Ranking the X-Men Mutants Brought Into the MCU, From Toad to Jean Grey
With the X-Men officially in the MCU after Deadpool and Wolverine, here is how the mutants stack up, from a sticky tongue to the powers of a cosmic god
Deadpool and Wolverine wasn't only an amazing movie. It also officially launched the X-Men into the MCU, so I ranked the mutants now officially in the MCU from weakest to strongest, and Jean Grey comes out on top. We saw Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in an MCU movie, and "what a time to be alive." Here's how the rest of the roster lines up, starting from the very bottom.
Toad, Caliban and Jubilee sit at the bottom of the list
Last place has to be Toad. His mutant power is literally a long sticky tongue and acting like a frog. The guy's a joke, and he has to be in last place here.
Caliban is basically a mutant version of a find my friend app. He's like a bloodhound who can find mutants all over the world just by his sense of smell. It's a useful power, sure, but it's also an oddly specific one, and it doesn't put him too high on the list.
Jubilee can basically shoot fireworks out of her hands. With a power like that, I guess she could have been higher on the list, but we've literally seen nothing from her, so to the bottom she goes.
Darwin's adaptation couldn't save him, and Wolfsbane, Viper and Angel stay low
Oh, Darwin, what could have been. His mutant power is supposed to be reactive adaptation, meaning his body rapidly grows and evolves to protect him from any attack and allow him to survive in any situation. It's all focused on keeping him alive, or at least that's what his power is supposed to be, because Darwin was pretty much instantly taken out by the first bad guy he ran across. Not all that impressive.
Wolfsbane is basically a werewolf, though not literally one, since her change doesn't depend on the moon. Her power is to transform into an actual wolf. It's cool and it's useful in a fight, but it's not all that impressive or powerful, especially compared to a whole lot of other mutants out there.
Viper is pretty much just a snake lady, complete with all the snake powers you could want. She has a long tongue, she can create all sorts of venoms and toxins, and she can even heal from injuries by pretty much shedding her skin like a snake and regenerating that way.
Even though Angel was one of the original X-Men in the comics, he's never really been given the spotlight or time to shine in the movies. He has two versions: his main form, and Archangel as a servant of Apocalypse. Archangel can throw metal feathers around, but his main superpower is just being able to fly with his angel wings.
Banshee's versatility and Warpath's senses lift them into the next tier
Banshee has the power of a sonic scream. It's deafening to everyone nearby and will give all the dogs in the neighborhood a headache. One of the main advantages here is the versatility: he's learned how to fly by riding the sound waves of his scream, and he even has a limited form of echolocation.
Warpath is basically the X-Men's version of a super soldier. He's superhumanly strong and fast, he's tough, he's a skilled fighter and he loves his knife. But maybe the greatest thing he has are his senses. He can see in the dark and detect things moving up to 10 miles away.
At first, Yukio had the mutant power of death touch, meaning she could know exactly how someone was going to die. After the timeline rebooted, her power became electricity manipulation, which is a lot more handy in a fight. It allowed her to help take down Juggernaut alongside Colossus and her girlfriend.
Firefist has some powerful pyrokinesis, and we know he gets more powerful in the future, but as a teenager, this is kind of where he tops out on the list. Psylocke has the ability to manipulate psychic energy, which she usually uses to create weapons and swords for fights. She's basically a purple psychic ninja, a really skilled fighter and a deadly killer.
Beast lacks versatility, while Lady Deathstrike, Gambit, Pyro, Blink and Blob climb higher
Beast is an interesting one. He's another of the founding X-Men in the comics, and in the comics you can argue he should be higher than this. Just in the movies, though, I believe this is a fair spot, simply because of Beast's lack of versatility. He's incredibly strong and surprisingly fast and agile, but that's about all he has, and when he tries to take on Magneto, that's not going to go too well.
Lady Deathstrike is basically a lady Wolverine, except instead of claws she has very long fingernails. Those fingernails are covered in adamantium, meaning they can instantly take people out with one slash, and she has a pretty nice healing factor too, though not quite as good as the other healers on this list.
Gambit has the ability to charge items with biokinetic energy and make them explode. He usually just throws playing cards around, which go off with the force of a grenade, but he can theoretically charge just about anything, and the larger the item, the larger the explosion. You might not think about Pyro too much, but he turns out to be one of the better pyrokinetics in this universe. He can instantly disintegrate people with one blast, but while he can control fire, he can't create it, so he has to carry a lighter at all times.
