Vision Quest, the Wolverine Game and That New Doomsday Footage From Marvel's D23 Panel

From James Spader's bearded Ultron to a fresh Avengers Endgame scene tying into Doomsday, here is everything Marvel showed off at its D23 presentation.

Marvel's D23 presentation gave us a first proper look at Vision Quest, new details on the Wolverine video game, a re-release of Avengers Endgame with a brand new scene connecting it to Doomsday, and a fresh batch of Doomsday footage that is now public. Here is everything worth digging into from that panel.

James Spader and Paul Bettany came out to introduce the Vision Quest trailer, and it immediately reminded me of the funky visual playground that WandaVision built. There are tech glitchy moments, very stylized looks, and James Spader's Ultron showing up as a bearded man. "He seems so deliciously problematic, and I'm really excited for Vision to be grappling not only with who he is, but what it means to be human and how he has to move through this world." I think this is going to be a very promising series.

Vision Quest draws on Tom King's Vision comic run

If this kind of story appeals to you, I would personally recommend reading the 2015 to 2016 run of The Vision written by Tom King, who also wrote Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. That comic is good regardless of how you feel about the movies, and I think it gives real insight into what this series could explore. We've got a lot going on with Vision trying to figure out his identity and some stuff about his own kids.

Vision Quest is set to stream on Disney Plus, and based on what was shown, I think it is one that will be genuinely worth watching once it arrives.

Marvel's Wolverine gets a September release and a bloody first look

From the show side, the panel also covered Marvel's Wolverine, the Insomniac and Sony game coming to PlayStation 5 in September. For anyone worried about how Sony feels about physical media right now, this one is getting a physical release too. The recommendation is to download patches once you have it, but you will be able to hold a physical copy.

The gameplay footage shown was very brutal and very bloody. The one thing I am not personally thrilled about is another Wolverine and Jean Grey pairing, since that romance just does not do it for me, though that is purely my own take. Even so, the gameplay looked incredibly violent and visceral, and I do plan on playing this. I also always enjoy any excuse for the little claw "snikt" moment.

Avengers Endgame's theatrical re-release adds a new scene tied to Doomsday

Avengers Endgame is getting a re-release in theaters in September, and it will include a new scene that connects the film to Doomsday. My personal theory, based on the curtains shown in the footage, is that this new scene features Loki meeting up with Cap and Peggy. That is just my own guess about what kicks things off, not anything confirmed on stage.

Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds joke about joining the Doomsday cast

From there, the panel gave us Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds doing a bit about whether they could round out the Doomsday cast themselves. It was a cute, funny moment, and it seemed to be making the point that even though it has felt like everyone is in this movie, maybe not literally everyone is in it.

New Doomsday footage shows Sue Storm confronting Victor's past

The panel also gave us a look at new Doomsday footage, which has now been released publicly. Did it move the needle for me? A little bit. We see Sue Storm crying over who Victor used to be, how broken he has become, and how loss has changed him, and I think that loss ties back to his mother. In the comics, Victor Von Doom's mother sells her soul to the devil essentially to guarantee her son becomes a great man, and this footage includes a tapestry or carving style image of a mother and child that seems to gesture at that.

I am wondering if that maternal image connects to Doom going after supernatural or superpowered children, possibly building a parents and children theme, since Victor talks in the footage about how people have been living on borrowed time and are unworthy. We also get a bit more of his power on display as he fights Thor again.

Even with all of that, I am still on the fence a little. "I know that's not a popular opinion. I know so many people are very, very on board with Doomsday." I just need a bit more, and I think once I am in theaters and understand the reasoning behind Robert Downey Jr. being part of this, that will likely win me over. For now, the footage looked cool and was fun to see, but I still have my qualms.

Which of these Marvel reveals are you most excited about? For me it is Vision Quest, hands down. I cannot wait to reread that Tom King comic and see what direction this series takes.
