Avengers: Secret Wars Resistance Reportedly Led by Three Spider-Men, Deadpool, Wolverine and the Young Avengers
A new insider report claims only a small group of heroes will remember the multiverse before Doomsday, and I think their powers may explain why
The main resistance in Avengers: Secret Wars will reportedly be led by three Spider-Men, the Peter Parkers from all three universes, alongside Deadpool, Wolverine, Reed Richards, Vision, She-Hulk and a mix of the Young Avengers. According to the insider MyTimeToShineHello, these may be the only heroes in Battleworld who keep their memories of the multiverse that existed before Avengers: Doomsday.
There's an inherent spoiler warning built into any Secret Wars rumor. If a character is said to appear in Secret Wars, surely that means they survived Doomsday. As we go deeper into next year, theorycrafting, leaks and rumors won't matter as much for Secret Wars, because in three months we'll all have seen Avengers: Doomsday. Until then, this lineup carries some real implications.
Some Avengers Have Already Confirmed They Are Filming Secret Wars
Certain actors have come out and confirmed that they'll be filming on Avengers: Secret Wars, including Anthony Mackie, Simu Liu and Chris Evans. Presumably, that means their characters survive Doomsday.
For a lot of the other characters on this new list, though, their fate is unknown. On top of that, there's at least one character on the list who is said not to make it out of Avengers: Doomsday alive, and yet here they are.
MyTimeToShineHello Says Three Spider-Men Will Lead the Heroes Who Remember
This latest update comes from the anonymous Twitter scooper and industry insider MyTimeToShineHello. I often remind people to take everything with a grain of salt, and no scooper gets everything right. But there's a reason the name is recognizable, and the track record definitely speaks for itself over the last decade.
According to the insider, the main resistance in Secret Wars will be the heroes who won't wake up loyal to God Emperor Doom, and who will have some retention of their memories of a world before Doom and the multiverse before Avengers: Doomsday. That group will reportedly be led by three Spider-Men, meaning Peter Parker from all three universes, along with Deadpool, Wolverine, Reed Richards, Vision, She-Hulk and a conglomeration of the Young Avengers.
Everyone else will reportedly be loyal to Doom, with no memories of the multiverse beforehand. This team will basically be the Avengers, or the resistance, in Battleworld, looking to be the impetus that wakes everyone else up.
The Young Avengers and Champions May Already Be Assembling, Possibly in Kate Bishop's Apartment
The Young Avengers and Champions team referenced in the report is made up of Billy Kaplan, Tommy Shepherd, Cassie Lang, Kate Bishop and Kamala Khan. And there's a detail you may have missed from the release of the ScreenX trailer. ScreenX is an enhanced format where the screen is super elongated and extended onto the side walls of the theater, basically giving a wider field of view so the image looks like it goes beyond your periphery.
In that wider version, a lot of people noticed that the scene where Ant-Man kisses his daughter on the head has details that make it look like they may actually be standing in Kate Bishop's apartment. That's the same apartment we saw Ms. Marvel try to recruit her in during the postcredits scene of The Marvels. So we may see some semblance of this team beforehand.
It's also mentioned that Vision Quest, which drops on Disney Plus in just a week or so, may lead directly into Avengers: Secret Wars. Even though the series comes out before Doomsday, its ending may lead straight into Secret Wars. I've argued that may be a little odd, because it may reveal too much before we see the end of Doomsday, so I'm not going to hold my breath on that.
Why This Lineup Matches What DanielRPK Has Been Saying
Up until now, the insiders I trust, like DanielRPK, have always indicated that if you didn't get a huge role in Avengers: Doomsday, you would be featured in Avengers: Secret Wars. That team was always primarily going to be made up of Deadpool and Wolverine, Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, which is looking more and more likely, and some of the other heroes who will have less or no screen time in Doomsday, like the Young Avengers or the Champions.
That's how this newest list ties into what we've been hearing about Secret Wars for the last year.