Blink comes from the alternate Days of Future Past universe, and creating portals at will is a very handy power. She can instantly teleport around a fight and get out of harm's way, but she can also close those portals in an instant, and "trust me you don't want to get caught in one when that happens." Blob is, well, a blob of a man, but you really don't want to call him that. He's superhumanly strong, but even more than that he's incredibly tough, basically invulnerable to all sorts of attacks, to the point where he could take a direct blast from a tank and not even be fazed.
Silver Samurai's armor earns a spot, alongside Sunspot, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Azazel, Domino and Mystique
Silver Samurai might not technically be a mutant, but he was the main villain in one of the movies and was trying to steal mutant powers, so it seemed fitting to include him. The armor is actually pretty powerful. It's made entirely of adamantium, so it's pretty much indestructible, its adamantium blades can even cut through other adamantium, and it can steal mutant powers.
Sunspot can absorb and manipulate solar energy, basically making him the X-Men's Human Torch. He uses that sunlight to shoot flame blasts and burst into flames, and he gains super strength and super durability. Negasonic Teenage Warhead is basically a walking, talking nuclear bomb, except a really low key one. She can create explosions out of her body at will, basically throwing herself at an opponent and detonating, and she can use the same energy to create force fields around herself so the blast doesn't injure her.
Azazel is basically just like Nightcrawler. He might be Nightcrawler's dad, which is a little up in the air, but they have essentially the same powers and look pretty much exactly the same. He can teleport at will, disappearing and reappearing in a cloud of red smoke.
People make fun of Domino's powers, but being lucky turns out to be a pretty useful power. She can manipulate probability fields around her, turning things in her favor however improbable, which makes her kind of overpowered in a fight sometimes, and she's also a really good fighter and an elite mercenary. Mystique was born able to shape shift into anyone, which comes in handy when your real form is a blue skinned, scaly lady. She's also very fast, agile and a skilled fighter who can casually take down most opponents and even hold her own against someone like Wolverine.
Bishop, Cannonball, Havok, Laura, Mirage, Nightcrawler and Kitty Pryde fill the middle
Bishop can absorb and redirect all different types of energy and fire it back out as his own energy blasts, basically taking your attack and using it against you. There are limits, though: his energy absorption can be overloaded and take him out. Cannonball can basically turn himself into a living cannonball, charging up with energy and launching himself at an opponent. That same energy creates a force field that makes him invulnerable, so while he's charging head first into harm's way, he's not actually hurt.
Havok is Cyclops's older brother and has basically the same power, a concussive energy blast, except it comes out of his whole body instead of his eyes. At first he had no control and it would shoot out all over the place, but eventually he learned and mastered his powers and was pretty powerful. Laura, also known as X-23, is Wolverine's biological daughter with essentially the same powers: a powerful healing factor that lets her heal from literally any attack, and adamantium claws, including one that comes out of her feet.
Mirage is an interesting one. She doesn't have the greatest control over her powers, but they can be absolutely crippling and take down much more powerful foes. Her illusion casting lets her conjure her opponents' greatest fears and nightmares and use them to terrorize enemies, causing serious mental and physical pain.
Nightcrawler is the original teleporter for the X-Men. He's an expert with his powers, nearly impossible to tag in a fight, and he can pick up enemies and teleport with them to take them out of the fight. Kitty Pryde can phase through objects by shifting herself on the atomic level, and what's especially devastating is when she takes someone along for the ride and leaves them trapped halfway in an object.
Cable, X-24, Sabretooth, Cyclops, Sebastian Shaw, Rogue and Emma Frost push toward the top
Cable is a cyborg mutant soldier from the future, so there's a lot going on there. He's an excellent warrior and an expert killer with superhuman strength and durability from his cyborg body, a whole lot of futuristic tech and weapons up to a time travel device, and some limited telekinesis. X-24 is a clone of Wolverine with all the real Wolverine's powers and skills but without the humanity, and he's surprisingly strong with adamantium claws. The only downside is that his healing factor might not be fully developed, so do enough damage and he'll eventually go down, it just takes quite a while.
Sabretooth is Wolverine's half brother, with retractable claws and an advanced healing factor, but he embraced his animalistic side and became a brutal killer. He's actually stronger than Wolverine, with a healing factor almost on par and claws and fangs that can slice through almost anything, though unlike Wolverine's, they're not covered in adamantium. Cyclops, the leader of the X-Men, fires seriously powerful optic blasts, and Scott has incredible aim. He's even mastered the ricochet like he's Captain America or something.
