it. In his words, "The when and who is super important to this discourse." Then he went further: "I promise you that there's not an RE5 or RE6 remake releasing in the next 5 years at least."
That is a bold statement. Dusk Golem has a mixed track record. He has had some things completely right and some things completely wrong. He did, however, call Leon's appearance in the game, and he called that the Code Veronica and Resident Evil Zero remakes were in the works long before Capcom said a single thing. So with him putting a promise behind a five year window, I take that pretty seriously and I'm going to take him at his word. He hasn't really led us astray in quite a while. It sounds like RE5 and RE6 remakes will be an eventuality, just not within the next five years, which is unfortunate.
Veronica, Zero and new projects are keeping Capcom busy
So if RE5 and RE6 aren't in active development, what are Capcom's teams busy with? First, Resident Evil Veronica, revealed at Summer Game Fest. We know it's releasing sometime next year, but there are rumours of a delay to fall 2027, which now seems a lot more realistic than early 2027. It skipped Tokyo Game Show, so my eyes are on The Game Awards in December. Hopefully we get some news there, but I'm not holding my breath.
Second, the Resident Evil Zero remake, which according to MP1st and other insiders including Dusk Golem is code named Project Chamber. An actor has listed Project Chamber as a lead role on his resume, which most likely means he's playing Billy Coen. According to Dusk Golem, Resident Evil Zero is aiming for 2028. Third, there are the newly green lit projects, and we have no clue what they are. It could be the next numbered game, another remake, or something totally different.
That's why a crossover plan makes a lot of sense to me. Veronica brings back Wesker, and Zero brings back the origins of the Umbrella founders. Both lead directly into the story of Resident Evil 5, so Capcom is clearly weaving its games into each other, one game at a time.
What I want from eventual Resident Evil 5 and 6 remakes
When Resident Evil 5 eventually does happen, first, keep the co-op. RE5 is one of the best co-op games Capcom has ever made, and I personally like it. If the remake drops co-op and becomes a solo horror experience, I think it will lose what made people love it. Second, make it scarier. The Resident Evil 4 remake proved you could take an action heavy game and pull more horror out of it, and RE5 has so much potential. The Wesker volcano fight also needs some adjustments. I thought it was pretty iconic, but it has aged.
Resident Evil 6 is going to be the biggest question mark. It has four campaigns, and I think Capcom might have to reimagine it more than any other remake. Maybe they condense it, maybe they rework the entire campaigns. I don't know, and I think that might be where the crossover could eventually happen. I really have no clue what they'll do with it.
What would you want changed in Resident Evil 5 and 6 remakes, and when would you want them to release?