Spider-Man's Resistance to Mind Control May Explain Why Peter Parker Remembers
Quite honestly, you don't have to go too far into spoiler territory to see why it may be these specific heroes on the resistance, and maybe some of the only heroes who keep their memories in a Battleworld where everybody else thinks Battleworld is all that's ever been.
I don't think it's a coincidence that during Spider-Man: Brand New Day, they chose Jean Grey alone just to introduce the X-Men and get that going, while also highlighting Peter's ability to resist being mind controlled. That probably has something to do with his spider sense and his connection to the web of life and destiny. Whatever the exact explanation is, it's easy to believe that the other Spider-Men, Andrew Garfield's and Tobey Maguire's Peter Parkers, would also be able to resist mind control. I think that may be why only a few heroes have memories of a past multiverse.
A Quantum Realm Detour With Reed Richards Could Let Other Heroes Skip the Mind Wipe
The other heroes, the Young Avengers and the Champions, have been heavily rumored to circumvent the collapse of the multiverse into Battleworld by taking a detour through the Quantum Realm. Every time I've covered this leak, at least two or three times now, I've said it's going to feel too much like Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Ant-Man goes into the Quantum Realm, Thanos snaps, Ant-Man comes out, and there's your catalyst for how they solve Endgame.
I have to give the writers and the Russos a lot more reverence and credit than that. I don't think they're going to rehash Infinity War and Endgame in any way. In fact, I think they'll do the opposite and go out of their way to actively avoid the same beats and the same functions for plot devices.
However, I also don't think it's a coincidence that Reed Richards is in this group. He may be part of the team that travels into the Quantum Realm via a life raft or some other invention and then ends up in Battleworld. So the Spider-Men's memories of a pre-Battleworld multiverse would be inherent in their abilities, while some of the other heroes may avoid the mind wipe and arrive with memories of timelines like the 616 and the 828 by bypassing the collapse and the Battleworld formation event altogether, traveling through the Quantum Realm and coming out in Battleworld.
If you've read some of the plot leaks, that's rumored to be one of the very last scenes of the movie. Some of the Champions, Young Avengers and other heroes basically pop out in this life raft into a Battleworld or void showing the remnants of a destroyed timeline, left bewildered to figure out what happened and what they're going to do now.
Doctor Doom's Runes and Gamma Suppression Could Keep Every Other Hero in Check
Two people with the same information can come to a reasonable conclusion, which is why you can't copyright ideas and theories. But back in the days of Infinity War and Endgame, I tried to give credit where I could, and I had a couple of theories of my own that other people took and ran with. I was one of the first to say that the circle of runes Doctor Doom shows us around the stained glass window reminded me of WandaVision, where Agatha Harkness teaches Wanda that a circle of runes depowers any other sorcerer inside it, so only the one who put up the runes can wield magic.
I've always thought that the rune iconography, and the circle of runes around the green stained glass window at the end of the Avengers trailers, means that's one of the suppression techniques Doom will use. He'd rule a Battleworld encapsulated in runes of his own, the same runes we already see on his glove when he teleports into postcredits scenes like the one with Dr. Banner, suppressing or dampening every other magic user.
I also don't think it was a coincidence that Dr. Banner was talking about gamma suppression in that scene before Doom shows up. He's able to suppress gamma, which may be at the basis of how mutants were created after the snap in the MCU in the first place, and it seems like that's where they've been going with it the whole time, or at the very least it's a way to control the Hulks. So there may be a ton of methods by which Doom has built himself up through magic and technology, then made himself doubly powerful by suppressing every other hero's ability to fight back, whether by suppressing gamma, mind wiping them into subservience, or blocking magic with his runes.
There's plenty still in store for Avengers: Doomsday. But from what we know of the story for Secret Wars, most heroes, if not all of them, will have their minds wiped, and only the ones who remember the world before Doom will attempt to wake everyone else up and fight against him at the end of the movie to try to restore the multiverse.
Is this the team you want to see: the Young Avengers, the Champions, She-Hulk, Vision, Wolverine, Deadpool and the three Spider-Men?
