4DX and D-Box Effects Aren't Made by the Director, and One Halloween Scare Almost Got Spoiled Because of It
Haptic design teams, not filmmakers, decide when a 4DX seat shakes or sprays water, and that gap nearly ruined a jump scare in Halloween.
The gap between watching a movie at home and watching it in a theater has gotten dramatically smaller. So theaters have started finding increasingly elaborate ways to make the theatrical experience impossible to recreate in a living room. But there is a downside to some of these formats, because the more you start adding to the movie, the further you get from the experience the filmmaker actually intended.
Directors Don't Control When Your 4DX Seat Shakes or Sprays You
With something like D-Box or 4DX, the director usually isn't the one sitting there deciding exactly when the chair should shake or when the audience should be sprayed with water. Both formats have their own team of haptic designers who watch the finished movie and create a track of effects for it.
Studios do get to review the finished experience, and filmmakers occasionally provide notes on what that team has put together. But even with that layer of oversight, the person who directed the movie isn't necessarily the person directing the 4DX version of it.
Those Added Effects Can Change a Scene or Spoil a Surprise
Because the haptic track is built by a separate team, those additions can actually change how a scene plays, or even spoil the movie outright. A burst of wind, a jolt of motion, or a spray of water added at the wrong moment can tip the audience off to something the original cut was specifically trying to hide from them.
The Halloween 4DX Team Had to Redo a Wind Effect That Spoiled a Scare
While creating the 4DX version of Halloween, the effects team originally added wind around some of the scares. The filmmakers pointed out that the wind was essentially warning the audience that something was about to happen, spoiling the surprise before it landed. As a result, the team had to change that effect before the format went into theaters.
