Titanfall 3 Is Not Announced, but Respawn Really Did Build It Once, and Here Is What a Sequel Must Get Right
Respawn spent months on a third game before pivoting to Apex Legends, a Titanfall universe project was reportedly cancelled in 2025, and a sequel would need pilots, Titans and a real campaign at its heart
There is no announced Titanfall 3, but Respawn really did work on one, and another game set in the Titanfall universe was reportedly cancelled just last year. So we are not waiting because nobody thought of making more Titanfall. We are waiting because every time the series gets a near comeback, something else wins.
At some point, waiting for Titanfall 3 became a joke. Somebody posts the number three in Titanfall font, the comments go wild, and for about 12 hours everybody convinces themselves Respawn is about to announce something. Then it turns out to be an Apex update, and we do it all again six months later. But here is the part that stopped being really funny: Respawn really did work on Titanfall 3.
I still want to offer some hope, because the relationship between fans and publishers is shifting. If you look at what happened with Halo, and what is happening with Destiny, fans are getting loud enough that they are actually starting to make a difference. So I want to look at why this keeps happening, whether Titanfall 3 still makes sense in 2026, and the one thing a sequel would have to get right before I would ever trust it.
There is no Titanfall 3 announcement, but a former Respawn developer says the team spent about 10 months on one
First, the actual status. There is no announced Titanfall 3. There is no trailer, no release date and no official confirmation that a third game is being made right now. So if you see something claiming Titanfall 3 is confirmed because somebody found a mysterious number in an Apex post, you know the drill.
What makes this story interesting, and frustrating, is that the sequel was real, and it may still be real. Former Respawn developer Mohammad Alavi said the team spent about 10 months working on Titanfall 3 after Titanfall 2. They had already begun building it and developing the story, but the team ultimately pivoted toward the battle royale that became Apex Legends.
Before anyone turns that into a story about EA executives walking in and killing Titanfall, Alavi described it as a decision the developers themselves made, which is crazy to me. They believed the new idea had more potential than making Titanfall 2 with some improvements.
I understand the Apex Legends pivot, and I still hate what it meant for players like us
I understand the decision, and I still hate what it meant for players like you and me. Apex became a massive game, and Respawn made the right call for that project. But imagine finishing the Titanfall 2 campaign, getting invested in Jack Cooper and BT, and then learning that the sequel was replaced by a game where you could visit the same universe but could not continue their story.
I am a Titanfall fan all the way back to the original. I was actually flown out to Respawn for an early capture of the first Titanfall. It was a crazy experience, especially the first time I got in a Titan or when a Titan dropped. It was wild.
Then I watched what happened, and Titanfall got the short end of the stick over and over. You cannot launch a game between Battlefield and Call of Duty at the height of their juggernaut status and expect it to work. It had nothing to do with Titanfall itself; it never stood a chance. Titanfall 2 was the same. These are amazing games with some of the smoothest gameplay you could ever ask for. It was just wrong place, wrong time, repeatedly.
A game set in the Titanfall universe was reportedly cancelled in 2025
This is not ancient history. In 2025, Respawn announced it was stepping away from two early stage projects, and reporting identified one of the cancelled projects as a game set in the Titanfall universe. It was not confirmed to be Titanfall 3, and I do not want to pretend it was. But what was it? Another possible way back into that world? It ended during the layoffs at Respawn, and I still want to know what it was.
That gives a clear picture of where the franchise stands right now. The universe is not forgotten; how could you forget it? Apex Legends lives in it. But a proper new Titanfall game has yet to make it through all the decisions required to actually release one.
Titanfall 2 launched between Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty Infinite Warfare
I think part of the problem goes back to how Titanfall 2 was treated. That game came out on October 28, 2016, one week after Battlefield 1 and one week before Call of Duty Infinite Warfare. If you were trying to find a worse place to release a new shooter, you would have to put it inside another shooter's menu.
