Marvel's Endgame Encore Scene May Reveal Where Doctor Doom Took Spider-Man After Brand New Day
Joe Russo's comments to Empire about whoever visited Bruce Banner point to Peter Parker being taken to what I assume is the beginning of Battleworld.
New comments from the Russos about the Avengers: Endgame Encore post credits scene with Bruce Banner shed a ton of light on the cryptic Spider-Man: Brand New Day post credits scene. Put the two scenes together and I believe we know exactly what happened to Peter Parker, where he is now, and why.
Over the last two months I have been a little critical of both the Brand New Day post credits scene and some of the post credits scenes attached to the Avengers: Endgame Encore rerelease. I just wish Marvel had gone a little further in showing us what is going on with Doctor Doom. But the latest update from the Russos about what Doom is up to when he talks about "collecting" Bruce Banner changes how I read both scenes.
The Spidey tracker glitch links Brand New Day to Doom's Endgame Encore scene
In the Avengers: Endgame Encore post credits scene, Doctor Doom shows up and, in his own words, collects the Hulk. We know it is the Hulk because Banner transformed right before they disappeared, probably by teleportation through the rune that appeared on the floor. That is the same rune we have seen in Doom's throne room.
The Spider-Man: Brand New Day post credits scene, by comparison, has almost nothing happen. It is just the screen of the Spidey tracker, but we see some glitching similar to what we saw in the Endgame Encore scene. Noticeably, there is no Doom rune, because everyone covering these films would have pointed that out immediately. Then, all of a sudden, the tracker drifts right into the middle of space.
Joe Russo told Empire that Doom's interest may go beyond Banner
It is the recent quotes from the Russos that, to me, basically confirm a tie between the two scenes. In a conversation with Empire magazine, Joe Russo said: "Somebody pays Banner a visit in what is the most secure place on the planet and clearly he's dealing with the trauma and fallout of what happened in Brand New Day trying to protect the world from him and somebody found him."
He continued by saying, "His interest may extend beyond just Banner." The Russos also added, "You've got to have some surprises, right? Ruffalo is certainly involved in the story that revolves around Doom."
Keep in mind how little dialogue Marvel Studios has given Doctor Doom. Between the trailers and the post credits scenes, it is just a handful of sentences, and he did not even speak in the Fantastic Four post credits scene he appeared in. So the fact that he uses the word collect means, as I read it, that he is collecting more heroes than just Banner. That is what I take the Russos to be saying point blank here. Set that against the Brand New Day scene, and although it was heavily theorised, this is the confirmation I needed that Doom also collected Peter Parker and took him to where we assume is the beginning of Battleworld.
We are in the endgame of Doctor Doom's plan, not the beginning
Some people have supposed that this place is the Void, or the remnants of the Void, with things being pulled out of time and space and put there to start building it. I am not so sure Doom has not been engineering his own architecture for Battleworld.
As I have said many times going back two years now, and as seems more and more the case as we get closer to the event, Doom has been at this for a while. We are not picking up at the beginning or even the middle of his plan, the way we did with Thanos when he was on his way to collecting the stones. We are in the actual endgame of Doom's plan, and it is all going down by the time we get to Doomsday.
That means that although the heroes will try their best to stop this, we all know what is coming. That is why there is Avengers: Secret Wars. Whether or not it is an evolution of the Void, the setting of Secret Wars will definitely be Battleworld, and it is safe to assume that is where Doom has taken Banner and now Peter Parker as well.
Hulk, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange point to Doom collecting the 616's most powerful heroes
If there is already a Battleworld and Doom is already taking heroes there, which heroes is he collecting and why? Marvel has now given us two, Hulk and Spider-Man, and we basically have to go off that. There are rumours, though. Characters like Scarlet Witch have reportedly returned, at least for Secret Wars, if not a cameo in Doomsday as one of Doom's followers.
If you think about those characters alongside Doctor Strange, it looks to me like Doom is collecting all the most powerful heroes from the 616, with a character like Sentry as the exception. Just look at who he is going after: Doctor Strange, Hulk, Spider-Man and possibly Scarlet Witch.
Look at who is left. Take the Falcon and his version of the Avengers, plus the super soldier types on the Thunderbolts like John Walker, the Winter Soldier and Red Guardian, and there are a ton of lower powered heroes going into battle against Doom. They will be assisted by the mutants of the X-Men, which will be a major power boost, and they still have Sentry and Thor, which is another enormous boost. Shang-Chi is nothing to scoff at either, although I think Marvel Studios completely dropped the ball in showing us what he can do. Hopefully Simu Liu's character gets a lot more shine in this film.
Why Doom may want Hulk and Spider-Man to survive on Battleworld
I think it actually runs deeper than simply taking the most powerful heroes. Doom wants them to be a part of Battleworld, which in turn means he wants them to survive the destruction that is coming when the incursions finally wipe out the rest of the multiverse. If we are to believe the TVA's picture of the multiverse collapsing, there should be only about three universes left: the 828, the 616 and the 10005. When that is finished, we will all be headed to Battleworld.
Taking these heroes off the chessboard could mean Doom does not have to fight them in the final battle to enact his plan. I think that is the real reason: he is playing chess, not checkers, and figures that if the strongest heroes are out of the way, he has a better chance of succeeding. By extension, those same heroes could end up serving his purposes under his mind control as part of his new Battleworld.
I think it may be that, in the same way Doctor Strange will most likely become his sheriff, Doom could be taking these heroes to install them in heads of state positions, such as putting Hulk in Greenland or Peter Parker on Spider Island, among the remnants that will make up Battleworld. They would lead, but underneath him, making his rule as God Emperor Doom easier.
The anchor beings theory does not quite fit, but it may still matter
I have also heard a theory or two about these heroes possibly being anchor beings, with Doom clearing them out to make the multiverse collapse. But remember the Endgame Encore scene: whatever his plan is, as I have often said, we are right at the end and it is already working. It does not seem like he needs to remove Hulk or Peter Parker if one of them happens to be an anchor being, or remove anchor beings in those other two universes.
There may still be something to it, though. Marvel Studios made sure to work the idea into Deadpool and Wolverine so that we would learn it for a future point that has not arrived yet, and there are only a couple of those points left.
Do you think Doom is collecting Hulk and Spider-Man to rule Battleworld under him, or is the anchor being theory the real explanation?