Sebastian Shaw led the Hellfire Club, which was dedicated to starting a nuclear war to destroy humanity. He can absorb all types of energy and use it to boost his physical abilities or unleash devastating blasts, which makes him ridiculously hard to beat, since he can take the kinetic energy from your attack and turn it back on you. Rogue absorbs a person's memories and powers by touching them, and if she holds on long enough she'll absorb their life. She can also use another mutant's powers herself, meaning she can potentially have any mutant power out there for a short time.
Emma Frost, a former Hellfire Club member, has two pretty good powers. She can turn her body into diamond and become very strong and tough, and she's a very powerful telepath, arguably on the same level as Charles Xavier. However, she can't use both powers at the same time, and that weakness has been used against her in the past.
Deadpool, Colossus, Wolverine, Iceman, Magik, Storm and Juggernaut make the upper ranks
Deadpool is technically a mutant: he was injected with a drug meant to activate any hidden mutant gene. It technically worked, giving him a healing factor on par with Wolverine's, but it also kind of ruined his life. He took it in stride and became an elite mercenary, one of the best fighters and killers on the planet. Colossus is the big lumbering muscle, but also a teddy bear with a heart of gold. His living steel body makes him strong and tough enough to beat Angel Dust or hold his own against Juggernaut, although he got pushed to fighting dirty in that one.
Wolverine is easily the most famous X-Men, with adamantium claws and a healing factor that lets him survive literally any attack, even nuclear bombs. He's a skilled fighter, a lethal killer, and "he's the best at what he does what he does isn't pretty." Iceman can turn himself into ice and also shoot ice around him, freezing people, catching them in ice or hitting them with ice blasts, and it looks like he can actually control cold and heat itself.
We've never really seen much from Magik, since she was in the only X-Men movie most people didn't see, but her powers are legit. She can travel between dimensions, jumping in and out of Limbo at will, and with her soul sword she was the one who gave the best fight to the Demon Bear, a literal embodiment of fear. Storm controls the weather at will, shooting lightning bolts and commanding thunderstorms, hurricanes and tornadoes. She's easily one of the most powerful mutants out there and definitely one of the top members of the X-Men, no doubt about that.
There have been a few versions of Juggernaut, but this one is definitely the most powerful and most intimidating. He's incredibly strong, maybe the strongest mutant out there. He's not straight up invulnerable or unstoppable like in the comics, but he's still very tough and can rock just about anyone in a fight.
Cassandra Nova, Quicksilver, Professor X, Magneto and Apocalypse are near the summit
Cassandra Nova is the twin sister Charles Xavier never knew he had, the ruler of the Void and one of the most intimidating rulers you'll ever see. Her powers are telepathy and telekinesis, and she's absolutely ruthless with them, tearing people apart and reaching into their minds to rip out their deepest secrets. You really don't want to cross her unless you have a healing factor on your side. Quicksilver, Magneto's son, is easily the fastest mutant out there, reaching supersonic speeds with no problem, and that speed helps him land a punch that rocks Apocalypse. With only a handful of mutants fast enough to catch him, I would say he deserves to be near the top.
Professor X founded the X-Men and is one of the most powerful telepaths on the planet. He can read minds with ease, even tapping into almost every mind on the planet at once, and once he's inside your mind he can shut it down, knock you out, take control, or plant memories or suggestions. "It's really scary when you think about it." Magneto, his best friend with a very different view of mutants and humanity, is the master of magnetism and can control everything on the electromagnetic spectrum, though he usually just manipulates metal, from pulling the metal out of a person's blood to shifting the Earth's magnetic poles.
Apocalypse is the first mutant, the ancestor of all mutant kind, and fittingly one of the most powerful. He has telepathy and telekinesis, creates portals and force fields, manipulates matter, and is so strong, fast and tough that he might actually be straight up immortal. He can even bestow powers on others, making them extremely powerful too.
Jean Grey ranks as the most powerful mutant
At the top of the list, it had to be Jean Grey, the person who beat Apocalypse, and that was before she had officially tapped into the Phoenix Force. She's not only the most powerful telepath on Earth, she also has essentially unlimited telekinesis, so she can pretty much do whatever she wants with a thought.
After merging with the Phoenix, she became even more powerful, easily dwarfing both Professor X and Magneto, since she was essentially given the powers of a cosmic god. There's no doubt about it: Jean Grey is the most powerful mutant we've ever seen.