Some people will argue that Infinite Warfare was a flop and everybody hated it. But it was packaged with Modern Warfare Remastered, and you could not get Modern Warfare Remastered unless you got Infinite Warfare, so it sold well. Battlefield 1 competed head to head as well. Titanfall 2 landed in the middle of that and it got swallowed up.
I am not going to say the release window explains everything. Maybe even with a perfect date, Titanfall 2 would not have become the biggest shooter in the world. But when people talk about that game as if the audience rejected it, I have a really hard time ignoring that it had to fight Battlefield and Call of Duty at the exact same time. EA published two of those games. As I put it: "Somebody looked at that calendar and said, 'Yeah, this seems okay. We're good. Thumbs up. Green light. Ship it. Go gold.'" That is insane to me.
Titanfall 2 delivered on both multiplayer movement and its campaign
If you have ever played Titanfall 2's multiplayer, you know how silky smooth and fun it was. The shame is that it did not just deliver on that; it delivered on both sides. The multiplayer had a rhythm other shooters struggled to copy. Wall run, slide, build speed, pick a fight you probably should not pick, somehow escape, and then hear your Titan drop behind you.
In most shooters, a map is something you move through. In Titanfall, the map is something you actually use. A wall was not cover; it was a route.
Then the campaign proved the series could do more than movement clips. It understood that switching between a pilot and a giant machine could change the scale and the emotion of every scene. It gave us Effect and Cause, a level with a time shifting idea so good that people are still bringing it up 10 years later. Respawn itself had pointed to that mission as an example of the experimental design process behind the campaign.
Titanfall 3 must be built around pilots and Titans, not an extraction shooter
That is why I do not want Titanfall 3 to be a name slapped on whatever shooter happens to be fashionable when it is green lit. Do not bring the series back as an extraction shooter. Please, do not. I do not care if somebody has a spreadsheet saying extraction is where things need to go. And do not tell me it is a full sequel if the Titans are limited time events or a power up I get once every three matches.
The central idea is right in front of everyone: pilots and Titans, two different ways of feeling powerful. The magic happens when the game moves between them. As a pilot, you are fast, vulnerable and always looking for another route. Inside the Titan, you own the space with that heavy step, and suddenly everyone who was chasing you has a different problem.
A real campaign, a fair multiplayer ramp and a better release date
I also want a real campaign, a continuation. I do not want a three hour introduction to the multiplayer store. I want a full story with levels built around distinct ideas, just like Titanfall 2 did. And yes, I would like to see what happened with Cooper, because the ending gave people a reason to keep asking about him. But if the story goes somewhere new, I am fine with that too.
Multiplayer needs just as much care. Bring back the movement skill ceiling and let experienced players do ridiculous things, but give new players a way to learn without spending their first 10 matches getting deleted by somebody traveling at highway speed. I am not saying skill based matchmaking; give them some beginner stops, somewhere new players can go to learn. And for the love of God, choose a release date that gives the game some air to breathe.
Apex Legends makes the business case for Titanfall 3 complicated
There is a business question here too. Apex is still a game Respawn supports. From EA's perspective, asking a studio to build another multiplayer shooter in the same universe raises questions about staffing, money and whether the two games would have to compete for players. I do not have EA's internal numbers. Maybe the case for Titanfall 3 is harder to make than it looks. I do not know.
But I think that is exactly why a sequel would need a clear identity. Apex is its own thing, though it has been around for a while, and I wonder whether it has started to run its course. Titanfall should be a premium campaign and a multiplayer game built around pilots and Titans. I would think the two can share the universe without trying to serve the same player in the same way.
I do not think Titanfall 3 is coming soon, but it should happen
Do I think Titanfall 3 is coming soon? No. There is nothing publicly announced and no reason to expect it. After multiple cancelled projects connected to the universe, I am done treating every hint as a secret reveal.
Do I think it should happen? Absolutely. But after 10 years, I would rather they take the time to make a sequel with a real campaign.
If Respawn announced Titanfall 3 tomorrow, what is the one thing you would need to see before you believed they got it right?
