The Death of Superman leaves us emotionally wrecked, and it may be our favourite DC animated film yet
Doomsday's brutal rampage, a surprisingly adult tone and a bridge fight we found brilliant
The Death of Superman is, we think, our favourite of the DC animated films we have covered so far. Part of the reason is how emotionally wrecked it left us. This is the first time we have seen the heroes beaten this badly. Even Wonder Woman's sword broke.
Doomsday is terrifying because he only wants to destroy
What makes Doomsday so frightening to us is that he has no mission beyond destruction. We still do not know where he came from or what his story is. We are sure plenty of people already know what Doomsday is all about. We do not. We just know he is very scary. During the fight, we wondered whether he was some kind of mimic who absorbs powers, especially once he started copying Superman's laser eyes.
Superman's death felt almost biblical
When Superman died, "It did feel very Jesusy." Bibbo's Hail Mary as he reflected added to that, and so did the empty tomb and Superman's return to life. We do not know where Superman is mentally now. He has never been beaten like that, forced into a coma, made to bleed like that and then revived. He was revived by his car seat, of all things, which we thought was cool. We also liked getting a brief look at his parents. Presumably the crystal means we will see his parents give him wisdom as well. On top of that, he broke up with Diana, got together with Lois, revealed his secret identity and said the I love you words. Put simply: "I feel wrecked inside. And as we thought, I want more."
The tone feels adult, and the bridge fight is a standout
The dialogue feels more modern and more adult. The earlier films seemed like they might be a kid show, and now it feels like animation for adults, or really for everyone. Some of the shots were incredible, especially the bridge scene where Doomsday pulls Superman through the car. Animation has obvious limitations as well as freedoms, but every film in this run gives us something exciting in the cinematography or the fight choreography. It feels like a live action movie "That just happens to be animated." We were also surprised to learn afterward that Rainn Wilson was in the cast. That explained why a voice sounded so familiar.
Everyone got a glow up, except maybe Aquaman
The characters all look better than before. Aquaman was the possible exception: opinions split, with one view that he looked better in previous films and another that it's too early to give up on him. He does feel more like the classic Aquaman now, though. Lex looks more chiseled. Cyborg looks the same, even after the talk of new tech giving him an upgrade. Next up is Constantine and then Reign of Superman, so maybe he gets one there. It was good to see Cyborg repairing his relationship with his dad. We also caught Damian for half a second, apparently away at boarding school rather than with the Teen Titans.
Then there is the new figure at the end. We saw purple, green and pink clones that we assume are Flash, Green Lantern and Wonder Woman. We did not agree on who this one is. One guess is that it is a bad Superman clone, while Damian was floated as another possibility. Do you think that final figure is a Superman clone?
